  • Great, easy to install gas valve - Remote on/off and H/M/L functions perfectly. Much better than manual valve.
Our manual gas valve was failing so we upgraded it with this remote controlled one. The install to our existing gas fireplace was quite easy and straight forward. I did have to purchase a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter at the hardware store (for $3) because our burner pan has a 1/2" fitting. One snag was that the fire would shut off after about 10 minutes. I did some basic troubleshooting and realized that while the pilot worked fine, as soon as the fire started it was pushing the blue pilot flame away from the thermocouple. The cooler yellow flame of the fire was causing the thermocouple to "cool down" enough to cut off the gas. I bent the pilot a little closer to make sure it's always hitting the thermocouple and now it works perfectly. The remote function is awesome and our high/med/low settings work perfectly. The differences between high, medium, and low are obvious and we usually just keep it on medium. Not that we use the manual knob very much, but it would be nice if it were indexed better to let you know which way to turn it. Several times I lit the pilot and promptly spun the knob to "off" because it's not clear which way to turn it. (knob is off-pilot-on) We'll be using the remote most of the time, so that's not a huge deal. Might get a white marker and draw an arrow on there myself. ... show more

  • Pretty good
This was a breeze to install (if you know what you’re doing), it took me about 30 minutes and I wasn’t trying real hard. Probably not for your average weekend warriors, you’re better off hiring someone so you don’t blow up your house. Pilot stays lit, I had tried another brand and the pilot kept going out when you turned it off. On/off works great from anywhere in 25x25 room. Four stars because I have the same problem with the H,M,L, it doesn’t do much. I’m going to buy another for my second fireplace and just get the one with on/off button. ... show more

  • Easy to install with some prior knowledge - directions are rather poor for a beginner
This kit was very easy to install. The pilot was set way too high initially but it is easily adjusted by turning the screw underneath the knob (remove cover) in the front. You want the pilot as small as possible without blowing out or not heating the thermopile. The other reviewer that said the pilot is loud needs to turn it down. I see this alot and in the fireplace I installed this kit on but flare fittings do not need pipe dope etc, it should not be put on a flare fittings!. The instructions are shockingly lacking if you have never tried something like this. For example, no where does it show how to adjust the pilot flame or how to install damper safety clip. The flame modulation was noticeable but not as dramatic as I would like - but ok. All said, works great so far and a breeze to install. Be careful when bending the pilot light tubing so not to crimp it, there's no fixing that if you do other than replacing the pipe. I can't speak on longevity but so far I'm pleased! ... show more

  • Good company, reliable product
Straightforward assembly. Unit works well with simple remote. Remembers prior settings when turned off. Plastic housing seems susceptible to heat from fire. I called company with a question and they were prompt and helpful.

  • Works easy set up
Had to buy one fitting, but install was easy. I don’t know about the different high lows settings, but pleased with outcome.

