As with any hobby, there are multiple grades of tools and equipment that facilitate the enjoyment one garners from it. And as you attain skill, the quality of the tools you're able to properly utilize and appreciate increases - as does the price. On the flip side, buying tools that aren't up to the task can ruin an otherwise good time. I believe this metal detector does a good job of filling that gap between an entry level and intermediate grade tool and the hobby of metal detecting. It functions appropriately well, even if the interface is a bit of a learning curve. And it comes with accessories like a carrying bag and headphones that make the whole thing just a little bit more palatable as you learn how it all works. When a part from one of my lawn maintenance tools went flying off into the woods adjacent to my house, there was little hope of finding it beneath the thick layer of leaves. But, with a little experimentation and some fastidious scanning, I was able to locate it with this metal detector Within a few minutes. While I doubt that this will be the last metal detector you ever buy should the metal detecting bug bite you, this seems to be a good way to find out if the hobby is right for you. ... show more

This metal detector works ok, I wouldn't say that it is a professional metal detector, the entire thing is made out of plastic, I do like the quick release buckles on the rod, it makes it fast and easy to extend and fold up, the LCD display screen is easy to read and it has a backlight, the 11.8 inch search coil is also nice it covers a large area and it's somewhat waterproof, as far as detecting metals and coins, the metal detector does detect metals pretty good, but when I tested the detection with 4 different coins that I buried in my yard, it tended to miss the coins at times and it often failed to correctly identify the coin on the display screen, the depth range is good, I had a couple of the coins about 4ft deep and it did detect them and the range on the LCD screen was pretty close to the actual depth, the detector has 6 modes like discrimination mode, coins and memory mode, another feature I like is the this detector has a volume control and a headphone jack and it comes with a pair of headphones too, it also came with a small foldable camp shovel and a backpack to store and carry the metal detector, overall this is a decent metal detector for someone just starting out, a little pricey in my opinion for the overall quality and performance. ... show more

I absolutely love this thing! I have always wanted to try metal detecting and this was a great introduction for the price point. I read the manual and with a couple of 9 volt batteries I was on my way! I would recommend getting a sand scoop to go with it or if you're doing your yard, a small hand shovel.     • Save your money and time. Get a REAL metal detector

Either my property is on top of a shallow ore field or this things is garbage. Which one do you think I'm opting for? I bought it to find a metal survey marker that got buried and we can't find it. It's 3" in diameter and would be just below the surface. I got it assembled, took it outside, turned it on and it wouldn't stop showing targets. Even with the sensitivity turned down, I couldn't go six inches with a hit on numerous metals. So, I tired switching to DISC mode and tuning out all but coins, precious metals, etc. When I got a hit and used the pinpoint mode to lock it in, I dug down until I couldn't get a reading (when I COULD get one, that is) then I started going over my dig pile. I got a hit on that so I started sifting. There wasn't a damn thing in there. Just gravel and dirt. Then, I went inside and got a 2.5 gram gold bar and a 1 oz silver coin and put them on the floor. The detector would only pick them up about half the time when I passed over them. Fast or slow didn't matter. Save your money and go with a reputable brand like Minelab, White or Garrett. Getting this for the kiddies to get them started will only serve to frustrate and discourage them so don't do it. ... show more
