    • I love it, except…
This will be long… I converted my wood burning Malm Fire Drum to gas. I thought about this for a long time before pulling the trigger. I had a plumber bring gas to the stove and connect the logs. This was the best decision EVER! The unit looks fantastic, and it heats my large living room faster than wood; I am thrilled! Except… the pilot requires 4 hands (2 of which are not consistent available to me)… bummer!! The knob has very little play between the off and pilot mark on the dial. Once at the pilot mark, you need to push the knob in to open the valve. The play between pushing and not, is very subtle. In other words, the knob requires very good fine motor and proprioception skills. After a bit of experimenting, I found the sweet spot. Unfortunately, in my case, it takes about 5 minutes, of pushing the knob, to get the gas to the pilot (this may not be the case for you). During that time, I would inevitably loose the sweet spot and have to find it again… ughh! Buttt… it’s okay because this step just to gets the gas to the valve; I push the knob again to continue the process (while my finger starts hurting!). After about 5 minutes of this, you need to bring a flame (long lighter) to the pilot. The lighter requires squeezing the clicker to get a flame started, and holding it to keep it lit. This needs to done while continuing to push the knob in (with my now aching finger!). At this point, you will not only need crazy levels of fine motor coordination and proprioception, as well as grip strength and endurance, in both hands; you will also need bilateral arm coordination to get the flame to the pilot. After you achieve this, you will need to hold still, in this position, for what fees like forever, and wait for the pilot to stay lit! I achieved this feat once, but never again! In conclusion (of my fireplace log dissertation), go ahead and try to do this with 1 person, I but don’t be ashamed if you need to call in backup support!! ... show more
