  • Pit Boss 17" vs Blackstone 22" We have both.
We bought a 22" Blackstone griddle on the cart about 3 months ago so I believe we can give a good comparison to the 17" Pit Boss we just bought a week ago. We also own a Pit Boss Smoker/Grill that we have had about 18 months so we can speak to quality of the brand. The Pit Boss griddle is amazing for a little guy. It definitely has hot spots on the back of the surface but the front can easily cook eggs while making other items on the back portion. The drip pan spout needs a design change. The flat top doesn't taper into the drip pan and the griddle frame is an obstacle, so food clogs the hole easily. The drain hole is is too small to funnel debris effectively and difficult to clean. I believe we will assign a tooth brush for cleaning the spout corners. The Blackstone is better in comparison. The Pit Boss griddle seasoned more easily than the Blackstone did for first use. It took awhile for the Blackstone to gain a good cooking surface. We think the Pit Boss cooked great right out of the gate after first seasoning. Both griddles are wonderful to cook on and we aren't disappointed with either one for our purposes. When we bought the Blackstone we intended to use it at home and for camping. It is heavy and cumbersome to transport and is a chore to pack and unpack. We were looking at buying a smaller one for camping when we came across this Pit Boss for a much lower price. We decided to buy the 17" Pit Boss because we are very happy with our Pit Boss smoker/grill. Seemed reasonable to give the griddle a try. We are pleased with the weight, size and portability of the Pit Boss. It is definitely the right griddle for our trailer! While the cooking surface is hot, the underside on the table was only warm, even during the burn off on high temperature. Very suitable for a picnic table or maybe even a plastic camp table. Haven't tried plastic yet, so caution is recommended. We normally use the tailgate on our trailer for grilling with the hookup to the trailer's propane. No extra attachments needed for either griddle in this case. For convenience, buying the attachment to hook up a regular propane tank to the Pit Boss is a must. The Blackstone came with the attachments for both kinds of tanks, so no additional purchase necessary. All in all, both griddles are awesome. The drain spout would be the only downside to the Pit Boss, but necessity is the mother of invention so we will figure out a way to clean it given the design. The cooking surface on the Blackstone warped in the middle on the first use. Pit Boss did not. ... show more

  • Great flat top for sure, but have reasonable expectations.
Rating these types of products is very difficult. I have learned a lot since having it. This was the second shot at a flat top in the "economical" price range. Started with a single burner Blackstone from Walmart. $90.00 and disappointed for sure. To start, I think I may have gotten a rare bad one. The ignition button pretty much didn't work at all and it was missing parts, but the worse part was the cold spots on the grill. I took it back and bought the Pit Boss for roughly the same price hoping that the heat distribution was better. It is better..... but only a little. It is easier for sure with the two burners, but if you are expecting a universal even heat then you will have to spend a lot more money. That is the overall point of this review. I have yet to find a brand that has even heating at this price point. The good news is you learn to cook with it and ultimately know the hot spots. The PitBoss came pre-seasoned, that was nice, quality is really good. Solid construction and twist adjustable front legs. Came with a very nice cover. Grease trap is mediocre, blackstone's is better. I loved the little aluminum inserts that blackstone has for their traps. But as a whole, the PitBoss is definitely better. We take ours camping, not the easiest of things to tote around but worth it. I put mine on a little table on the patio and connected it to a 20lb propane bottle. Exact same connection as the Blackstone, in fact it is a Blackstone connector purchased at Walmart for the previous grill. Works great. Now the good news, after all the reviews I read, one thing stands out as the most true, I will never, and I mean NEVER go back to a bbq for burgers! Once you have a flat top burger you are ruined for life. Even my kids know the difference. I tried pulling a fast one on them the other day because it was just easier to cook the hotdogs and burgers on the grill. They immediately asked what was wrong with the burgers! It really is noticeable. A little pepper, salt, and garlic powder, smash them for 10 seconds right on the griddle, toast the buns and.....well just try it! I would buy this just to cook hamburgers, yummmm. ... show more

  • Love this thing!
I'm impressed on how quickly this thing heats up. One or two minutes and this thing was hotter than a stovetop. The heat was a little bit uneven though but I'm sure all portable propane griddles are. The hottest spot being the back right corner. If I let it heat up a bit slower next time it should be more evenly heated. The griddle itself isn't cast but probably cold rolled steel. It's heavy. Most of it's weight is in the griddle but that's not to say that the rest of it isn't built well. The base is sturdy and doesn't flex or raddle, most of the material connections are made with good rivets and nutzerts. The burners are good quality stainless steel and the removable fuel line is brass which can be hand tightened and loosened and stored on spring clips inside the base. I'll probably get an adapter to run this off bigger 25lb tanks because I can see myself using this griddle alot. The knobs are something that you would find on a regular gas grill. They turn smoothly and each has it's own igniter. Make sure you have a good scraper and spatula for this griddle. I'm a fan of commercial cooking utensils and use mercer hell's handle's on this and they work good. ... show more
