The reviews for the graphics card line are overwhelmingly positive, highlighting significant performance improvements over older models, exceptional 4K gaming capabilities, and efficient cooling systems. Users report a substantial upgrade in gaming experience, citing high frame rates at 4K settings across a variety of games with manageable power consumption. The build quality of the cards is frequently lauded, though there are isolated comments on coil whine and compatibility concerns.

Pros

  • 🚀 Major performance leap over previous generations, especially noted when upgrading from older cards
  • 🎮 Exceptional 4K gaming capabilities, achieving high frame rates in demanding games
  • ❄️ Efficient cooling systems keep the card at optimal temperatures even under heavy load
  • 🔧 Good overclocking potential and customization options through software
  • ✨ High build quality with premium feel and aesthetic options like lighting customization

Cons

  • 🔊 Some models have noticeable coil whine, although it's not bothersome to all users
  • 💾 Compatibility issues, notably with G-sync monitors, urging buyers to confirm specifications before purchase
  • 🔌 Minor concerns about the physical durability of power connectors on some models

Should I Buy It?

If you're in the market for a powerful graphics card that excels in 4K gaming, offers efficient cooling, and comes with a premium build, this could be a great upgrade for you. While minor drawbacks like potential coil whine or the need to double-check compatibility with your current setup exist, the overwhelming performance gains and positive user experiences make it a compelling choice for gamers and enthusiasts alike.

  • Does it all!!!
Style: 7900 GRE Hellhound
RE: Powercolor Hellhound 7900 GRE My grandson and I built a new machine last December (2023), an AMD build centered around the 7800v3d CPU. When it came to the GPU, we used a 4070 from another machine waiting and hoping for better pricing on AMD cards, in particular the 7900 XT. When the 7900 GRE was announced we were all –in waiting for reviews and a fix on the overclocking. The GRE was exactly what we wanted, a stock card that beats the 4070 Super and overclocks to compete with the 7900 XT. We picked the Powercolor Hellhound because it checked all the boxes, price, size, weight, great thermals, quiet, large factory OC, glowing reviews and ability to overclock with meaningful results (uses Samsung memory rated 20Gbps). The first thing we did was launch each game, check for Nvidia options and turned them off, uninstalled the Nvidia drivers using DDU and shut down. After installing the Hellhound, we disconnected the network and booted up, installed the latest drivers (24.6.1) and launched Furmark 1 and ran the 1440p benchmarking and then did the same for Furmark 2. Furmark is one of several benchmarking tools for windows and linux (Furmark 2) which is used for troubleshooting GPU ‘s, also provides a quick benchmark for OpenGL and Vulcan (Furmark 2). The results were what we were looking for to show everything was ok; Furmark 1: GRE- 15445, 4070 –11926 (the GRE is 23% faster) Furmark 2: GRE-12378, 4070-9299 (the GRE is 25% faster). The most meaningful way to benchmark a GPU is in-game testing, without repeating an entire review for the Powercolor Hellhound 7900 GRE a brief recap follows: Relative Performance (25 games, all cards stock, no user OC): Hellhound vs 4070 (Hellhound is 17% faster) Hellhound vs 4070 Super (Hellhound is 5% faster) Hellhound vs 4070 Ti Super (Ti Super is 10% faster) Hellhound vs 7900 XT (7900 XT is 14% faster) The three games (no user OC) that I regularly play with this machine are Avatar FOP, Halo Infinite and Doom Eternal the Nvidia optimized settings were left unchanged and when launched for the first time with the GRE all AMD options were turned off except for Radeon Anti-Lag. The first thing I noticed; the image quality was significantly improved. I thought I left some option on, so I double checked. Halo Infinite and Doom Eternal saw the biggest change, I ‘ve been playing Doom Eternal since launch and I never thought it could look this good. Performance wise Avatar FOP (with FSR/FG set to Quality, this is the setting I used for the 4070) FPS improved 10+% with better lows, Halo Infinite no change with these settings in FPS but noticeably better image quality, Doom Eternal this was like a new game, unbelievable graphics and 12+% increase in FPS, the 4070 also used DLSS (balance), I just might play this again from the beginning. The Powercolor Hellhound 7900 GRE is an incredible card, the 7900 GRE was listed as the penultimate card for 2024 and I agree, but this card should be number 1. I highly recommend this card for anyone looking for an affordable gaming GPU that does it all. ... show more

  • Great 1440p GPU
Style: 7700 XT Hellhound
The launch price of $450+ was just way too much. This is a fantastic value if you can grab it on sale for under $370. This GPU stays cool under load and is very quiet. While on the longer side, it isn't heavy enough in my opinion for any GPU support bracket. This GPU sits between the RTX 4060Ti and RTX 4070 in terms of performance without ray tracing, leaning more towards the RTX 4070. I currently pair it with a Ryzen 5700X and the GPU has high utilization in most titles which is great. This GPU can even go a bit further with a X3D CPU or new Intel or AM5. Twelve Gigs of VRAM is great for 1080p and 1440p and the graphics drivers are solid with no crashes. It has AV1 encode/decode and a good feature set. While the feature set isn't as mature and refined as Nvidia, it gets the job done. FSR is still inferior to DLSS, but you'll be too busy enjoying your game to truly notice. Besides, this GPU has enough raw performance where you may not even need upscaling to begin with compared to a 4060Ti. Very pleased with the performance. ... show more

  • Excellent performance for an excellent price.
Style: 6650 XT Fighter
Bought this on a sale for $230, and upgrading from a 1660 super, I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. This card blew me out of the water! First off, the AMD software is excellent. You have a lot of control over the aspects of the card - you can customize what shows up on the overlay, you can create performance profiles for each game, you can adjust minimum and maximum power draw (including for each game), and even overclock! For the actual performance of the card, I've been thoroughly impressed. Modern triple A games can run at 1080 around medium-high settings at a solid 60 - Elden Ring, Remnant II, Returnal. You can run some of them at 1440p, even. Games from previous generations are no challenge - Dark Souls 3, Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age, Persona 5 Royal - games like that can all run at 1440P high at a smooth 60, and some less demanding games can run at 4K without issue! Emulation performance is great - most PS2 games I played ran at 4K 60fps without issue, select PS3 games can enjoy similar performance (although it's much more dependent on the CPU than the GPU) too. As far as temps go, it stays pretty cool. The only time I've ever really seen it go much above 70C is playing a modern triple A game at 1440P - otherwise, it likes to hover around 65-68C. Power draw is solid. It doesn't normally go above 70-80W unless, again, I'm playing a modern triple A game at 1440p, in which case it can go up to around 110W. It's not notably loud, but admittedly I don't sit close to my computer - it's next to my television in the living room. Overall, this is an excellent card, and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for a budget bang-for-your-buck card! ... show more
