  • This is seemingly a beautiful safe, and worked great for the first 2 ...
This is strong and easy to use safe. The opening and closing are so smooth that sometimes I open and close it just to enjoy it. The battery case location facilitates easy replacement of the 4 AA batteries when necessary. The capacity is not that large due to the thick fire resistant walls (appx. 9" wide x 12" deep x 15 1/2" high usable), however it works very nicely as designed if that's the storage capacity you need. The removable shelf is helpful as we use it to vertically laptops that won't lay flat on the bottom. Be sure to also purchase or get a moisture absorption kit to avoid musty/moldy storage over time. While it is heavy and awkward for one person to lift at 125-135 pounds, don't let that fool you into thinking that a thief could not carry it away if not secured to the floor or other infrastructure. Two men can carry a 150 lb. human in distress, and similarly pretty easily carry out a 135 pound safe with your valuables if not attached. One man could slide or lift it on a small dolly and easily roll it away. There is a predrilled hole in the bottom of the unit that enables attachment to the floor using a bolt. My wife and I decided to mount the safe it up higher as she goes in and out for jewelry often, and didn't want to bend down to the floor each time. Since there are no predrilled holes in the back of the unit, it took me a few hours to build an structure around the safe that would enable it to rest securely on a platform, and to place mounted brackets into the wall studs that grasp the safe from the top. This facilitates embedding the safe below a closet shelf or other structure that will make it challenging to rip out (not impossible, but much more difficult to access/remove with a crowbar or other strong wedge device). Holes in the back that would have enabled using lag bolts into the wall studs would have made an eye level mounting much easier, and a "5 star safe" ... show more

  • Safe box is secure, but locking mechanism seems tenuous at best
I received this safe a couple days ago and am more or less happy with it, though I was surprised by the simple and short-sighted locking mechanism. My purposes are primarily to have a single place to keep important documents so I don't loose them in a filing box somewhere, and to have a storage place to keep items of sentimental value out of the reach of children. I'm fortunate this safe will work well for my needs, but would have been disappointed if I were planning on storing items that need actual secure storage. I'm confident this safe will keep items out of the hands of an 8 year old, but not confident it would prevent a 14 year old from getting inside. The internal locking mechanism consists of a simple solenoid. The solenoid piston/plunger is held in an upward position by a small spring, and while in the upward position it blocks the dial on the outside of the safe from being rotated to release the door. When a correct code is entered into the keypad on the outside of the safe, the solenoid activates and the solenoid piston is pulled into a downward position for a few seconds, allowing the safe dial to be turned and the door to open. After a few seconds the solenoid piston is release and the spring returns it to an upward position. What, to me, seems to be insecure is the weight of the piston as compared to the strength of the spring that holds it in the upward position. If I depress the solenoid piston with my finger and allow it to spring back up on it's own, there is a lot of bounce effect which allows the piston to oscillate up and down for a few seconds. That indicates that the strength of the spring is low compared to the weight of the piston, and that this safe could likely be opened pretty easily by raising the safe just a few inches, and then dropping it back down to a hard surface while turning the opening dial at the same time. It would not take very much momentum of the solenoid piston to over power the strength of the spring, allowing the safe door to open. I would say this safe is great for storing your passport, car title, or your grandpas old pocket knife that you don't want to get ruined. The protection from fire damage is helpful for knowing important documents will likely make it through a fire. But, if you're looking to secure something of real value/importance like gold or firearms, I would recommend you pass by this safe and find something a more secure. This safe could have been significantly better if they had used a 25 cent spring instead of a 10 cent one. A stronger spring may have required them to upgrade from a $10 solenoid to a $15 solenoid, and might take 6 AA batteries to operate instead of 4, but for just a few dollars in production cost, this safe could have been much more effective. ... show more

  • Small Safe purchased for fire security
Safe purchased for 2-hour fire protection. Well-made feels solid. Weighs only about 135lbs so bolt it down to prevent it from being carried away. The safe was packaged very well. Outer box showed wear and tear you would expect from heavy objects being shipped but there was Styrofoam between the outer and inner box to absorb any impact and again another layer of Styrofoam between the inner box and the safe. Roomy enough to store irreplaceable documents yet does not take up too much room in your house. ... show more

  • Don't skimp on your safe!
Delivered very quickly to front of garage, Very heavy so needed some help to get it out of the box and into location. No dents, packed very well and works well from the first time. Went with the electronic because it is easier to open. Safe was a replacement for a Sentry safe that was broken into when our home was burglarized. All steel compared to plastic combo in the Sentry, It probably only took a minute to pry the old one open. i bolted it to beams under the floor with the one center hole that is at the bottom using good sized lag bolt. It is also in a closet which will make getting a pry bar in for leverage nearly impossible. I feel the Steelwater is very secure and close in comparison to other high end safes costing double. Higher fire proof rating is a plus. I learned the hard way to spend a little more for much better quality when it comes to a safe. ... show more

  • Very satisfied ….
I was specifically looking for a safe to fit in a specific space. This was the only one I could find and it fits perfectly. Furthermore, I couldn’t be any happier with the quality and construction. It looks and feels well-made. The instructions were easily readable.
