  • Its a hoss
I wanted the power of a worm drive and the visibility of the cut line since I am right handed, but didn't want to deal with manually applying oil to the gears. Sawdust and oil aren't the most pleasant of byproducts. This hypoid saw with closed gears in a oil bath seemed like a great solution. And it is. Its kind of heavy and I doubt my wife would use it comfortably, but for me its only a little noticeable since the length of it makes it unwieldy for lining up a cut one handed. Once its set on the material though its easy to use and its not so heavy it unbalances me at the end of cut, partially because it cuts so smoothly. I was able to complete 20+ cuts along both edges of 8' 3/4" OSB in maybe 10-15 mins. It was accessible enough to use while building a fence and quickly where I needed to trim sections of treated 2x4s which all had slightly different lengths. I was able to perform longer cuts by reaching one hand to fully extend my reach without it binding, going crooked, or clumsily collapsing my material when cut completely through. ... show more

  • Good working, name brand worm-drive, for the $
Not as light as one would prefer, though none are. For a good name brand, this is about the best buy I could find, including from all the big-box hardware stores and Harbor Freight.

  • a great saw but heavy
well they all said in the reviews this was a heavy saw. I just did not think it would be a big deal for me because I am a 190 lb man that works outdoors all day but it really is a hand full!! with this said I would still buy it! I love this thing and will never go back to the old sidewinder saw. its a bad ass when it comes to cutting wood! just know if you get one that it is heavy. I can use it with one hand but I can tell I got a hand full of power when I do. ... show more

  • Love this!!!
This thing is a beast. The power and accuracy is beyond satisfactory. Cuts through 2x4s and with zero resistance. It is heavy so it's not for everyone. Ergonomically suited to both right and left-handed users. Definitely a steal at $139.

  • It's all about having the right tool for the job.
I am a do-it-yourselfer (when it makes sense). Most of what I do can be categorized as light construction and finish carpentry. My tools include some high-end, professional grade products, and some cheap stuff for those once-in-a-blue-moon projects. I consider this Makita Hypoid Saw one of my professional grade tools. I have owned several circular saws purchased at the big box stores - all of which were crap. I do not use a circular saw a lot, so the cheap Skil saw I had purchased at Lowe's was sufficient for a while. This was not one of my go-to tools. But after years (decades) of pent up frustration with the cheap saw, I decided to buy a "real" circular saw, instead of one of those entry level toys. This Makita Hypoid Saw is awesome! Fit and finish is outstanding. It is smooth and cuts through treated lumber like butter. It actually has less start-up torque than the cheap Skill sidewinder I had been using, has solid and controllable adjustments . . . and is a lot more powerful. This will now be one of my go-to tools. I have not used it a lot, since I have only had it for a couple weeks, but it is in the same class of tools as my Milwaukee jig saw, Delta cabinet saw, Delta miter saw and Craftsmen reciprocating saw. I am very happy with this Makita Hypoid Saw, and highly recommend this product. UPDATE 8/7/13: I have used this saw several times now. This is one incredible saw!! I have even used this for some woodworking projects - cutting cabinet-grade plywood for book cases, to length. Even using the standard 24 tooth blade that came with the saw I am getting a smooth finish cut. I usually rough cut lengths within 1/8" to 1/16" and finish by trimming with a router. This saw has been so accurate that I have been able to cut lumber to the exact length. I love this saw. You will not be sorry if you decide to invest in this tool. ... show more

  • Workhorse Saw
The is great! It has all the torque needed to cut anything. It is a bit heavy compared to the basic saws but its worth it because its easy to glide across the board. It definitely a great saw
