  • Excellent Stabilization, Lightweight and User-Friendly App
As someone who loves capturing moments on my smartphone, I was thrilled to try the Hohem iSteady V3 Gimbal Stabilizer. I’ve used a few stabilizers before, but this one stood out with its unique features like AI tracking, a fill light, and a detachable remote. After using it on several occasions, I’m happy to share my experience. The first thing I noticed was how compact and foldable the gimbal is. It’s lightweight and easy to carry around, making it perfect for on-the-go filming. Setting it up was straightforward, and the Hohem Joy app paired seamlessly with my iPhone. The app itself is user-friendly, with intuitive controls that let me adjust settings and switch modes effortlessly. One feature I particularly enjoyed was the AI tracking. It’s a game-changer for solo creators like me who often shoot without help. The gimbal follows my movements smoothly, whether I'm walking around or gesturing. It felt like having a personal cameraman! The tracking is quite responsive and rarely loses focus, which is impressive. The built-in fill light is another fantastic addition. It’s bright and adjustable, perfect for shooting in low-light conditions. I used it during an evening outing, and the difference in video quality was noticeable. The light added a nice touch, making my videos look more professional without needing extra equipment. The detachable remote is a neat feature as well. It allowed me to control the gimbal from a distance, which was handy when I wanted to set up a shot and then join in without having to rush back to the camera. The remote also has a small tripod built in, which is convenient for steady shots or time-lapses. In terms of stabilization, the Hohem iSteady V3 performed exceptionally well. The 3-axis stabilization smoothed out my footage, even when I was moving quickly or filming in challenging conditions. The motors are quiet and responsive, and the gimbal adapts quickly to different movements, ensuring my videos are shake-free. The battery life is decent; I could use it for several hours on a single charge, which was more than enough for a day of filming. It charges quickly, so I never felt like I had to wait long to get back to shooting. Overall, the Hohem iSteady V3 Gimbal Stabilizer has exceeded my expectations. It’s packed with features that enhance my filming experience, and it’s easy to use, even for someone who isn’t a professional videographer. Whether I’m capturing travel vlogs, family moments, or creative projects, this gimbal has become an essential tool in my kit. If you’re looking for a reliable and versatile smartphone gimbal, I highly recommend giving this one a try. ... show more

  • Smooth Video Content
I am starting to get into doing more video content on Youtube and have hated how amateur looking my videos appear. Using my phone is bad enough but having it be shaky while moving around or capturing different shots and angles added to the "cheap feeling" of my shots. This gimbal - is a really cool solution that has had an immediate effect on the quality of my shots. Camera is very steady now and moving shots i take where i zoom in and out or pan to capture different angles are now buttery smooth. Almost cinematic feeling. If this was only a gimbal i would have been happy with this purchase but this product went above and beyond with some additional features that make video recording a more enjoyable experience. - I has a built in tripod in the body of the gimbal that can be pulled out when needed allowing me to set the camera down when i want to be in the shot. - There is a Built in extension rod in the neck that can be extended allowing me to extend my phone out or up into the air giving me more angle options, and the ability to see over obstacles or capture a downward angle - The gimbal controls detach from the body of the handle allowing me to remotely pan/tilt and control the various gimbal functions when i want to be in the shot - The gimbal includes a built in light to help illuminate myself or the subject i am recording - The gimbal has a secondary camera that watches for gesture input to control and engage the various functions. All in all this is a feature rich, bluetooth enabled, smart gimbal that has really helped up the quality of my video recordings, in a simple and intuitive way, without breaking the bank. ... show more

  • Lacking In Performance and Usability. No Thank You!