  • Save yourself time, money and grief: Don't buy this valve kit!
Not recommended at all!. I replaced a manual control valve for vented propane logs with this kit. It was a complete pain to install, and I don't get the functionality out of it that I feel I paid for (namely, the H/M/L control - it's just one flame level). See complete review below. I bought this for my wife for Christmas to replace a manual valve on our propane log set (18", I think something roughly like 35-40,000 BTU; this becomes relevant later in the review). First issue: any of these that you find online are inevitably for natural gas, not propane. So I had to look online and find the manufacturer's website ([...]). They don't list a way to buy the propane conversion kit that's discussed in the (very incomplete) product documentation that's included with the valve (the documentation is downloadable from the website). The basic accessories that are necessary for the conversion are a pilot with the correct orifice and a mixing valve (also with the correct orifice). The pilot/thermocouple set that comes with the value are a standard Honeywell universal replacement, so I did a lot of research and found out that you apparently needed an 0.012 orifice for the propane pilot and the included 0.018 orifice is for natural gas. Well, I figured I'd just use the old pilot/thermocouple from my old manual valve and log set and just install the new remote valve. But that kinda leaked by the time I replumbed the new valve in. Don't know about your setup, but the way this valve is made, the inlet and the outlet of the valve are on opposite sides as the valve that was with the logs. I didn't want to use the (shiny and kinda flimsy-looking) flexible hookup tubing that came with the valve; I wanted it plumbed in black iron, like the previous one was. But with the inlet and outlet reversed, that was going to be very difficult. Finally, building something out of 3/8" black pipe created a setup that looked pretty rediculous. As I looked at the valve more and more, I determined that the valve is actually installed in the cover/heat shield upside down - the printing of "off/pilot/on" on the valve is upside down if the valve is installed as shipped. Also, with the rigid piping, you have to take into account that the plane of the valve's inlet and outlet are not in the same plane as the burner (the existing valve was in the same plane as the installed burner pan). If you use the valve as supplied, I suppose I could have routed the flexible tubing outlet over the inlet and it would have flexed to allow it to sit at a different height/in a different plane as the valve. However, I ended up just removing the heat shield/cover and flipping the valve to it's designed orientation. That way, the pilot outlet is on top, not on the bottom and so the valve sat perfectly in the plane of the burner, and the inlet was again on the same side as the existing valve, allowing a very simply nipple-to-elbow-to-nipple connection from valve to my old air mixer/orifice. But now I had to drill new holes in the cover/heat shield and get some new spacers and machine screws to attach that to the valve. So the design and configuration of this thing is pretty goofy, and makes the setup unnecessarily complicated. Now things were installed, but it was clear that something was wrong. The pilot was really putting out the gas, even with the 0.012 orifice in there. So I figured I'd just use the pilot adjustment screw to turn it down. After adjusting it several turns, it improved, but still was putting out a lot of gas, and kind of roared when it ran (yes, the pilot!). So I figured I'd just go back to the old pilot that had a kinda leaky inlet nut. I had some copper anti-seize around, so I put that on the nut and cinched it down, and it tightened up nicely. I reinstalled everything, turned the pilot adjustment screw on the valve back to the factory setting, and the pilot lit right up, and ran nicely just like with the old manual valve. So now I fired up the burner. Wow, the propane was really coming out, and the flames were about 2" high! So I hit the "H/M/L" adjustment button on the remote and nothing changed. Obviously, I couldn't use the set like this, with the flames FAR too high and no adjustability (can't manually tune the flame height on the valve). So I called the number Skytech has on their website. Their customer service people are pretty nice, and one of the two people I spoke with in a couple of calls was actually knowledgable. I explained everything to him, and he dropped a new air mixer for propane in the mail for no charge! When I received the new air mixer/orifice, I noticed it was smaller than what was on my existing log set. It was also a maleXmale 3/8" IPS part; the one that existed on my burner pan was a femaleXfemale 3/8X1/2" part, which necessitated another run for an black iron adapter at Lowe's. I got everything reinstalled AGAIN and cranked it up. Success! The pilot was still fine and the new mixer/orifice looked like it was producing a reasonable flame height and propane output to the burner (and there was even a little blue in the flame, so it is running at a better air/propane ratio than even the setup I had before). However, I'm still completely unsatisfied with this valve kit, and not because of the pain-in-the-butt installation and poor design configuration. The worst part is that there is STILL NO ADJUSTABILITY! There is no high/medium/low - at any setting, the flame height is exactly the same. So I call Skytech again and ask about this. They stated that with a smaller burner, like my 18" burner, there isn't any difference, and you won't see any unless you get to much higher burner outputs. Well, how the heck am I supposed to know that? I chose the valve because it had a high, medium, and low setting, and paid extra because I wanted (and needed) adjustability. This thing is a LOT more expensive than the simple on/off remotes, and has additional mechanical complexity (like a stepper motor) to potentially fail or wear out. Fortunately, the flame is at a usable height now, but I think that's a lucky coincidence, because there's absolutely no adjustability now; the flame height is set by the propane pressure and the orifice size. The lady on the phone at Skytech admitted that they should do a better job at telling people in the sales literature that this won't give any variability unless you have very large log sets and burners, but didn't otherwise express any concern for my situation. She said the salespeople should tell potential customers, but obviously, if you buy online, you'll have no idea unless you'd have read this review! So I encountered a lot of grief with the installation, overpaid for an overly complex solution to just getting an on/off function, and am stuck with a nonadjustable valve with the mechanical complexity of an adjustable one. Oh, and speaking of overpaying - this valve is priced at nearly $300 here. It was a Christmas gift for my wife, so I guess I didn't shop this as hard as I should have, but in case you're still a masochist, if you look around for this valve (the exact same kit appears to be sold under differnet names by, for instance, Home Depot, where it's branded "Emberglow"), you can find it as cheap as $150: [...] ... show more

  • Easy to install
Great product. It converted my manual key to turn on fireplace to remote operated. One thing to pay attention to is the pilot. You can adjust the flame so that you are not burning a lot of gas but when the fireplace turns on, the pilot flame is smaller so sometimes it turns off the fireplace because it doesn’t detect the flame. So adjust as needed or place the pilot over the burner so there is a constant flame detected. ... show more

  • Not worth the extra $$
I spent more to be able to adjust the flames from lo, Medium & high, it really doesn't work, if you intently watch the flames you might notice a SLIGHT, slight change from low to high. Other than that it's fine.
