  • Best carpet cleaner purchased to date
Keeping up with two dogs can be hard at times. Knowing that one of the most used space in our household is a carpeted family room, were we spend most of our time including our four legged loved ones. Unfortunately our dogs do not shower daily, which allows them to bring in the outside inside. Though we wash our dogs every 2-4 weeks the dirt they apply to our carpet requires cleaning every two to three weeks. We do not care to pay the expense for carpet cleaning services that often, so I and my wife do it ourselves. This is our third carpet cleaner over the past 6 years and hopefully one that will last the long haul. So far so good, easy to use, and durable to say the least. This machine is built to last. Performance is much better than the Harry Homeowner machines we purchased in the past, believe me they were not cheap. In comparison to a carpet cleaning company, this machine should pay for itself within four months at the current rate of usage. Highly recommended this product to those who will clean their carpets as often as we do. Worth the money!!! ... show more

  • Does a fabulous job cleaning
Does a fabulous job. I've been using it on floors in addition to my rugs and it puts a lot of water out while you're holding the button on non-rugs but you can pull that water back up with the Rug Doctor and it leaves all my floors so clean. I think the thing I like most is the tanks are so large I can do a couple of rooms before I have to put in new water or clear the dirty water. Much nicer than smaller units I've used in the past where I was constantly emptying and putting in water. The only thing I would like to see improved is the bar that's used to hold down the return tank. That is very hard to close and open - I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with arthritis of the hands. At first I thought I'd get my hands pinched as I closed it but I never seem to have that problem - it's just hard to close open - you have to really pull. But once in place it stays in place. ... show more

