    • Actually DOES assemble fine without cable ties, but...

Ok, I read the reviews before I bought this and knew I would need cable ties to put it together, so I bought some even before I looked at the directions. Then, when it came time to put it together, I thought I'd try without the cable ties first just to see if it was possible. I got it almost all together, when the whole entire thing just fell apart. So then I started over, using cable ties as I went, so it wouldn't fall apart again. When I was almost done, I realized that some of the sections looked like they weren't matching up as they should, and I noticed that I had put it together wrong, or at least not in the best way. This is why: There are little "D" shaped hooks at the corners that hold the sides together. At first, I figured they'll hook on to just wherever they seemed to match up on the opposite panel, but this won't work. Unless it's in the right place, the cage will fall apart. I believe this is why some reviewers said the cage would just fall apart. Here is the right place: the "D" shaped hooks go directly UNDER a horizontal wire. That latches them in, and makes the cage quite sturdy even without cable ties. I used cable ties to loosely hold things together until I latched them in at the right place, then I removed the cable ties (I have the kind with a release, so they're reusable). If I had someone helping me, I probably wouldn't need cable ties at all. The platforms seem sturdy. They support the weight of my 10-lb cat with no problems, but I may add some cable ties there later, just for peace of mind. How did the cats like it? My adventurous cat, Tarzan, couldn't wait for me to finish putting it together. I had to keep the doors closed so he wouldn't go in there until I was done. Then, when I finished, I opened the doors and he went right in and played and played. It took him a little while to figure out how to jump from platform to platform, but he got it. He really liked the bed that came with it. My lazy scardey-cat, Jayne, ran away and hid once the cage fell apart when I first tried to put it together (it made a loud noise). After I was done, she came out timidly, got close enough to sniff it, and then ran away. Later, I put her in the bottom of the cage and petted her, and she was okay for about 30 seconds before she wanted out. It's going to be a process with her. She won't even use a new bed for months. She won't even touch a new bed for months. She doesn't like new things. Whenever she hears the metal sound of me opening or closing the doors, she runs away. She is a very atypical cat, though. Don't pay attention to her. My other cat loves it, and goes in there voluntarily. Overall, Pluses: *Great value for the money *Large size *Does assemble without zip ties *Feels sturdy (if assembled the correct way) *Doors latch securely, but simple enough for a human to open and close *Doors also on the top level, so gives easy access to upper platforms *Double doors are also very wide, taking up almost a whole side. Or, you can open only one at a time. *Bed is very nice. Velcros to the platform, easy for a human to remove *Slide-out tray at the bottom for easy cleaning *Adjustable platforms, so you can raise or lower them *Folds flat for storage or travel. All the side panels are permanently connected to the bottom, so you don't have to figure out which panel is the side, which is the top, etc. Everything is connected. You just have to connect the corners to assemble. *Additional zip-ties may be used for added sturdiness and/or peace of mind, especially at the top and on the platforms Minuses: *Directions it came with are pretty much useless. It doesn't tell you how to properly put it together. Now that I look again, there IS a picture of where the "D" shaped clip is supposed to go, but it wasn't made clear at first how important the location of the clip is, in relation to the horizontal wires. A person would assume that clip could go anywhere on the corner. The directions also tell you to add the wheels pretty much last, although I wish I had put the wheels on first as the cage is huge! *Might be difficult for one person to put together, unless using zip-ties to temporarily hold the panels together *The top still doesn't seem to fit 100% perfectly, but 90% is close enough for me. I feel fine leaving the top panel with no zip ties, but another owner may want to put a couple zip ties up there just in case. *A couple latches are just hanging around, and I'm not sure what they're supposed to be used for yet. The directions don't mention them. (They're the small latches at the bottom of the short sides, if anyone else can leave me a comment and let me know what those are for.) *One door latch is stuck. I'll have to get some pliers and fix that. I'm sure this is just a fluke, and should be an easy fix. *I wish the platforms were a few inches wider, but my cat seems to like it fine the way it is ... show more