Lots of issues identified with this gimbal. Here comes a TRULY IN DEPTH REVIEW! I REALLY was looking forward to getting this and I REALLY wanted to love it. I have a real need for a device like this in my life that works well because I create content, reviews and also do personal filming for the lols and memories. I say this to illustrate that I am not new to gimbals or to filming equipment, cameras, apps and related software, both capture and editing. I really expected to have pulled this out of the box, charge it up, tinker for about 40 minutes and then be able to implement it into my fleet of filming tools seamlessly as another useful tool. That was, SO, NOT The Case! Speaking of “case.” First things first. The phone cradle will not hold a phone with even the slimmest case on it. I am not a rebel that wants to attach their “not paid for in full yet” brand new S24 Ultra on a device that spins it around in 3D space and not have a case on it. Maybe that’s just me but I feel the majority of cell phone users, especially creators that use their phones as a camera option, will have a protective case on the phone. There is simply no way a phone will fit in this cradle with any sort of case on it. The shape of the cradle arms is like a really narrow “V” from the side view and that gap is only big enough just to barely get the phone, all by itself, to fit in the cradle. In addition, the positioning of the phone in that cradle makes the cradle touch the physical “lock/power” button on the side of the phone. Really fun to deal with. {eye roll}. I really wish the cradle was detachable and other options were in the box or that the cradle had adjustable arms to support different thicknesses of phones and not the slim fixed V notch that it has. Not being able to run a case on my phone and use this gimbal at the same time, is a HUGE FAIL for me personally and makes this device go from a possible “everyday option and solution” to being a “once in a while, under the right circumstances” type of option. The fact that the phone doesn’t fit the cradle with a case or cover on the phone would have been enough for me to call it right there and not use the gimbal or to have sent it back. But, WAIT! THERE’S MORE!!! LACK OF DOCUMENTATION: Complete fail. The instructions that come with this one are really…REALLY lacking. I had to call customer support to figure out how some aspects of this worked and what the controls did and I am not new to camera equipment nor is this my first gimbal experience. I could see this being really frustrating for a new user. There is not an owners manual or booklet but instead just a 4 page quick start guide that points arrows at buttons and tells you what the button is assigned to but doesn’t say what the action does when you do it to the button. For example with the Bluetooth….it says to click the wheel 7 times. I was having issues connecting to Bluetooth because I had downloaded the wrong app (more on that later) and I clicked the wheel 7 times and the Bluetooth light went off. So I am thinking I just turned the Bluetooth OFF on the gimbal. I click the wheel 7 times again and the light doesn't come back on or flash or anything. Here I am thinking I broke it or it was defective but upon calling customer service for help I find out that clicking that button RESETS Bluetooth on the gimbal to make it like it has never been connected to a Bluetooth device….like factory reset for just the Bluetooth. It wipes the saved Bluetooth data on the gimbal…it doesn’t turn the Bluetooth on and off. It doesn’t say anything about that in the “quick start guide” and if I didn’t call customer service I would have packed it up, written my review based on that experience and it not working and I would have never known there was nothing wrong with it other than the information I need, as a user, is not properly supplied with the unit. Nor is that info on any of their video tutorials. There are other issues with this gimbal too and this is going to be a long one if you stick around for the entire review. Just a warning….here comes a novel! CUSTOMER SERVICE & TECH SUPPORT: This gets an A+ from me. Let me just say that customer service was pretty great. The first lady got me going in the right direction and cleared up a lot of what the quick start guide should have included. However, there were remaining issues that she could not “fix” and forwarded my call to a tech support rep that called me back and then got on to a video zoom call with me to see how the unit was acting and to troubleshoot it further. During this call I discovered additional information that all end users should be provided in the box and is not there or in any of the tutorial videos. Getting on a video call and handling stuff is great service if you ask me. That representative also noted all of my concerns about the missing information that end users should have and advised that the recorded video call would be sent up to management so they could see the issues and start planning a resolution. I really hope that happens. So, long story short, the service is really good and they are real people who pick up the phone and it was not an infuriating conversation with either representative. They genuinely tried to be helpful and didn’t rush me off the phone with improper info and they understood me when I spoke. SOME LIMITATIONS: This gimbal has “stops” built into it. I can manually use the joystick to adjust past every single stop point that the gimbal stops at in every axis but as soon as I let go of the joystick it flops back to where it wants to be and not where I want it to be or where I