I usually do not write reviews, but a product of such poor quality from a company that has a reputation for good quality needs to be called out on this one. Received the Rubbermaid Premier Series IV today and installed the lid as per the instructions written on the under side of the lid. The popping sound (actually two of them) referenced in the instructions are the two hinge pegs of the lid popping into their respective two holes of the base which secures the lid to the base. When I pushed the foot pedal to open the lid, the lid hinge pegs popped back out of the two holes meant to secure the lid to the base. I reinstalled the lid per the product instructions and pressed the foot pedal with the same outcome as the first attempt. Upon inspection, it is clear that there is too much space between the hinge pegs of the lid and the corresponding holes in the base. So the defective product will be boxed up and sent back. I have read other reviews today claiming that the product is made in China. I cannot confirm the location of manufacture from inspection of the product or packaging, but I can say that my experience is consistent with the reputation for low quality typical of many products manufactured in China. From my perspective, Rubbermaid's reputation has taken a serious blow with this product. ... show more

We've had this trash can for several months now. Cleanup is a breeze, and it looks much better than stainless steel cans that in my experience never look as good as the moment they come out of the box. The height and ninety degree corners allows for a complete filling of a 13 gallon bag. The hide away outer edge design means none of the garbage bag is visible and leads to much less mess on the top lip. Cons: - The sides and lid are a bit flimsy. I'd like to see thicker plastic, particularly in the sides, where a sturdy surface is often useful when knocking stubborn waste out of a container or the sink strainer. - The rear-mounted lid lock is cumbersome. But a workaround is to lift the outer rim, which locks, as if you're taking out a full bag. - I'd also like to see a recessed finger hold on the lid to make fingertip access easy. (One can however lift the lid with fingernails under the front edge.) ... show more

I have written a negative review about this item, but I want to correct it. I was in the middle of a move, stressed out and wasn't able to put it together right. After the move I had time to put it together correctly and I'm glad I did. It works great and it looks nice. I love that you just step on the peddle and it opens without having to use your hands. I'll definitely will buy it again ... show more

I was so upset about this trashcan, I liked everything about it but the lid would stay up and open unless you pushed it down by hand - I read the reviews to see if it was broken or had some ridiculous design flaw and found one that said you have to align some mechanism after you change the bag by holding the top closed and pressing the kick pedal at the same time. Now it works! Space saver, no fingerprints, etc. It's a little wide for some trash bags, but you can experiment. ... show more

I originally purchased just one of the Rubbermaid Series IV to replace a Simple Human trash can in the kitchen where the color had worn off the plastic lid lock. Also, the lid would not stay in the open position when a piece of trash was tossed in. However, I liked it enough to purchase a second one for an area where the trash can was visible and used a lot. The first Rubbermaid trash can came undamaged. The second one ordered later has a little area on the top edge of the lid that was worn off (damage). That damage was minor. Edited to add that I realized later the second trash can did not have the red lid lock piece either. I contacted Rubbermaid to get just that part, but they were unable to send it. I ended up returning the second can. I needed to lock the lid at times to keep kids/pets out and or keep it open for cleaning. Why I like the Rubbermaid brand better. • Appearance o Looks nicer. The Rubbermaid has a stainless steel and plastic finish. Hopefully, the color will not wear off. • Lid o Soft close feature. o Lid stays in the open or closed position. I did not find the latch difficult to operate. It is on the back of the can instead of on the lid. • Liner Concealer o The stainless-steel trim covers the trash can liner. I use Hefty Ultra Strong with triple layer technology 13-gallon liners. There is no plastic inner liner. I did put a weight at the bottom of the trash can. If the can falls over, it is possible the stainless-steel trim could become damaged. The instructions are on top of the lid engraved in plastic. I’d recommend Rubbermaid include a color paper card. People with low vision will have difficulty seeing this. Overall, this trash can has nice features and appearance for the price. I've had the first trash can for two months now. It is in my kitchen. Looks great, and that one works well :-) ... show more

    • Very Good with One Flaw

I like this garbage can a lot outside of one issue. It's very easy to clean, seems pretty indestructable as far as a dog or small child trying to get into it from the top, and changing bags out is easy (albeit with a little elbow grease). Also is super quiet when the lid goes down properly. Flaw we have found is that if you push the top open via the pedal all the way, the latch seems to go too far up causing the lid to not automatically go back down. Easy resolve is to just push it til you hear a click and then the lid will go down slowly as intended. Unsure if this is a feature, user error, or a mixture. ... show more

    • Breaks after 2 1/2 months. Rubbermaid wont honor warranty.

This was the absolute best trash can ever for 2 1/2 months. Then it stopped closing. We can get it to work here and there but most of the time it stays open unless you physically push it closed. I contacted Rubbermaid in regards to the warranty on the product. I got an email from them saying they received my issue etc and they would be contacting me shortly to resolve the issue. That was 6 weeks ago and I havent heard anything from them. If you just need a great trash can for 2 or 3 months, this is your dream come true. If you want one longer than that, from a company that will back the posted warranty..... do not get this trash can. Complete waste of money. ... show more