Style: Playpen
Once this is assembled and zip tied, this is great. We adopted two three month old kittens from a shelter and they were used to being in an enclosed space. We are gradually introducing them to our 3 story house and our 75 lb playful Golden Retriever. The main drawback is the assembly. I am very handy and could not assemble this by myself. The side panels kept falling in before I could latch them. The instructions were not great and would benefit from better pictures or maybe a YouTube video. Make sure you roll the front and back bars in and the side bars out before latching. We also used tons of zip ties to close the gaps as suggested in other reviews. Then came the really tedious part of installing the casters (wheels). It is exceedingly difficult to get the bottom nut threaded onto the bolt. There are 16 of these bolts that are needed and it took me like 2 hours to get all of them on. I debated whether it would be easier to put the wheels on before assembling and I don’t think. It will be a huge pain no matter what. Set aside 3-4 hours to assemble this thing and plan to leave it assembled unless you are moving. I definitely do not consider this “portable”. I also think it should come with a bunch of zip ties. Assembly aside, we were able to put the shelves at kitten friendly heights, The kitties love the bed and are quite comfortable.     • Used to facilitate the re-introduction of adult cats
Style: Playpen
Goal: Behavior Modification With the goal of happy cats in a harmonious environment, we purchased the Cat Playpen to facilitate the re-introduction of two adult cats that had a falling out. The theory is that if cats can see each other from a secure crate the aggressor forgets to be aggressive and the victim forgets to act like a victim thus breaking the cycle of aggression. Eventually, Aggressor and Victim take turns in the crate so everyone gets used to seeing each other just hanging "about." The behavior expert that I got this idea from said this process may take several months. Background A few years ago our home was the last stop before the Pound for a kitten who had been abused by some idiot who, no doubt, thought it was cool to have such a alternately sweet loving kitten and rough and tumble vicious little bully. It took months of work to teach the kitten bite inhibition and respectful manners. Nineteen months after he arrived, we were begged to take his ailing and fearful littermate who had been "put outside due to allergies." Eventually, Sis regained her health and integrated with the all of our feline/canine crew except for her rough and tumble brother and a young female who our now usually-self-controlled bully was mentoring. We tried our usual techniques to achieve and maintain harmony, but nothing brought about permanent harmony/integration. Playpen setup All of our cats are used to self-scooping litter boxes so i put a small LitterMaid (LM500) in the Playpen. Over that I put a table constructed to fit precisely over the box and then draped a large bath towel over the table (for their privacy and my view). On top of the table/towel I added a large cat bed. For the food and water bowls i attached stainless steel coop (parrot) cups with bolt clamps to the front panel of the crate. (Many cats will refuse to use a litter box that is too near their food or water and this keeps it at a respectable distance and off the bottom of the crate.) Two of the shelves were added to opposite ends of the crate above the table/bed, and the third shelf ended up on top of the Playpen after cats kept jumping up there. Playpen PROS Folds down to a small easy to store size. Easy to assemble for someone who has experience with folding crates (see note about cable ties). The double latch of the doors is very secure and seems cat proof. Multi level shelves and crate is of a good size for a couple of adult cats. Narrow bars, it will be handy for kittens to keep them safe when they cannot be watched. LitterMaid (small LM500) fits well. Casters, excellent idea, see note about casters below. Playpen ASSEMBLY and Misc NOTES After reading the assy instructions, I found it easier to do it this way... (1) Unfold the crate (I left it on the cardboard to protect the hardwood). (2) Tip the base onto its side toward the front panel, then put the casters on. (3) Return it to right-side-up onto the casters. (4) Put in the tray. (5) Lift the front panel and one end panel and secure them with a couple of cable ties. (6) Lift the other end panel and secure it to the front panel with cable ties. (7) Place the litter box, litter, and cover (table, in this case) if using one, on the tray. (8) Lift the back panel, secure it to each end panel with cable ties. (9) Flip the top into place and secure it with cable ties. (10) Add shelves, beds, toys, food (with a couple of treats on top) and water bowls. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver, small pliers or adjustable wrench (or very strong fingers), and diagonal cutters if you use cable ties. Playpen CONS The shelf supports are off center so the crate the doors can still be opened once the shelves are installed, being cantalevered like this allows the shelf to flex when a 14 pound cat jumps onto it. After adding a cable tie to the free corner at the back of the crate the shelves are more stable. The top does not fit the four sides well, but after securing it with additional cable ties, it feels secure. (Putting the third shelf up there and securing its corners with cable ties probably didn't hurt either.) *** Cable ties, buy a large package of the long ones, black will match the crate's paint best. *** ***** I would not trust the Playpen we received to be safe (for cats or fingers) or secure without the cable ties! ***** *** Casters, these are of very poor quality and not up to the 40-50 pounds of two cats and accessories that i have in the Playpen. (The manufacturer did think about the weight of the cat and its accessories?) If the Playpen isn't rolling in the direction the wheels are pointed they scoot rather than turn - and this is on hardwood floors! It is going to cost me about $20 for better quality casters, and an hour or so to un-assemble and re-assemble the entire Playpen to replace them but it is necessary. (What a pain!) People with carpet, especially plush carpet, might want to see what other reviewers have to say about how well the casters do or don't work on carpet. Each morning, after their breakfast I put my two bullies in the Playpen and roll them to wherever I am and then eventually to my office, since they prefer hang out on my desk all day while i work they seem to like this a lot better than being confined in another room! After only three days, I can see some relaxation in all three cat's attitude toward each other when they are all in the same room. ... show more

I researched alot on cat play pens. I currently have an Amazon basics and it's great and held up well even through 3 moves. I bought this one because it has double doors which makes it easier to clean. The problem is the "used (like new) product" is more used than stated in the description. Takes 2 people to put together because of bent wires. Looks like it will be fine for the most part but be aware "like new" isn't always true. More than disappointed ... show more
