  • A really solid ball winder
Color: Rosewood Size: Universal (14"Lx9.5"H)
This is a really good ball winder. It worked really well, even with some really slippery silk yarn that I had. It doesn't snag, and it was super easy to stop and fix the yarn cake when the winder skipped. There are some parts of the winder that look like maybe they were from the other wood option, but it honestly looks really unique. I like it. It came mostly assembled, I just had to screw the yarn feeder on, and then place the spool on. My only real complaint is the clamp. It works fine, but if your table has any sort of curve at the edge, it wont clamp flat onto it. It still works and stays put, but I really do think that part could have been better designed. But overall I really like this winder. It's easy to use, quiet, and doesn't have the same issues my old plastic one had. ... show more

  • AMAZING!!
Color: Rosewood (Winder+Swift) Size: Universal (14"Lx9.5"H)
This piece of equipment is absolutely beautiful! I was also impressed with the packaging of my swift and winder. Everything was wrapped with care. As for the items themselves, the craftmanship is amazing and the quality is just brilliant. Its so nice to have something this eye catching as a part of my knitting supplies. I was also very pleased and quite surprised, to have had this ship so quickly! I ordered this set on Christmas, and it was delivered within 7 days! That's amazing! While there are no written directions, of there had been, i wouldnt have given them much mind. I jad these pieces put together with no issue, and didnt have to refer to the video instructions either. The winder also works very, very well! I had no need to hold the yarn to maintain tension. The winder is smooth and easy to use. Overall this was a great purchase, if youre on the fence, just try it! Im so happy that I did! ... show more

  • Not worth the risk, damaged, only does 2.5oz before sliding off
Color: Rosewood Size: Universal (14"Lx9.5"H)
This is a decently heavy product, but poorly designed and made. And ironically, some of the "good" reviews seem to not realize that's not how cakes are supposed to look. On refund request of the defective product, the return shipping was $81. As you can see in the photos, this makes a strange oblong ball, doesn't use the whole spindle and mine had several issues. First, the common direction of spinning (clockwise) knocks the nut off the spinner handle. It is not anti-threaded. The knob also doesn't spin so as you wind, you have to let the knob slip in your hand which is tedious and for fast winding, impossible. (Though this, I could have replaced it with a solid pin on the knob if it was the only problem.) The spiral metal pin to hold the yarn on mine spins around. It is not secure. It addition, after one gentle spin, the wood started shaving off at the screw port for the spindle. Due to the odd spinning shape, it doesn't problperly cake the ball for center pulling and made a painful pink and white spaghetti bowl from my first skein when try to knit hands-on. This is essentially a poorly drilled board with hammered in threads for the parts which causes tons of issues. Given the cost, this many problems is silly enough but despite it being damaged in several places, I can only "get my money back" if I pay return shipping to India... which is more than the cost of this poorly designed winder. I used my cheap plastic one for comparison with a 5oz fully wound ball. I did commercial yarn for this experiment, but as a spinner, weaver, etc. for a decade, I wanted to have a sturdier item for constant winding. This isn't it. There is no way this wouldn't obliterate my handspun. ... show more

  • Very nice winder
Color: Rosewood Size: Universal (14"Lx9.5"H)
The previous reviews spanned great to awful, so I was not sure about this winder. It seems well-made overall. I am not having problems with the handle/crank; it spins freely. The anchor/clamp provided is worthless; I'm using a 2" clamp mounted near the feed side and it would be nice to have that option on the crank side, but there really isn't room on the base. Once I'm sure I like the clamp where it is, I'll drill a small well for the clamp surface; right now I'm using popsicle sticks to prevent cosmetic damage. The winding works well; I wound several balls from a giant one-pound hank for practice. Those required some tensioning ahead of the feed coil but that may have been me learning. I've wound weights from lace-mohair to worsted directly off my swift. The lighter weights seemed to require a bit of additional tension; the sport, dk, and worsted all ran smoothly from swift to ball spindle. There was only the occasional catch if the skein was slightly tangled, and the last few wraps on the swift always caused issues. This may well be my swift though; it is unpredictably temperamental. In any case, once I started wrapping the last few yards by hand, life got easier. I do love the way the cake pulls off and leaves the center-pull end available. The cakes are loose enough not to stretch the yarn much, but not floppy or oval. I did not attempt any heavy worsted or bulky yarns. I suspect they might not catch well in the sawn slots for the cake. This is also somewhat rough-edged, as is the interior of the core. A bit of sanding smoothed it out. It should only touch the first inch or so of yarn anyway. Overall, it's a lovely piece, finished well, and I'm glad I bought something other than a cheap plastic winder. The issues were all pretty minor, the biggest one in my mind being the poor design for the clamp. ... show more

  • Cracked but otherwise perfect
Color: Rosewood Size: Universal (14"Lx9.5"H)
Product was beautiful. Winds an elongated skein that works perfectly. The wood must have been wet when it was made because the base cracked on me this weekend. So sad because it was perfect otherwise. Luckily, the crack does not impede how the ball winder works. It works significantly better than my knitpicks ball winder and I will continue to use this one anytime I have the opportunity. ... show more
