  • Useless- I've several of different models- this one is lame
Color: 5 Blades
This is the 5'th thermoelectric fan I've purchased. I have several running on one heater and bought one for a friend as well. This is the only one that will not function at all. Not even a little bit. I will try to return it, but that is a pain. It's winter and I'm far from an easily accessible postal service. Until the vender contacts me or sends a replacement this one star review is more than this junk deserves. Buy a different brand! Some of them work great! ... show more

  • Stay realistic
Color: 5 Blades
This product does work, but it is not going to move heat like a blower or an electric fan. What it will do is create more air movement than you would get from natural air flow and the wood stove (or pipe) radiating heat alone. The effect should be that the area warms a little faster and you get better heat distribution in the room. You are not going to feel the heat blowing. This attached with a large hose clamp. I opened the loop to install it, but if you can pull the pipe and just slide it over, much less effort tightening the clamp. This unit has plates and fins that are thinner than a similar fan I own. The difference that I notice is this fan begins spinning almost immediately, while the other one takes more time. I can't quantify the difference because some of it is because the pipe heats faster than the top of the wood stove. Once they are both going, this one maintains fewer RPMs. (i.e. the fan spins visibly slower) I am going with 3 stars because of the slower speed, and the inability to take it away from the heat source if necessary. (Above 640F, the components could be damaged and the fan will no longer work.) It does have a lift handle and it looks like it could be used as a free standing unit, but the blades would need to hang off the edge. (I did not test it and the instructions state it is intended to be attached to a pipe and not used free standing.) ... show more

  • Good concept but not enough ooomph
Color: 5 Blades
The media could not be loaded. When I started using my wood stove, I put a small fan on the floor behind the stove to blow heat out into the room when the woodstove got hot enough. After awhile I realized that a lot of heat was going up the stovepipe before the body of the wood stove heated up. So, to capture that instant heat, I put a fan behind the stack and had hot air blowing into the room much quicker. When I saw this heat powered fan on Amazon, I had to try it. This fan straps to the smoke stack on the front. The problem starts there, because it is trying to pull the warm air off the stack, instead of pushing it from behind, where the blade could capture much more hot air. Secondly, the fan, although 6 blades, barely moves the air. I also have one of these heat powered fans that sits on top of the wood stove with only 4 ( but larger ) blades, and it moves the air much better. Also, since the fan is mounted by the strap, there's no way to turn it while the stove is hot, so it can only point in that one direction. I give it 3 stars, but I would save my money on this one. The concept is good, but the execution, not so much. Not recommended. ... show more

  • Works! But don't expect massive airflow
Color: 5 Blades
Yes, this heat powered fan DOES work when properly placed on the stack of your woodstove. You have to remember that it doesn't have AC power... it's literally powered by the temperature differential between the ambient air your woodstove stack. This means you'll likely not have a rush of hot air coming from the fan. The output is dependent upon the temperature differential. The hotter the stack, the better the output. it certainly seems to help move hot air away from the stack and into the surrounding room.. but you'll not feel air hitting you from 6 or more feet away. Given the lack of any power supply, I think this is a great idea that does work to help heat a small room or cabin. ... show more

  • Won’t survive the heat
Color: 5 Blades
I have a similar version that sits on top of the stove and its performance is pretty negligible. The blades spin but there’s almost no movement of air. Unable to completely abandon the idea I had to try again. Maybe being attached to the chimney pipe will be more effective? Order placed, package arrived… Attempt number two begins with the same bent blades and subsequent wobble as the first fan but it’s probably not any big deal. This fan uses a large clamping band to attach it to the chimney pipe. It’s at this time I realize that this won’t work at all on single wall stove/chimney pipe which is where I expected to use this because the temperature would far exceed the safe range of the fan. The fan would be used in conjunction with an outfitter style wood stove inside a canvas wall tent; not in a typical residential setting. The maximum temperature it can safely operate is a bit over 600°F. If I was using double or triple wall pipe, it’s possible that temperatures would be low enough to not damage the electronics but heat rising off of the stove would be another concern and temperatures can easily be much higher than what the fan is capable of surviving. In most cases where a wood stove is free standing and has proper clearance, single wall pipe is used coming out of the wood stove until it passes through a wall, roof, or has clearance issues, then triple wall or a masonry chimney or liner is used. Why this matters is most situations people would buy this fan and intend to use it would be with single wall pipe. In my opinion the best case scenario is you burn up the fan and you’re only out a few bucks. Worse case…could be tragic. I’ll see if I can come up with somewhere else to deploy this fan other than where it’s supposed to go and I’ll update this review at that time. No matter what, if you intend to use any of the fans that operate on the Peltier Effect it’s critical to have a chimney thermometer, know your operating temperature, and pay close attention at all times. ... show more
