  • Love my Portable Buddy!
Color: Red Style: Heater
I bought this "Portable Buddy" as an emergency replacement for the Mr. Heater "Tough Buddy" my son gave me 4 or 5 years ago -- the only non-breathing entity for which I've ever developed a deep fondness! (The man on the Mr. Heater hotline says it can be fixed, so I'm keeping it.) But I needed heat immediately! I've never been happier to see a package at the Post Office! Amazon had a better price than local stores AND could get it to me in 2 days! (No local store had it in stock and it would have taken them at least a week to have it ready for pickup.) That's far too long for an old lady to be cold. I bought the fuel filter, too -- I believe -- after some research -- that not having one while using a 5-6 ft. hose and a 20# propane tank led to the malfunctioning of my Tough Buddy. (I was able to clean the pilot light tube to get it to light, but -- alas -- it wouldn't stay lit for more than 10-15 minutes.) The new Buddy portable heater gives GREAT heat! I live in the mountains in the southwest... in a partly-historic adobe house. I have a furnace, but I hate the blowing air (allergies) and the noise. And I guess I'm just tired of tending fires, though my fireplace has a firebox in it the blows heat throughout the "beehive" exterior. After being in this house for more than a dozen winters, I decided that it was stupid and expensive to try to heat the house, as I live alone... with my companion dog; my objective these days is to heat myself. The altitude hasn't been an issue. The portable Buddy lights easily and gives the direct warmth of a toasty fire while the vents at the top warm the surrounding area. I love this kind of instantly-warming heat. There is no comparison in my mind to a warm heater (or fire) with fresh air in the house and the stuffiness of a centrally-heated house. I use the heater only in the evenings, for reading and tv watching; I warm up on "high", but soon find myself switching to "low" and moving the heater farther away. I would never let it run unattended. I enjoyed using my fireplace for years, but you just can't get a good fire going as quickly as you can fire up this little heater! Compared to my old Tough Buddy, there have been some improvements made to this heater: The attachment (to the 1# propane tank pictured, or to the hose connecting to a 20# tank) now swivels -- which would make attaching the 1# tank infinitely easier. And there is a new pilot-lighting mechanism, now part of the main switch. I'm not sure how I feel about this change: It's worked fine so far, but I'm wondering if it will stand the time test, as I consider this a long-term purchase. The handle on top now swivels back, and there is now an oxygen-depletion sensor in addition to the tip-over sensor. The tip-sensor (in my old model) only went off once; the heater can be slid carefully, just not bumped. My dog treats it with respect, but I'd be careful around small children. The Mr. Heater hotline man told me the Buddy was exactly the same as the Tough Buddy. It may be, mechanically, but the new heater is lighter in weight and a bit smaller; the pad that lights up and gets hot is vertically oriented (TB was horizontal.) However, it's quite sturdy, and the really important part -- its heating ability -- is the same. I love it, and I'd recommend it for campers, people working in shops or garages, sports people and to anyone who can safely use a 20# propane tank, which is so much more economical than the 1# tanks. Terrific for emergencies! The caveat is that it shouldn't be left unattended, including while sleeping. P.S. Buy the fuel filter. I don't know enough about these things to review it, but I can attest to the fact that impurities (including added odorrants) in propane and the plasticizers in some propane hoses can lead to the untimely demise of this heater without a filter. Also, save the box for off-season storage of the heater; dust and spider webs would have to be cleaned out before re-use. And I'd suggest actually reading the user manual. ... show more

  • Small wonder
Color: Red Style: Heater
We love our new heater. It works great in our bathroom at night. It keeps our bathroom nice and cozy in this cold weather. It’s simply a small wonder. It’s very easy to light and use.

  • Perfect for our late season hunts
Color: Red Style: Heater
Bought the buddy heater to help prolong the sits in the hunting blind. Great investment! Works as it should and portable. If you are in a big open space it probably won’t work but to keep hands and feet warm it’s a the ticket. Bottle lasts awhile.

