Description

Landscapers and contractors are demanding more cordless alternatives to gas- powered outdoor power equipment. Makita is meeting demand with an expanding line of cordless OPE, including the 18V X2 LXT (36V) Brushless 16” Chain Saw (XCU04PT1). With zero emissions, lower noise, and considerably less maintenance, the XCU04PT1 is a welcome solution for cutting and trimming applications. It’s powered by two 18V LXT Batteries for maximum power, speed and run-time, but without leaving the strongly-preferred 18V battery platform. And with the efficient Makita outer rotor brushless motor with direct drive system, users get high power efficiency that is equivalent to a gas chain saw. The XCU04PT1 has a 16” guide bar and the Makita-built Outer Rotor BL Brushless Motor direct drive system motor with variable speed delivers 0-3, 940 FPM for increased cutting speed. It has zero emissions and reduced maintenance: there's no engine oil to change, no spark plug to replace, and no air filter or muffler to clean. And there's no need to drain the fuel for storage. Simply pick it up, load two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries, and the saw is ready to use. Convenience features include a tool-less chain adjustments, a front hand guard engineered to actuate chain brake when engaged, an electric brake for maximum productivity, and more. It’s part of Makita’s expanding 18V LXT System, the world’s largest cordless tool system powered by 18V lithium-ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls . Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection- equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Pricing was Hinky - But Makita Chainsaw has been Very Good
So the chainsaw was listed on Amazon for ~$340, but when I added it to the cart, the priced went up considerably. I called amazon and the first "agent" refused to honor the advertised price. So I called back, and the "agent" listened to me (which the first one didn't do) and said they would give me a gift card credit for the difference in the advertised price and the cart price. Which they did. I've resisted buying a battery powered chainsaw for awhile, but the price was less than I could buy the four (4) 5 Ah batteries for at the local Home Depot. So I have the saw, dual charger and four (4) batteries for less money than HD wants for three (3) batteries. I'm invested in the Makita battery system with several other tools - so it only made sense to go Makita for the chainsaw. I've used the saw for about ten (10) hours (actual running) now and have been very pleased. As long as you have access to electricity for the charger, you can charge the spare set of batteries in less time (~45 mins) than you will typically "run down" the batteries in the saw. Some reviews have criticized the bar/chain integrity. All of the battery powered saws I've seen use a narrow kerf bar/chain. All chains will "loosen/stretch" quickly in the first few hours of use - and must be re-tensioned frequently. This especially applies to narrow kerf chains. After the first two (2) to four (4) hours (probably five (5) to six (6) adjustments) the chain has "settled in" and only requires attention at every other battery change or so. I'm told that battery electric saws "like" to engage at full speed, and this saw isn't an exception. The chain needs to be at speed before cutting engagement - probably more so than a gasoline saw. And electric saws "like" to be run with a sharp chain- well, to be fair, all saws like to be run with a sharp chain - but electric saws seem to be more sensitive. I use the Stihl "2-in-1" sharpener every other battery change (about five (5) minutes to sharpen a chain on the saw) and it works very well. The "tool-less" chain tension adjustment works very well, and the chain oiler (as adjusted from the manufacturer) seems about right. The Makita saw is compared to a Stihl MS170 gasoline saw - and I believe it (maybe a bit better cutting than the MS 170). But the Makita system is more expensive - so it depends on if you are invested in the Makita battery system. This saw will never replace my MS310 or 35+ year old USA made Poulan S2000 arborist (which is now almost impossible to find parts for) - but the Makita is now a "go-to" for about 60%-70% of my chainsaw needs. You can see a good comparison of battery electric chainsaws at Project Farm (here): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aBZt8m1XkQ The DeWalt appears to be #1 and the Makita #2. Not to take away from the DeWalt, but the Makita battery system is arguably better (and the reason the Makita finished 2nd ). The Makita battery protection system allows the battery to be discharged less. This reduces overall run time, but reduces recharge** time and increases overall battery life. **The battery forced air cooling system also reduces recharge time. If you can charge batteries, you can't functionally "outrun" the Makita saw with two (2) sets of batteries- but you can with DeWalt***. ***Granted, you can run a bit longer with a single charge - and cut a bit faster with the DeWalt. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Won't replace a gas but that's not the point
This is a thin kerf, light duty chainsaw, it's not going to replace my Husky 16 inch gas but with that being said, it's actually a pretty capable lightweight little saw. The thin kerf I feel is Makita's way of getting the most out of the motor and it has a lot of torque for what it is. This isn't your aunt's plug in Black n Decker. It comes with an Oregon chain and you have to assemble it out of the box. Not maybe my only gripe is the novel bar tightener, it's a hub that uses the pull out handle to tighten down the bar, I do wonder how long the handle will last as you need to crank down fairly hard to hold the bar in place, but if that part can be replaced i am not to concerned. I popped the chain a couple of times before I found the sweet spot on how hard to crank it down and after that I had no issues. The tensioner is actually pretty cool, it;s a paddle wheel that is easy to use and better than the ones on gas saws. You loosen the hold down dial, turn the paddle wheel and re tighten the dial, easy. The drive sprocket could theoretically accommodate a thicker kerf chain and the bar looks like the same dimensions as an echo bar. Just a thought. The best part is that the system requires no tools at all. Now the saw feels kinda long compared to a 16 inch gas but it's also lighter so that allows me to hold it further out to do finer cuts. It has a good balance too. It;s trippy getting used to the fact that the chain stops so quick after you let go of the trigger not like my gas chains. The battery life is surprisingly long which i did not expect, I own 30 5 amp batteries so I personally don't care but having a second pair charged and ready is a good idea if you plant to use this all day. Oh and the oil system is awesome, not as goopy and messy as all of my gas saws. Probably the coolest part of this saw is how quiet it is compared to a gas saw, I mean, it's really quiet. I fired it up at 9 in the morning and couldn't imagine anyone complaining about it. In closing, I like this saw for what it is, a light duty little torque monster that can work it's way though wood around the size of your upper leg but I'm not trying to fell trees with it. Good for bucking and surprisingly nimble in the hands for finer pruning cuts. Edit: so I changed out the bar with an Echo 14inch bar and the thicker kerf chain and tackled a toppled 40 ft tree. Went through two pairs of batteries and the saw did fine. Still not quite as much torque as my echo cs 310 but still did fine. It's a lot quieter and no mixed gas ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This is literally better than sliced bread! No fighting with bad gas or it dying right before you go to make a cut. It's ready to cut instantly and the batterys last much longer than I expected.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Works well. Weight balances, powerful, and ingenious design tightening the chain. I had to stop my self from cutting more. I have not used it long term but first time out was awesome

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for around the house clean up
Love the strength of this saw. Best thing is not having to upgrade to different batteries and still getting 36 volts of power. Makita is brilliant for that alone. All my older batteries work in this.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Cuts like a gas saw of the equivalent size
Decided to test the saw today. I cut just shy of a truckload of wood. 3 Fills of the Side by Side. The saw cut well and the batteries lasted actually better than expected. I never actually ran till they stopped each time. I did. I only found one issue; but, it is just info about the saw. It has safety like all the Makita line where if it can't turn it won't While cutting the chain came off ( My fault waited a cut to long to retighten.) but it did minor damage to the chain itself. A few of the chain guides that run in the blade were scuffed just enough to make them to wide to fit comfortable back into the blade. So when I tried to run the saw after the safety wouldn't let it turn. ( a gas engine would have. ) I had to take the chain and clean up the damaged points. and then returned to work. I an really pleased with the performance. ... show more
