This is a review for the Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter by Kindling Cracker. I bought this as a humorous Christmas gift for my son. Once he took off the fancy bow, naturally we had to go play with it straight away. A half hour later and we're back inside with armloads of kindling. The splitter works perfectly and is even better than advertised. I've had fireplaces and wood stoves for my entire life, and figure I've seen every kind of splitter and maul by now. I had expected the Kindling Cracker to be good, but how could it be much of an improvement on what's already out there? Well, surprise, surprise - it's good and better. I couldn't be happier with this thing and here's why: I haven't been able to split kindling for a few years because of a bum shoulder, but today I discovered that with the Kindling Cracker I'm able to split SINGLE HANDED (with my trusty 4# Stanley sledge) all the kindling I'm in the mood for. I can even do it sitting down. This turned out to be a huge surprise gift for me because I never expected that I'd be able to split wood again. My son loves it, too, and the only downside is now we have to take turns. Clean design, bullet-proof, super stable. The round top makes comfortable in the hand to carry. Edit: I just bought an Estwing MRF3LB 3-Pound Sure Strike Fiberglass Drilling Hammer and it works even better than the Stanley for me. If this review was helpful, please click "yes" below. My neighbor has one and I thought why not, it's a game changer, you cannot get hurt using it to split, it's so simple my kids use it. I didn't mount mine to anything, just on the driveway and start splitting with a 9lb hammer, amazing!!!

This device makes the job of splitting wood for kindling faster, easier and safer with some caveats though. I was splitting some red oak and on some pieces the wood would spring (bounce) back up and not split all the way through. I solved the issue by moving the piece to either side so it would not spread as far. I was using a 3 lb sledge and might not have had the issue with a 4 lb sledge. I also found out I need to wear gloves as I got a few splinters while holding the piece to get it started. Overall I am very happy with my purchase.

This is great for making kindling. It is very sharp and does a great job. I bought the one with the larger opening. I'm glad I did because it allows me to put in larger pieces. I mounted it to a large log for stability. I use shorter (10 in or less) pieces that split completely rather than long pieces that open up and may get stuck. I know I will be using this for years to come.

This has got some good weight to it, and is well built. You'll definitely want to attach it to a wooden base of some sort to increase its stability (it has screw holes for this). I haven't had it tip over since adding my wood base. A dead-blow hammer will also increase the efficiency of using this. The bottom of the cutting wedge is about 2" wide, so make sure that you have at least 1" clear around all sides of whatever you put into the top, or you will risk getting it jammed/wedged in. If you understand its limitations, and what it is designed to do, this is an excellent product. I would definitely recommend.