  • It's very rare that you purchase a product and it exceeds all your expectations!!!
Color: Red Style: Heater
Mr. Buddy Heater Mr. Heater F232000 MH9BX Buddy 4,000-9,000-BTU Indoor-Safe Portable Radiant Heater ITEM #: F232000 Model #: MH9BX Hmmm, Where do I start with this little gem? This item deserves more than 5 stars, its very rare that you purchase a product and it exceeds all your expectations My first time using this was on a Klondike Derby in a 10' x 10' EZ-Up tent with attached sides. Outside temp was hoovering around 30 degrees and was a bit cloudy. The heater worked flawlessly and kept the interior comfortable enough for a heavy shirt or sweater. My second time using the Mr. Buddy was on our winter trip February 20-22 2015. This is where I realized it was truly a great product. The Mr. Heater Portable Buddy was used in an 8 man Alaskan Guide Tent from Cabelas, the outside temp hit a low of -8°F. The heater worked well enough to warm the tent enough to sit in a light jacket. I was using refilled Propane Tanks, although I ordered the Mr. Buddy (NO FILTER REQUIRED) hose, Mr. Heater Buddy Series Hose Assembly - 10-ft., Model# F273704 we used the one pound propane bottles instead. I refilled a bunch using aMr. Heater F276172 Propane One Pound Tank Refill Adapter We had another heater, the Mr. Heater Big Buddy, Mr. Heater MH18B, Portable Propane Heater ITEM #: F274865 Model #: MH18B that we hooked to a 30 pound propane tank. Between these two heaters the "Portable Buddy" on low at 4,000 Btu's and the "Big Buddy" on medium at 9,000 Btu's the tent stayed toasty warm all weekend. We even took the "Portable Buddy" to a portapotti and heated the portapotti up to, "Do the 2". I felt comfortable leaving both of these heaters on when we slept, in fact we were stuck in the tent from Friday afternoon till Sunday morning and these were never shut off, we also ran a propane lantern on low at night and used a Camp Chef Everest High Output 2 Burner Stove for hot beverages and cooking. We had a carbon monoxide detector in the tent and it never once beeped, even after frying some porterhouse steaks and as load of potatoes. The Mr. Buddy Series heaters make no sound at all, has zero smell, are easy to use and are incredibly efficient. The piezo ignition works well, but I want to point out one thing, if the heater is pitched back slightly, the pilot will not light the propane , this is due to the angle of the ceramic, just make sure its on a flat surface. I would just tilt the heater slightly forward to ignite the propane. Tanks screw in with a little push to push through the seal in the propane, the fact that the connection swivels out makes changing out tanks easy. ... show more

  • Great for a kodiak
Color: Red Style: Heater
I love this little heater! It's really changed the whole camping experience. I camp at an event where it can get down into the 30s at night and this heater was a champ. I notice that it smells a little funny and that's a bit disconcerting (and I turned it off in the middle of the night once because I was concerned I hadn't opened enough windows) but once I got used to it, it worked fine. I also noticed that it will dry out the air a bit, which is good, but just keep that in mind. I felt safe because of the oxygen cutoff sensor too. The heat output is excellent. The tent was so nice and cozy I didn't even need to zip up my sleeping bag. I did keep all of the windows open about 2-3 inches just to be safe. ... show more

  • Works great
Color: Red Style: Heater
Purchased for two car garage which has been turned into craft room. Heats it perfectly. Pilot lights easily. Easy to set to high or low. Small canisters of propane screw right in. Really. Heating with this is super. And if the power should go out, I'll carry it up to a room I need to temporarily heat... It's got a handle and it's not heavy. ... show more

  • works great
Color: Red Style: Heater
Just a nice heater that puts out a lot of heat. While it's "safe" for indoor use because it's propane (no carbon monoxide) keep in mind that it does consume oxygen for combustion so if you're using it in a small enclosed space, be sure you have some ventilation so oxygen can enter the space.