just defined it to be at. It stops short of the actual stops. It also goes a little jerky and freaks out if you move your hand too fast in certain ways so an incredible amount of attention must be paid to how one is handling the unit in order for the unit not to start twitching and hopping around and ruin the shot footage that is being taken. Even on the service chats with tech support I was told that this is how it is programmed and this is what is going to do. Also, the gimbal acts very strange and doesn't hold the shot centered properly if it is too close to the subject and I was told that I have to extend the gimbal's arm and hold it at distance to have better performance. To be fair, when I did that, it did start to work better, eliminating SOME of the issues I was having when I was hand holding it at bent arms length without extending the collapsible extension that is built into the gimbal. THE CORRECT APP: Originally I had downloaded the incorrect app also. One titled “Hohem Gimbal” with a blue icon. The first one that comes up when searching on the app store. The iSteady V3 was not part of the “select your gimbal” list and it would not connect via bluetooth. This is how I ended up on the phone with Customer Service. When the rep realized I was using the wrong app she advised that I needed the “orange Hohem joy” app and I went looking for it and accidentally downloaded the big orange icon that says “HOHEM” on it and titled “HOHEM PRO” …..THIS IS NOT the correct app either. The correct app for this gimbal is called HOHEM JOY and is orange also. All of this was very confusing to both myself and the agent helping me as she could not see the errors I was making along the way and had to figure it out from what I was saying during the call. We eventually got the right app installed and connected to Bluetooth and during this process is how I discovered that the 7 taps on the wheel wipes the Bluetooth data from the gimbal and must be done every time I want to use the gimbal with a different phone. (We were using 2 different phones during the troubleshooting to try and get it to connect with either of them to see if maybe the first phone I was using was the problem and not the gimbal. Luckily I had a second phone available to entertain this request from Hohem.) I told you…it’s a novel! Hopefully someone will get some help out of this if they are having any of the issues I had at first. NOW, THE APP ITSELF: OK oK Ok ...I know I have gone on and on but here is where the cookie crumbles even more. The way the gimbal is to be used properly and works with the Hohem Joy App is DIFFERENT than the way the gimbal is to be used and how it works when using the native camera app that came on the phone!!! Again, NOWHERE is this stated in the “quick start guide” or any of the tutorial videos. There are even 2 different gestures to be used for auto tracking depending on if the app is being used or the native camera app. With the Hohem app you DO NOT NEED the “AI fill light tracker” attached to the gimbal, nor should it be on or looking for gesture input. The app itself is all that is needed and the app recognizes the gestures. The “Peace” sign is used in the Hohem app to start tracking while the “OK” gesture is used with the “AI Fill light” attached when using the native camera app. Two different gestures to do the same thing depending on what app is being used to record and also one needs to know to turn off the “AI fill light” from looking for a gesture so they both are not on at the same time while in the Hohem app and working to bounce off each other which causes sporadic and chaotic tracking errors in the gimbal motions. Confused yet? So was I. This is where I told the rep that we ABSOLUTELY NEED BETTER DOCUMENTATION IN THE BOX and that they need to clearly outline a set of instructions for when the gimbal is being used with the Hohem App and a different set of instructions when the gimbal is being used with the native camera app. I also advised that there really is no need to have 2 different gestures that do the same thing. Speaking of gestures…some of the gestures on the unit are 2 handed gestures and the 2 handed gestures are the ones I always NEED to use when I have one hand holding the gimbal. One handed gestures would be WAY better and more useful since….it IS a GIMBAL and it is designed to be HELD! Two handed gestures make no sense. I also was told multiple times during the tech support interaction to set the gimbal on a flat surface. I almost felt like a handheld device only worked properly while planted still on a table and not being held as intended. The gimbal agreed because when it was on a table or stationary placement, it did work a TON better and the tracking was much improved. There is also a third way to to start tracking in the app, by touching the phone screen and dragging, a green box will appear to highlight the object that is to be tracked. When the finger is released the green box remains and the tracking starts immediately. However, if the object is lost it is seldom, if ever, found again for tracking to resume. Once it is red and then lost, it is gone and has to be redrawn with the finger again. None of this is provided in the instructions that come in the box! SIZE LIMITATIONS: Beyond the “stops” that it will not go past even though the space and motion is available in reality it needs to be noted that this is not a 360° rotation on any axis. Once it get to the “stop” it will flip the phone around quickly and reposition it. This results in additional issues like the camera not filming one of the gimbal arms instead of the