This is really a decent little hot pot. It really has to work hard to get type metal hot enough to fully liquify, but it gets the job done. It's lightweight enough that when you get to the bottom of a batch & don't have enough lead left to dip, you can (CAREFULLY) pick up the whole unit and pour an ingot directly out of the pot. It'd be good to have a handle on the back of the "control tower" for that purpose. For most purposes, the temperature control is wasted; at the highest setting, the pot only reaches about 650F, a little higher than the melting point of lead (621F) or high-hardness foundry type. Linotype melts at a little lower temperature, but it doesn't hurt to get linotype up to 650. I can't think of any really good reason to run this pot at anything less than the highest setting. The included handbook, ingot mold, and bottom-pour dipper are superb. The included bullet lubes are a waste unless you already have a lube-size press (unlikely, if you're only budgeting for this little hot pot - if you own one of those presses you're more likely to spring for an upscale 20-lb-capacity bottom-pour pot) or come up with a clever way to use hollow wax sticks to lube your bullets (hint: mix them with mineral spirits and use the resulting liquid as you would use Liquid AlOx for pan lubing). ... show more

    • Does as advertised. It's got some issues. But it works.
It does as advertised. It melts lead. I don't much care dor the temperature control. It just needs an on/off switch. it keeps cycling power and it keeps the lead in a liquid with oxide layer on top. Which leads to my only complaint. Having to dip out of the thing is counterproductive. You can't get what's at the bottom so you lose lead. And you catch lots opf oxide and trash in the scoop. Cleaning it off. Just oxides more lead. If I had to do it over again, I'd just buy one that drips out of the bottom. Other than that, it comes with a wide range of useful stuff. It's a pretty decent ollace to start. Especially if you are just making sinkers or something that doesn't matter if it has an imperfect cast. ... show more

So the kits is a good buy and I would recommend it to anyone looking to do some bullet casting. However, I do have a few suggestions to make this a 5 star kit. 1. Put a handle on the back of the furnace to make I easier to empty the it when finished. I've done this to mine once I made sure it worked but everyone doesn't have a welder. 2.furnace will do the job but pretty much has to be maxed out. It would be nice if it had 30 degrees more capability. 3. Add $40 to price of the kit and add a casting thermometer. ... show more

I bought this kit to cast bullets for large caliber (.54-.58") Civil War era rifles. It melts a pot of lead in about 20 minutes and maintains temperatures within a reasonable range. With a little practice I am able to cast good quality bullets. I recommend getting a thermometer so that when you find a temperature that works well with your bullet size & mould, you can recreate that temperature next time. It works beautifully. It's consistent with it's temperatures, and is extremely easy to use. the book that comes with it is a must-have for anybody who is thinking casting their own bullets, and if you want can you mix your own alloys the ingot mold is a great thing to have.

everything was in the box very well organized only used the ingot molds so far that was great ingots came out smooth and clean only i’m using the pot with clean lead not melting wheel weights in it , would be awesome if this kit came with a 2 cavity mold for any caliber
