If you look close the product has a sheen that can be seen which makes you realize it's plastic... I think this is effective only on a case by case basis. If you try to put this out by itself I think it's obviously a fake. Try to put it on a bookshelf instead with other books. HOpefully, that have bright colors like this one. The lock is a bit flimsy, but again I feel like someone finding this book is going to be the end of your disguise of whatever you're trying to hide... It will be easily cracked into if identified for what it really is. ... show more

Most of these secret books are dictionaries, a foolish strategy in my opinion because a dictionary is commonly used. A cookbook is a brilliant cover, with a stylish and appropriate design, and a topic that is normal but not very interesting. It's even better since I actually cook. I love it, it's a good update to the typical book-safe. I doubt it's very secure, especially because it can be snatched as it's not heavy and very portable. But...It's not supposed to be heavy and impenetrable; it's supposed to blend it naturally - as it certainly does. A recommended buy at a good price. I bought this "cooking with vegetables" hide-a-safe for all my college age girls. It's important to a safe and secure place to put your valuables in a dorm and this provides it. This was a Christmas present, Kris Kringle style. It's large and holds a lot inside, more so than other diversion safes of this kind. The print on the spine and face of the book safe is NOT AS SHOWN: it's much fainter. Much. Great that it comes with keys, however. The way to make this work is to line it up with other books and then put a book horizontally ON TOP of it! It's a dead giveaway otherwise and even the dimmest pilferer can see the obvious and defeat all your crafty thought, planning and squirelling away of valuables. As a gift, it was nice as it came in a cardboard box that made wrapping easy, even for a born gift-bag gifter like myself. ... show more

If you opened the cabinet I have this in you would spot it immediately. It has a shiny metallic finish. This book safe should have had a cloth covering instead of a painted surface. Now I need to find a way to dirty it up so it won't be so attracting. As far as the safe part goes, I did like the way it was made and done. Update.. I just realized that my book safe here has no text on the spine. Also the text in the yellow box on the front is missing. Any suggestions? Not bad. Like many others posted, the writing on the side of the book is not black as it is in the pictures. I don't care much about that, but there was a small split on the spine already when it was delivered. This is a gift for my mother and while she surely won't really mind, it would have been nice to not have to give a gift that came damaged. That was very disappointing. ... show more
