This does have a realistic wood fire sound to me. I played it for my husband and older daughter and they both thought it sounded kind of fake. We have an electric fireplace and I used it while relaxing and reading. The fact it has other uses might help justify the price.

I ordered this mostly to be funny by hiding this behind my little mini table top fire pit. It is funny since of course that does not produce a crackling fire. Is it realistic? Not really but depending on the volume level, location etc. it could pass if one wasn't really thinking about it. I wanted it to be funny and had it on full blast, which is quite loud. There are 8 different settings. Four are levels of crackling fire and the other 4 have crackling fire plus either music or nature sounds. Its USB rechargeable and the cable was included. I took off one star due to the fact that it did not come with any instructions. I thought at first it did not work on any setting but the first one because I could not figure out how to change them. I finally found how to do so in another review. You press and hold the volume up and or down button to change in between sounds. You quick press to move the volume up or down. My second issue is there in no indicator light that says that its charging or fully charged just a small blue light in the front that flashes when its on and flashes while charging so you just have to guess. It works as advertised so it gets 4 stars. I just find it an odd gadget. ... show more

Works well but sound is a little off. I got this to use with my fake fireplace. It has an adjustable volume so you can make it as loud or soft as you like. It is compact in size with a nice appearance so you could hide it anywhere and it will not be seen. The only issue is the sound has a bit of on echo. Nothing horrible and it will not prevent me from using this especially during the holidays. I live in Florida, it is about 100 degrees most of the time so a real fire just isn’t in the cards for us, but this will help it feel more like a real fire. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Several years ago I got to the point where hassling with a real fire in my indoor fireplaces became more than I wanted to do anymore, so I went with an electric log in one fireplace and gas in the other. But I sure do miss the crackling sound of a real fire - it's just kinda dead without that. Then I found little sound unit, and must (almost reluctantly) admit that so far I really like it. It has 8 different sound modes that play sounds that have been pre-recorded on the included micro SD card (see photo). Four of these are variations on the "crackling fire" sound from a low slow-burning to roaring (see photos of product insert for descriptions of these), and the other four add nature sounds and/or music to these; the volume adjustment allows them to play at whatever degree of loudness you want. So far I am not a fan of the stored music - it's pretty repetitive. But wait - there's more! It can also function as a Bluetooth speaker, and you can connect it to your smartphone and play whatever music you have stored on there. Now it's not the highest quality speaker in the world, so when I want music at home I'll play it through my home system instead, but this will work in a pinch and can function as a Bluetooth speaker wherever you may want to take it - outdoors, to the beach, on a picnic, whatever. Again, not the highest quality Bluetooth speaker in the world, but if you're willing to compromise some sound quality it's a fair alternative. For me though, I expect I'll use it exclusively as a fireplace crackling sound source (see video), and used in this way the mediocre speaker quality is not an issue.
