Features

  • FATRAT includes selectable stock "RAT", or new MOSFET clipping circuits
  • FATRAT has a new "FAT" selection for a nice thick tone with the historical RAT bite
  • FATRAT also includes a socketed op-amp, which allows users to easily change between the stock OP07DP and other popular chips

Description

Building off the popularity and foundation of the original RAT Pedals, this new model is entirely built in the United States and features complete tonal flexibility through a choice of original or MOSFET clipping circuits. The MOSFET clipping section in the new pedal provides a subtle smoothing in the upper mids and a more amp-like tone throughout the range of the RAT, without loss of the basic feel of the classic pedal. The new FAT RAT Pedal also features a bass enhancement that increases the bass response, which is perfect for bassists and guitar players who tune down their instruments. The new pedal will now run on nine- to 18-volts of DC power, for users looking for the best headroom and audio fidelity. Lastly, the FAT RAT also includes a socketed op- amp, which allows users to easily change between the stock OP07DP and other popular chips.

  • It's a legendary pedal for a reason.
Great sound, with a variety of switches and knobs to tweak around to shape your tone. A bit big so you might have a harder time squeezing it into a board but it's worth making the room for, IMHO.

  • Best option to whiteface.
I own 4 whiteface rats and a WF reissue. Been using them since 83 as a full time musician. I only use rat pedals for soloing. I always wanted more headroom and perhaps more bass or "filter" as they call it. This solves the problem, as it will run from 9-18 volts. I use a 12 v supply on it, and do not need the "fat" switch as the headroom allows for lower frequencies. Natural compression, socketed IC (installed a well used LM308N), and LED (what the WF has been missing). This will be a classic. Its taller than the WF rat, so you may miss the switch on stage a couple of times before you get used to it. ... show more

  • buy in-store and check out fully before purchase
It's a popular item with guitarists, but if you order online you'll find it comes with no power cable or 9v battery. In my case I had to order the power cable separately and wait a few days, only to find the unit was defective and did not work. This is not my first pedal... Then I had to get in the car and drive the item to a UPS center since I had nothing else to do. ... show more

  • Distortion Pedal - Must have
Been buying distortion pedals and finally the search is over. Lows and highs are pronounced clearly. Added my existing tube screamer before distortion and I knew from my strum that this was it. The knobs were on factory preset of 12 o'clock position when I first tried it and it was already an awesome tone. Of course, I had to tweak it to my likings. Would recommend this FATRAT pedal to anyone. ... show more

  • A classic
You have a 303? Love distortion? This. Is. It. Hardfloor pedal of choice, albeit this one is a tad more fat. Nothing wrong with that.

  • Classic Distortion
Classic distortion tones. The Fat switch is definitely worth the price increase versus the regular RAT pedal

  • Pretty Good with Some Interesting Issues
This review concerns the FatRat pedal. First, I like the pedal. I have 6 guitars and 5 amps. Sounds pretty good through all of them though some better than others. My fav was through an Orange head into my homemade 1x12 with an Eminence Texas Heat speaker. Now for the picky stuff. “It’s built like a tank,” says lots of reviews. True. And it’s heavy as one. It won’t matter to me because I stopped gigging a couple of years ago and won’t have to lug it around. Otherwise, I’d be groaning to ProCo to forget nostalgia and put the guts in a smaller package and lighter package. I suspect you can drive nails with this box all day, then still play music all night. The first 20% of the distortion knob didn’t do much of anything. But then what I hit could pass for overdrive. Then distortion, then fuzzy distortion. All good. I own an arsenal of really good OD and distortion pedals. This one truly sounds different than any of the rest. And I will find use for it as I record in my studio. Again, I like what the pedal does. Lastly, how the devil do you Velcro it to a pedalboard? I’ve really got to check the insides to see if the screws that hold on the feet also secure the PC board. If so, I’m not sure how to make Velcro work. And even if you get the feet off without incident, there’s the screw that holds shut the battery door. Again, back the the tank analogy. The big screw could almost hold down a car battery. (Not really; but it is large.) And the screw head protrudes a good quarter inch meaning it will be in the way of a good Velcro job. Make sure you own some Allen (Hex) wrenches. That’s what it takes to remove the screw to access the battery compartment. Since I use a power adapter, won’t have to worry about that. But if you use batteries and gig, be sure to take a wrench along. I’m probably going to get a flathead screw substitute and toss the original one. Again, I like what the pedal does, but the package is somewhat problematic to me. I would add that I liked the sound at 18v better than at 9. ... show more
