Works well. It's so much easier and works so much better than doing it by hand.

  • Updated review
Color: Pink
After the first ball of worsted baby yarn which was a disaster to wind with this device, I decided to retry and rewind the loose cakes in hopes to get a better result. With the yarn flowing freely the device actually managed to rewind an entire cake at a time with only minimal stops requiring unplugging and replugging. But it was still a very loose cake. I then tried Lionbrand Ice Cream baby yarn which is a lot finer, and the machine did manage to wind the yarn as it was flowing mostly freely. But it is still also a very loose cake. So here is my conclusion: The motor in this machine is extremely weak, no question about it. Do not even try to wind sports weight yarn since it will be the same frustration that I encountered. The machine works semi decent only with fine yarn that has no knots and flows freely. As soon as yarn bunches up the machine stops which it is supposed to do. But then I must reset mine via un- and re-plugging and on and off and often several times before it works again. I finally figured out the tension stations which still really aren't: when lifting up the bottom plate of the very weak springs it reveals the peg which has a slot to guide the yarn through. The spring loaded top is then supposed to keep tension on the yarn, but it doesn't do that because the plate doesn't reach the bottom of the peg. So basically those flimsy thingies just keep the yarn more aligned. Not exactly a deal breaker, the machine still winds the yarn, just a lot looser than my hand cranked Stanwood winder. It is just nicer--in theory-- to give my arms and one damaged and one replacement shoulder a break. But I am still returning this machine because of the connection issue which I think will have the device die completely before long. And $59 is way too much for such an unreliable machine. Due to the aforementioned issues I cannot rate it any higher than one star. If they improve the motor and tension and fix that extremely irksome connection issue without changing the already high price for an all plastic device, then my rating will go up. But not as it is now. _____________________ --------------------------- Original review after fighting the machine for several hours: ZERO stars if I could. The connection craps out literally every 20-30 seconds, and I have to pull out and replug the power cord on the unit each and every time. This thing is weak and stops at the slightest yarn tug and then I have to do this plug thing. The so-called tensions are a joke because they are so flimsy that the yarn won't stay under which makes for a very loose cake --- if you ever make it that far without tossing that thing. I won't ask for a replacement, this is going back. And since I have a suspicion that I received a returned unit based on the packaging I will write "defective" in bold black letters on the box to save another customer extreme frustration. For the price I expected this to be a lot better. Now I will have to rewind the two mushy cakes I managed to wind into a solid cake with my manual winder. ... show more

  • An excellent automatic version of the old-fashioned, tried & true hand operated yarn winders
I got this Electric Yarn Winder as a replacement for one I have. The design of this one is so much better - the post that the yarn will wind on has a good size base to accommodate heavier yarns without having to cut them. It also slants upward, so no problems with the winding yarn falling off the post before its done. The clamp for securing the winder to the table or counter is long enough to be able to use it on very thick or thin surfaces and is shaped so that it can attach to the overhang of a countertop very easily. The spring used to run the yarn though for a bit of tension should do its job nicely; it has just enough tension to keep the yarn free of tangles as it winds, but not so tight that it stretches the yarn, and it's well out of the way of the ball of yarn that will be forming on the post. For operating, there is a small dial on the side that you turn for adjusting the speed. Top speed is fast enough to make short work of winding a skein of yarn but not so fast that you'll loose control. I am very happy with this update to my knitting supplies and easily recommend it to others. ... show more

  • Easy to use
This winder is very easy to use and works quite reliably. It is consistent and doesn't tangle up easily. A lot easier to use than a manual one. Only reason I would take one star of is that for $50, it seems a bit expensive with many on the market for under $20.

  • Light Duty Electric Yarn Winder Saves Effort but Needs Some Tweaks
Faster than a nostepinne, less effort than a manual winder, an electric center-pull ball winder is a welcome addition to many fiber studios, especially for weavers, spinners and machine knitters. Crocheters and knitters will also like it. Hand dyers will love how easy it is to change from balls to skeins and back to balls. This particular winder works well on smooth yarns of several grists and is sufficient for most light-duty users. It would not be sufficient for a busy studio or store. Unlike manual winders on which it is based, this one is capable of winding a much bigger ball and appears less likely to mis-feed the yarn. When a feeding problem develops, it tends to stop and wait for you to fix things rather than continue winding, getting the yarn hopelessly caught in the gears below. In fact, the metal gears on this winder are sealed in the mechanism below and therefore inaccessible to your yarn. (However, once when I was winding a yarn that broke, it did wrap around the base but that was easy to undo.) In ideal conditions you may be able to walk away and let it wind while you do other tasks. If your yarn does snarl, causing the unit to stop feeding, just turn it off, wait a few seconds and begin again. However there's one really big flaw in the design of this unit. It lacks an additional yarn guide which would be relatively easy to add to the bottom of the post with the other guides. I crafted an additional spiral guide out of 18 gauge soft copper wire and it improved this unit's performance a great deal, especially on yarns which cause it problems such as bulkies, thick-and-thins, boucles, multiple strands, etc. Here are my hints for its use: --Make sure you secure the unit very well to a sturdy table. I thought I had but had to make it even tighter. --I don't think a paper core is necessary as this unit makes balls that don't collapse as easily. If you want a paper core you can use a strip of paper or use a toilet paper core or a paper towel core cut in half. The stem of this unit is thinner than either of these cores so you'll want to slice each vertically and tape them to fit the smaller circumference. You can insert the original yarn wrapper inside this core to remember your exact information on color, dye lot, fiber content, etc. --Start off and end each ball on a slower speed to avoid yarn barfs which are in so many manufactured balls these days. Once things are going well adjust the speed to the fastest one which will do the job. This is especially important when your source is handspun which tends to be denser rather than so many cheap craft yarns which are more air than fiber. --If you're having trouble feeding your yarn and can't figure out how to make your own extra yarn guide, use your hand or jerry-rig something else to hold it. One way to do this is put your source ball in a basket and feed the yarn through its handle. Or you can pre-reel a yard or two by hand ahead of the machine's take-up. This helps especially if your source ball is heavy or if you're working with a more challenging yarn. Don't reel out too much or you may create tangles. Experiment with your hand positions to get the smoothest feed. --Remember that with a center wound ball you can double your stands which is called for in some patterns. You’ll do this by simultaneously drawing from the inside and outside of the ball. It's also very handy when you will be plying handspun yarn as you will automatically be dividing the source yarn in half as you go, meaning that you won't have any unusable leftover lengths of unplied yarn. -------------- Improvements I suggest for the future: --Include an additional yarn guide at the bottom of the stem. --Include a yarn mast from the bottom of this same stem. --Make the openings in the top and bottom yarn guides larger to accommodate more yarns. Better yet, make them coiled wire which will allow you to wind the yarn into the guide without threading it. --Increase the power to accommodate more yarns. --Add a foot control. This could be an on/off control so machine can pause while hands feed or detangle yarns and then return to previous winding speed. Or it could be an on/off and speed control. --Make this unit able to run on a rechargeable battery which will enable users to take it to workshops and meetings of crafting groups. ... show more
