I admit I was skeptical as I read the description on Amazon. But it was one of those cases where the idea about how it did the job seemed worth the risk. Cutting open a can by cutting from the side of the can, just under the rim, rather than the puncturing the top, almost sounded crazy! But it works! Perfectly! And I truly believe it's much safer. With most can openers, you must stand there holding the lever that controls how long it takes to cut out the lid! With this one, you simply drop it onto the can and BRIEFLY press the red button to get it started. For the next few seconds, you're free to do anything else. Instead of the can spinning around, this entire unit does the spinning around while the can doesn't even move. And while it's doing it's job, your hands and attention can be on something else. IF it takes a bit longer than your previous opener, it will only be a few seconds at most. And those seconds are yours to use as you see fit. When preparing food, every second is valuable! When the job is done, you simply lift the opener and put it away. Then you lift the lid by the rim. It comes off very easily with no mess on your fingers. Just drop the lid in the kitchen garbage can. No sharp edges anywhere! You may want to occasionally rinse off the opener but that's not necessary very often if at all. Certainly not to the extent that "old fashioned" electric openers must be cleaned often. I used to own/operate a childcare center--100+ kids. Making sure openers were clean was a biggie on state Inspectors' list! And that "put it away" part is even better than you think. Unlike most can openers that must take up counter space, not to mention an electric outlet, this one can easily fit in a drawer or cabinet out of sight. Note that it is battery powered--4 AA batteries. No wires to an electric outlet! I haven't had it long enough to have any idea how long the batteries will last. But I don't see that as a concern. I feel that using it for the minute or less it takes to open a can is not likely to be a big drain on the batteries. Simply MARVELOUS! ... show more

This can opener is neat in that its hands free! Only thing I don’t like is that it doesn’t work on all cans! So make sure you have another can opener nearby! But on the cans it works on, it works great!!

I have been struggling trying to find a good can opener. I have developed arthritis in my hands and manual can openers cause me a great deal of pain. I don't have enough room on my counters to house an electric can opener and they are not particularly attractive anyway. I purchased a different battery operated can opener from Amazon about 6 months ago and although it was a little wonky, it worked until it simply died for no reason. I looked at reviews on Amazon for this can opener and others, and reviews from other cooking sites because I simply had to replace the one that died. After reading the Amazon reviews, I had some concerns about this one, but on other sites, this was definitely a top pick, so despite the cost and mixed Amazon reviews, I decided to give it a try. It's larger than the other battery operated one I had previously but better balanced and has a much smoother operation. It fits easily into my kitchen drawer. It does a great job on medium and small cans, but I have not had an opportunity to try it on large or really small (tomato paste) cans. I expect it will work fine with those as well. The previous battery operated can opener I used had a sharp blade that would cut into the label so you had to pick little bits of label out of the contents. I'm so happy this does not do that! It seems to have a really good opening mechanism. Some reviews complained it was too slow. I have not found that at all. Some reviews complained that you had to use a Dremel or something to modify the battery compartment to allow them to connect. I did not find that at all, and the batteries pop in tightly but without trouble. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and grateful for the ease of operation. I hope it will last longer than 6 months, unlike the other. We will see. ... show more

This was a life saver, especially since I have carpal tunnel. So easy to use - you just make sure it lines up with the lip of the can and press the button and it does the rest for you. It has a magnetic hold for the top of the lid that helps for it to rotate without much help from you other than holding it into place without much effort. Easy to clean with a damp cloth. I ordered this can opener three years ago and it’s been amazing until the last few uses. The motor still works but it’s not clicking with the can now. I don’t know what’s normal but I loved this opener so much, in spite of how long it lasted, I’m going to check out their 2.0 model now. I love the ease of use - set it on the can and push a button. It doesn’t auto stop but the sound is different and then a simple click stops it. The hugest plus is that I can’t cut myself on the lids. And I love the colors. ... show more

It’s great for people that have arthritis, I have arthritis and was using a crank can opener and could hardly turn the nob to open a can. This item takes the top off of cans without me having to hold it, just press a button on top once you put it on the can and after it goes around the can you press the button on top to stop it and then lift it off of the can and the top comes off, plus there are no sharp edges on the can.