subject. I have tested this gimbal with both a Samsung NOTE10+ 5G and a S24 Ultra and both are pushing the size boundaries of this tiny gimbal pretty badly. The gimbal can handle the weight of the device, again, without a case installed but the actual size of the devices I used presented issues in relation to proper positioning on the cradle, the lock button being pressed by the cradle when the phone was positioned “correctly,” the phones’ corners and edges being caught up in the arms of the gimbal during use, the subject being framed and held on the left hand side of the shot and the subject being lost and the gimbal pointing in a random direction after a few small movements resulting in filming something random and not what I want the camera aimed at. Some of this can be “worked around” and with many hours of use, nuances in the setup and changing some settings but in the “out of the box” condition it is not user friendly or intuitive at all. There are controls that let me move the gimbal around to adjust the position of the phone but 9 out of 10 times as soon as I let go of the aim control it would bounce back to where I started from and it doesn’t hold where I adjusted it to. Very frustrating to use, especially when there is NO DOCUMENTATION to fall back on to go looking for answers or to tell me EXACTLY how the gimbal is supposed to work or the expected behaviors of the gimbal. I have spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME just trying to figure out this device and to this day have not once been able to produce a clip without a gimbal error in it that is super obvious to the viewer of the clip. This is not a gimbal that I would recommend to beginners or as a first gimbal for someone. It is not intuitive or user friendly and SEVERELY Lacks Documentation and Instructions. This is also not a gimbal that I would recommend to anyone with a case on their phone or for use when in motion. The small size of the gimbal makes it hard to use with the size of today’s smartphones and the size of a S24 Ultra is pushing it as far as usability. The only thing this gimbal seems to be good for, even according to service and support, is if it is STATIONARY on a flat surface or tripod and it is being used for tracking while filming alone. That is the way this is meant to be used as far as the experience I have had with it and the conversation with support. I consider it to be a “follow me” gimbal with extras but the extras don't work and are not good. Even that use method does have limitations and the lack of instructions and information about how to use the “AI fill light” sensor the right way and in the correct setup and only to use that sensor when using the native camera app and not in combination with the Hohem Joy App and that the sensor should be removed or turned off when the Joy app is being used…..NONE of that is information is included in the box. Even nuances like how to draw a green box around the subject to be tracked in the app or the fact that the “Peace” gesture is what starts the tracking when in the Hohem app but the “OK” gesture is what does the same action when using the sensor and the native camera app. Shutter controls and other features only work with the Hohem App and not the native camera. The app is quirky and it took a couple of tries to get it to save my settings and it took over an hour for the app to display the videos I was filming with the app in its display list. It kept saving videos and the list was empty. I checked all over my phone looking for those videos and had no idea where they were being saved or even if they were actually being saved at all. Then all of sudden after time passed, I looked in the app’s content list, after doing that previously about 50 times and there they all were, displayed like I expected them to be the first time I went into that part of the app. Quirky. The camera controls are “off” compared to the native camera. White balances, stops and other settings when set at the same numbers on each app both look different on the screen and they record differently. So I am unsure why that is happening. Meaning I have to figure out all the settings differences on each app and memorize that so I can have footage that matches if I decide to record a portion of a project with each option. Bottom line is this is a very convoluted and confusing gimbal that has to be used in very specific ways in order for it to function (somewhat) the way it should. It is built and packaged really nice and all that but all that means nothing if the device doesn’t have clear DETAILED instructions, is not intuitive and doesn’t function unless it is set up in a specific way only. I have spent too much time trying to figure it out and have not been able to use it to film anything that is worthy of publishing and therefore I would not recommend this one. I cannot even comment on features like the removable remote, battery life, motor speed and response, etc. because I have not been able to get it to function like I would expect a gimbal to function. I’ve wasted enough time and energy trying to figure this out, way more than I should have done. Therefore this is not a useful addition to my filming toolkit and I would not order it again, nor would I recommend it. I did, REALLY want to like this one and I am truly disappointed in its overall performance and usability as expected. It does really have potential and the ideas are there but the implementation is lacking all over the place. This one is more of a “3 strikes and you're out” kind of deal for me instead of a “home run hit off the 3rd pitch.” ... show more