  • A Lot of Machine for a lot of Money
Ok, so for those thinking about buying one of these, a couple things: This is a professional quality carpet cleaner designed for hard-constant use. It's big, heavy, and extremely durable/reliable. It's not that Hoover or Bissel they advertise on TV or in the magazines. However, professional carpet cleaners don't use these-they use the $25,000 truck-mounted extractors. So is this worth almost $900, or are you better off buying that Hoover or Bissel? I rented this exact machine (it was red-minus the attachments) to clean about 1800 sq. ft. of incredibly disgustingly soiled carpet in a rental house that had years of neglect, dirt, being peed and pooped on by various animals, hair, food, and stank to high heaven. Let's say it's work was cut out for it. It took two days, and still didn't come clean, but I will say I was impressed with the Rug Doctor. First, this is a big machine. Weighs over 50 lbs (empty), stands about 4 ft. tall, and is a genuine 13" wide. It has a 28 psi chemical/water injector pump, and a 12-amp 1.9 hp suction motor. The cleaner tank holds about 6 ounces of cleaner, and the two fresh and gray water tanks hold about 2.4 gallons (measured by my bucket) each. It's made mostly from very heavy-duty thick polyethylene on the outside and a steel chassis on the inside to hold all the mechanicals. I am sure there is stainless steel throughout the plumbing, moving parts, and fasteners. The gray water tank is made from the same high-density polyethylene, and it's about 1/8" thick and will be unlikely to ever break or crack. The filtration/suction system is very heavy duty and the filter is easy to clean (hard to remove, but easy to clean). The filter housing is held on by suction and a friction-fit retainer that slides over the housing. It's clear so you can see if you're pulling water out of the carpet or not. It has 6" easy-rolling wheels and the handle is adjustable in rake (like the steering wheel in your car) from about 80 degrees to 60 degrees, which is handy for this machine. The brush doesn't spin. It vibrates back and forth about 200 times a minute, which is odd, but works. I noticed it "groomed" the carpet as good as the brush roll machines. Only the gray water tank is removable, and removing it is a bit of a pain. To do it, you have to flip down the retainer (which is actually the handle to the gray water tank) that holds on the air/water separator. It's a very tight fit and requires both hands (my hands are big and strong, but I needed both) to pull it down. Once the retainer is down, you just lift off the filter assembly and remove the tank. Pretty simple! The clean water goes in the bottom tank built into the machine, and the detergent goes in a small reservoir that's behind the clear water tank. It only holds about 6 ounces though, and it has a mesh screen to keep foreign matter from getting into the injector pump. Nice touch. There's a selector for switching between floor cleaning and using the accessories. Operation is super-simple. There's no adjustments anywhere besides the handle, and only a button to activate the brush and the detergent/water injector. There is a waste transfer hose from the vacuum outlet that goes to the filter, and the hose pulls out so you can attach the wand. Aside from that, all you do is fill the bottom tank with hot water, fill the detergent tank with your favorite cleaner (any carpet-cleaner detergent works), replace the gray water tank, put the filter housing on the gray water inlet, and slide the retainer over the housing. That's it! Turn on the machine, press the handle-mounted button, and away you go. The machine isn't very noisy at all for a powerful cleaner. It wasn't quiet, but manageable. I could barely hear it running from down the hall. The suction is pretty powerful, and the brush didn't slow down for anything, even when I ran it on shag carpet and some deep-pile shag carpet. It was satisfying to see the years of filfth and dirt and hair being passed through the air/water separator. The downside is you can png push this machine. The front drags on the carpet for a good seal, so you can't push it. So when you get to the end of the room, you have to either turn around, or go backwards. The water doesn't last too long. I got about 15 minutes of use out of that 2.4 gallons before it was time to empty it. Emptying is easy, but unlatching the filter assembly is difficult, and thankfully the tank has a handle for carrying. How does it clean? It does a good job-nothing spectacular though. I give it a lot of credit because it helped clean the carpets some. Certainly not what a professional with a truck-mounted extractor and commercial cleaning detergents could do, but darn close. Some complaints. I wished there was an adjustment for detergent flow, and you could push it forward and not just pull it. Using this machine for long periods can be tiring with all the emptying and pulling. I didn't have the wand and tools, so I can't comment on that, but I'm sure they're really high quality. Also, it did clog on it once after running over some deep-pile shag, the lower hose got a nice clog of hair, lint, and carpet fibers. That's all the faults I can find. Pros: Professional-grade machine High quality Nearly indestructible Quiet operation Easy to use Powerful, industrial motor Wide cleaning path Excellent at removing years of dirt 2.4 gallon gray and clear water tanks Low-maintenance Cons: Expensive Heavy Removing the gray water tank is difficult Cumbersome to move around So, you've got $900 to burn on a carpet cleaning tool. Do you buy this or the cheaper Rug Doctor Mighty Pro, or the Bissel Big Green? Do you like deep-cleaning your entire home's heavily-soiled carpets on a regular basis? Do you want to buy the last carpet cleaner you'll ever own? Do you want to clean people's carpets on the side for extra money? Are you tired of paying the carpet cleaning pros? Are you willing to pay for all this Blue/Red awesomeness? If you want the absolute best that will outlive you, then get the Wide Track. It will be hard to beat it for longevity, but the other machines probably do just as good with cleaning for 1/3 the price. Great machine though. ... show more

  • RUG DOCTOR RULES
A very good machine that is worth the money. It does a very good cleaning job on carpets. Maybe that's why you see it for rent all over the place. Didn't think my carpets were that dirty, but when I finished just one room, the water in the container was very dark, almost black with dirt I cleaned from the carpet. Best purchase I made in a while. ... show more

  • Total lack of customer service from Rug Doctor...
...makes our Customer's SteamVac more useful as a boat anchor! We're a vac service shop and have been trying for months and months to get a pump so we can fix a machine brought to us for repair. We've called and emailed as has the guy who owns it and NOTHING! No response at all to any messages left or emails sent. Terrible way to treat a guy who bought TWO Rug Doctors. Can't recommend them simply on the lack of support from the manufacturer when there is a need for parts. ... show more

TO BE HONEST........ I HAVEN'T TRIED IT YET. BUT, I HAVE RENTED THEM IN THE PAST AND WAS SATISFIED WITH THE FINAL OUTCOME. MY CARPETS LOOKED AND SMELLED LIKE NEW AGAIN. I JUST THINK OVER ALL ITS A BETTER MADE PRODUCT THEN SOME OF THE CHEAPER BRANDS.
