Frequently asked questions

The Medela Symphony Breast Pump is a hospital-grade, electric breast pump known for its efficiency and comfort during pumping. Compared to other pumps, it offers single or double pumping options, allowing for flexible milk expression. Its hospital-grade designation means it's designed for multiple users (with their own pumping kit) and is built for long-term, frequent use, making it more durable and powerful than standard personal-use pumps. Furthermore, it incorporates Medela's 2-Phase Expression technology, simulating a baby's natural nursing rhythm more closely than many other pumps on the market.

Yes, the Medela Symphony Breast Pump is designed for both single and double pumping. You have the flexibility to choose between single or double pumping based on your needs, time constraints, or comfort level. When double pumping, it can help save time and may increase milk production.

Yes, comfort is one of the key features of the Medela Symphony Breast Pump. It is engineered with 2-Phase Expression technology, which mimics a baby's natural nursing pattern - a gentle stimulation mode followed by a more intense expression mode. This technology, along with adjustable suction levels, allows for a more comfortable and efficient pumping experience.

The Medela Symphony Breast Pump is a hospital-grade pump designed for multiple users, but it requires each user to have their own personal double pumping kit for hygiene and safety reasons. Sharing the pump unit itself is safe when each mother uses her own pumping kit, which includes the breast shield, tubing, bottles, and other components that come into contact with the milk.

  • Hospital grade breast pump
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony Plus
I bought this for my daughter in law, it is very expensive! But my daughter in law was having trouble expressing milk to feed my Grandtwins.

  • The best pump
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony Plus
This is my everyday pump and it works beautifully. It fully empties my breasts with a little help from my hands for the armpit areas. I have very large and dense breasts and I am an oversupplier and this pump works better than a few others I’ve tried. I use the Medela freestyle flex when I’m not at home and it does a good job but the symphony is top tier. ... show more

  • Worth it?
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony Plus
We bought this thinking it would be the key to helping with my pumping. I don’t know that the price is worth it though. I felt like I get the same level of pumping out of my “lower” model of pump. It’s big and bulky also, which made it a pain to move when I needed to. Also, it’s small, but annoying to me: one of the feet fell off the bottom within a couple weeks of purchasing it. ... show more

  • The best pump ever invented
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony
I tried using other pumps with my first three children and I was sadly one of those mom's who struggled to produce enough milk. I went dry after two to three months while pumping with the less than powerful pumps. This hospital grade pump was the only one that ever helped me because of its power. It has different pumping intervals that also help you to produce more milk so when my 4th and 5th child came along I broke down and bought this pump. It was amazing and helped me to go a full year feeding my last two children. I would recommend this pump to anyone. ... show more

  • Great while it lasts. God help you if/when it breaks
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony
This is a powerful, efficient pump. Exclusive pumpers & working moms know that shaving time off each pumping session & maintaining supply are both critical to successfully feeding your baby breastmilk. So while it lasts, this pump is good for those reasons. BUT. I agree wholeheartedly with all the other reviews about nightmare customer service. Mine suddenly broke after 7 months. After a total of 2 hours worth of phone calls, they informed me it would be 6 weeks to repair it. Refused to pay for the rental in the interim. They reminded me that it was "a mechanical device that can break & that I'm not the only exclusive pumper waiting for a repair." Infuriating lack of customer service for such an expensive & critical item! Like you, I sprung for this pricey pump out of necessity, but am now still having to rent one. When it breaks, you have hours (not weeks) to find an alternative, and Medela simply does not care. As a mother & pediatrician, I think Medela should be ashamed. ... show more

  • Go ahead and buy it
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony
My wife loves her pump. She was using little hand-held pumps for a few months and it was taking forever. I bought her this pump about six months ago. It was the right decision. I waffled for a week or two because of the price. Then I tried to find a used one, but discovered that a used one may not be as reliable since it has probably been passed around for awhile. I would definitely buy again. The sooner the better. No, I don’t work for Medela. ... show more

  • Must have if your baby does not latch.
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony
This pump is awesome! After burning thru two of the pumpin style advance pumps (diaphragm, and motor) I purchased this. All the parts are fixable unlike the other pumps. The pump in style is more for the part-time pumper who's baby latches without problem. If your baby is like mine that have been tounge tied, or just lazy latcher...this pump will keep your supply up and is less noisey than the pump in style. This is a closed system pump unlike the pump in style. The symphony is so silent my husband even asked if it was working. LOVE THIS PUMP & should have purchased earlier. ... show more

  • Expensive but good
Pattern Name: Breast Pump Style: Symphony
We bought this after using a Philips Avent pump for a little while and running a bit short on milk in hopes of it improving the pumping volumes. It did but not to the extent that some reviewers have said when comparing it with the lower grade Medelas. Instead the biggest advantage of using the Symphony pump it that it is quiet and more comfortable. The whole system also has less parts and is less fidgety so if you plan to pump a lot getting it instead of the Philips might make sense if saving some time cleaning it is worth the extra money. The pump comes without any of the necessary accessories so you will need to buy a pumping starter kit. ... show more
