  • So Far... it's working well enough to at least meet reasonable expectations
I'm not trying to come across as blasé in my opinions re: this electric steamer, but neither can I feign enthusiasm about it -- it just is what it is and it does what it claims its designed to do, nothing spectacular, and that's neither a diss nor a ringing endorsement. I've used it off and on over the past month and a half since having purchased it (having been significantly steered in this product's direction after contrasting the "negative" issues that were mentioned in other reviews of the various similar appliances offered by different manufacturers, and gaining the satisfaction that this particular one seemed as though it would raise the fewest of concerns with me of all of the steamers found in this more "economical" price range). Thus far, the extent of my usage has been to steam frozen crab legs and various arrays of fresh produce... including steaming leafy greens, and it does a fine enough job, but I was under the impression that steaming food would be equate to considerably faster cooking than boiling, which I've often not found to be the case, but there's the plus of not having so much of the "good stuff" leaching out in the steaming process as opposed to boiling water. If I were to share what are [to me personally] a list of gripes, or at least perceived 'shortcomings' of this unit, it would relate to the following: [1] - I do not like not having any sort of an audible "session complete" indicator -- again, I'll admit that I was wanting something a bit more "on-the-cheap," but even so I think it should have at the very least a little 'bell ding' at the timer dial's conclusion (which would be very helpful for those of us with short attention spans who have a burning need to engage in other activities away from the kitchen while long-cook food is being made); [2] - I'm not a fan of those plastic discs with the small series of punched-out holes across them ~ I'd have much more preferred discs that were more mesh/wire-like in design so that the steam produced would have the benefit of taking advantage of maximum volume without needing to "squeeze through" a few little tiny holes; [3] - I'm quite fearful that the clear plastic would likely prove very delicate and fragile, so I'm always playing it with a healthy bit of caution to ensure that I'll never have to find out in some unfortunate mishap just how weak and brittle they just may actually be; and [4] - a "water level" indicator of some sort would've been nice... but, again, buying "on-the-cheap," only so much could be reasonably expected, especially given its very basic design. As for some "positives": [1] - I keep expecting this thing to leave large pools of water on my counter tops, but impressively, despite its design and fit which immediately leaves you with that anticipated gut expectation, all of the condensation that is produced inside (excepting what which escapes through the lid vents) remains inside; and [2] the ease of cleaning cannot be overstated. As I'm writing this review, this EXACT SAME UNIT is being featured as being branded by "OVENTE" as Amazon Order Number ASIN B0831SCHG8 ... not sure if one or the other is involved in some sort of "knock-off" deal or if this may perhaps be part of some "licensing" arrangement. I bring this up because as I've come to leave my views on this "NESCO" steamer, I've found that its availability is (at least for the time being) now relegated to a couple of outside vendors who are charging for this same item nearly and over TWICE what I'd originally purchased it for, the latter of which just so happens to be almost the exact same price as being offered by the "OVENTE" version... so maybe look into that one if interested. ... show more

  • This steamer is awesome for what I needed it for
I looove this steamer and definitely the price...!! I needed it for my hot dog buns.... I placed a few buns in the top steamer first and it took a lil too long for the steam to reach the buns...(my hot dogs were already done waiting separately) so I placed them in the bottom steamer and in less than a minute they were ready... not only were they perfectly warm....but also sooo soft and the buns did NOT get hard at all.....!! I heated (and ate) three hot dogs and all three rolls stayed super soft and warm...I highly recommend this..... I can't wait to try a turkey and cheese sandwich next...!! ... show more

  • I love this steamer !
Does a great job. the only problem I see is with the black fill line on the inside. It is all black and very difficult to find the proper fill line without using a flashlight to see it.

  • Taste the difference
With my first son, I resorted to store bought pure foods. With the newborn, I have tried my best to make home-made pures, as anything organic and preservative free is always better. When you boil vegetables and fruits, a lot of the nutrients are lost, steaming is a healthier option. I had searched multiple products but the reviews on this product were pretty good so I decided to give it a try. For the price, you can't beat it. This is my go to product for baby food making. It works fairly fast, the consistency of the food is where I need it to be and the taste is pure and authentic, not like boiled food. I have yet to try it on poultry or fish, but I have a feeling those will turn out great as well. The egg cooker is a plus! Would recommend. ... show more

  • Pictured one not the same
NESCO had 2 types of steamers, one with a removeable disc in the bottom bowl and a bottom bowl that is all one piece. The bottom bowl pictured on Amazons site is one piece, The bottom bowl received is two pieces, it has a removeable disc. What's the difference, the bowl with the removable disc wares out faster, this is my third purchase of this steamer (not all from Amazon). Its a great steamer, but if you use it twice a day everyday, like I do, give it 12 to 18months and the area around the insert starts to break down. I bought the insurance for 4 years this time. my next one is on the house. and maybe the one after that. I gave it 3 stars because no one ever reads 4 and 5 star ratings. The Steamer is worth a 5 star rating if you just use it occasionally. It'll last a long time. If your a diehard food steamer person (every day more than once), get the insurance for 4 years. ... show more

  • It works as a steamer
Item works (as a far as steaming goes) but does not have a bell on the timer, also when setting the timer you have to have to apply a bit of pressure on the dial towards to "0" to ensure start. IF you don't the timer will not move towards the "0". To explain, further, when you set a timer you move it to the 30 minute mark (as an example) and you would expect it to start moving/running towards the zero, this unit doesn't. The timer will not move unless you put some pressure on the timer knob toward to zero to start moving. Then you will hear the timer start to click towards count down. Because there isn't a bell on the timer, I have to set out microwave timer to notify me when the steaming time is complete. This is the only steamer I have ever owned that doesn't have a bell to notify you when the time has elapsed. Even a "Dollar Store" egg timer has a bell. ... show more

  • This is THE BEST rice cooker EVER !!!
This steamer/cooker steam cooks every type of rice I use to perfection ; it’s simple to use, set up and clean up after use. No more crusty or scorched rice like the more expensive other rice cookers I’ve bought and tried in the past ! It has the capacity to steam veggies , etcetera in a separate dish along with the rice so that a full meal cooks at the same time. I mainly use this just for making rice, primarily, and I recommend it to anyone who likes rice cooked right 👌 ... show more

  • Leaking water now after 2 years using
It’s a good steamer. But after two years, it’s leaking water now. I don’t know why. I can’t find the leaking hole, however the water is from the bottom.
