Description

The SOLO is the newest member of the Pro Co family of stomp boxes. Although it is housed in the same indestructible and road worthy steel enclosure that has come to be a trademark of Pro Co stomp boxes, the SOLO marks a departure from the RAT series of pedals in more ways than just the new cosmetics. With its enormous range of tones, 3 way selectable "hot, melt, & burn" modes, and highly interactive "scoop" and "tone" controls, the SOLO just might be the most versatile pedal in your arsenal. Don't let the name fool you, the 100% analog SOLO is no one trick pony. It is equally at ease in both lead and rhythm capacities, and with a wide variety of amplifiers and guitars. Capable of going from vibey, chewy, warm low gain tones, to deliciously mean and crushing high gain tones, the Solo still remains remarkably true to the sound that matters most: The sound of you and your guitar. And speaking of staying true to the sound of your guitar, true-bypass switching ensures that when the pedal is off, there is no coloration of your sound. Even in its highest gain settings, the SOLO remains extremely tube-like, articulate and touch sensitive. Complex chords ring out with clarity, leads sustain with ease. Roll back your volume knob and it cleans up, just like a good tube amp would. The solo uses three pairs of carefully matched (or should we say, carefully mismatched) clipping diodes to produce asymmetrical clipping. The three pairs are accessible via the "hot, melt, burn" slider switch. This has the effect of making the SOLO clip very much like a tube amp going into natural power tube distortion. Pro Co Sound also makes several other highly regarded effects including the popular RAT2, Turbo RAT, You Dirty RAT, and Deuce tone. Each effect has its own unique tone structure.

  • Good Pedal/Poorly Designed
I bought this pedal as it was a 2-in-1 that I was looking for. I wanted to switch between heavy fuzz and crunch with one tap. This pedal does that well as the 2 switches are located very close together so you can tap them both at the same time. This nice feature is however it's down fall the compact design of the pedal leads to several problems. Firstly your foot can easily (and does often) move the 6 control knobs at the top messing up any setting you have dialed in. Obviously this caused a very confused guitarist and very annoyed sound man (is there any other type?) at my first gig using this pedal. I have decided to tackle this with a simple mod which I can't be bothered to explain here however needless to say it's low-fi at best. Another strange design problem associated with the compact design of the pedal is the battery. I had to remove the case that the battery fits into to fit the battery in the small space inside the pedal. Surely the good people at Deucetone had tested this, and if so what on earth were they thinking? I was thinking they're idiots. More oddness and confusion struck me when I finally realized that the makers have decided to go against almost every other pedal ever manufactured and swap the input and outputs on the pedal around making it a pain to get the pedal in line with all the others. Again, what on earth were they thinking. I liken it to some weird and rare soviet creation that someone has stumbled upon while treking or something. Such a strange pedal. Regardless of it's design quirks the pedal sounds exactly as you would hope it to sound. You can get a wide range of sounds out of the different settings from full-blown fuzz to crisp crunch. RAT's are ever present in rock music and it's no surprise given the quality of sounds you can drag out of this little box. I use it as my only source of distortion, crunch and fuzz when playing live and would probably buy it again. If I knew how to I would swap the in's and out's around though as it's just plane dumb at the moment. ... show more

  • Where's my free T-Shirt?
Style: DIRTY RAT
Basically the You Dirty Rat is a soft-clipping Rat 2. The germanium diodes soften up the tone and feel a tad. It does get pretty gritty still when you crank up the distortion. My only complaint is being disappointed by the 'Free T-Shirt' offer that came with the pedal. I mailed in the form but the shirt never came. That kind of makes the overall experience a let down as the shirt costs an Andrew Jackson on it's own and looks Rat cool. ... show more

  • Awesome Sound... Made in the USA!
Style: DIRTY RAT
This pedal sounds great and is extremely versatile. From mild distortion to full blown distorfuzz! It never sounds harsh, or phartty, or icepicky, etc. I love it through my Fender '65 Twin Reverb® Amplifier, Black tube amp; I love it through my ZT Lunchbox 200-watt 1x6.5 Guitar Combo Amplifier SS amp. If you are considering the Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal , just spend the extra ten or so bucks and get this one instead. I think this one sounds better (a subjective observation), but this one is made in the USA. It is very high quality. The enclosure seems a little bit dated, compared to the boutique pedals available today. But it feels like it will outlast every BOSS pedal there. If you plan to use a power supply, be warned that it takes a 9-Volt tip positive 1/8" mini plug (like a mono headphone plug) power supply, like the Pro Co RPS-1 RAT Battery Eliminator Power Supply , instead of the more common tip-negative coaxial plug (found on BOSS pedals, Boss PSA-120S Power Adapter , etc). But the maximum current draw is only 2 mA, so 9V battery should last a long time! Buy it... Rock it! ... show more

  • Super fantastic
I wonder how I got along all those years without this pedal. I absolutely LOVE IT. Will not play without it. Basically 2 pedals with 3 settings each all in one unit. Each pedal can be used alone, or use one to boost the other. Lots of great combinations, all of them sound good. Very solid construction & made in USA. Also, this is the only Pro Co Rat to offer the 'clean boost' which has become my favorite: I use it by itself and to boost other effects. Can go from clean boost, to kind of saucy to downright raunchy. Brightens up a strat (or any single coil) and makes a Gibson or anything with humbuckers sound however you want, only LOUDER & BETTER. Makes my newer, solid state amp (i.e. cheaper) sound like a boutique tube amp or vintage marshall. Can play around a bit with the settings and have the volume knob on your guitar control the amount of distortion you get. If you have a spot on your pedalboard and have never played around with a Pro Co Rat before, I would highly recommend this pedal. It will be the first and last you ever need! ... show more

  • You Dirty RAT = Things Are Better Now
Style: DIRTY RAT
I bought the You Dirty version of the RAT. It's too good. Unlike the original RAT, it has the standard 9-volt barrel power so I accidentally bought a converter I don't need, but I'm not even upset about that because this pedal is so good. I play bass and was always really bummed out because I couldn't find a distortion pedal that didn't make me sound like the world's worst lead guitar. With the You Dirty RAT I don't lose my bass tone and somehow I also get great fuzz. I can run a reverb pedal into it and the effects don't get eaten up or blurred into oblivion. I can have a distortion pedal on my board instead of just cranking the gain on my head. This is huge for me. I need to sit down. ... show more

  • Where have I been?
Almost all my distortion/overdrive needs are covered by the Deucetone. Light overdrive and/or heavy overdrive when cascaded. The clean RAT fattens up the tone great so with single coils it really makes a difference, I like the Dirty RAT on A and Vintage RAT on B for humbuckers for cascading and the Dirty on A and The Clean Rat for single coils. Great string separation, dynamic, cleans up great, works great with any pickup, plenty of output, though the leader there is the ZVex Box Of Rock. I can't believe I spent years looking for something to sound like my RAT or to push my RAT. Well, this does it. It is built in the USA and it's solid as a rock. Solid and heavy. ... show more
