  • Better than a sit pad!
Color: Black
The older I get the less I was liking my sit pad for backpacking, so I began entertaining the idea of a lightweight chair - which I could also use for motorcycle, sea kayak, and e-bike camping... I had been hesitant to drop this kind of cash though, and have always avoided the kitchy-trendy gear. However, on a recent backpack trip a friend had a Helinox Chair (One or Zero I believe), and another buddy had the REI branded chair of similar design. So I tested them both. Of the two, the Helinox chair felt more sturdy and secure, but both had the pointy legs that dug into the ground no matter what the weight of the user. So in my continued research I came across this Ground Chair and was immediately attracted to the leg/foot design. It also weighed a bit less than the Chair One, and packed down a hair smaller than both the One and Zero chairs. And for the cash savings over the gram savings vs. the Zero Chair...well, here we are! I was surprised at the quality of the seat material and how well it was sewn together, with particular attention paid to the reinforcement of the corner pockets (where the chair frame is inserted). Very impressive! I was also very pleased with the sturdiness of the frame tubing and the feet. The quality of these components is superior to that of other similar designed off branded chairs that I've seen. Which makes me feel like my money was well spent here. I'm about 5' 5" and feel very secure in this chair. No wobble side to side at all. And it is very easy to get in and out of - I just simply grasp the back of the chair to steady myself on the way down. Likewise, gripping the chair back to push myself up and out keeps the chair from tipping forward. Perfect! The semi reclined position is very comfortable whether sitting with knees up or legs outstretched. And the one thing I noticed about sitting with my legs outstretched is that the height of the chair is just right to prevent strain behind the knees! I can also sit upright in the chair for cooking or eating by semi folding my legs under. The height of the chair is perfect so that I can do this without any portion of my legs touching the dirt. The chair, with storage sack, weighs in at exactly 23 ounces as advertised. I'm sure I'll replace the included rubber band with a velcro strap later on, but the chair folds n' rolls up easily to fit back into the storage sack (sack weighs .7 oz on its own). And the whole thing fits perfectly in one of my backpack's side stretch pockets, and also fits easily in my motorcycle's saddlebags. So, goodbye old sit pad! There's a new sheriff in town! ... show more

  • Your back will love you
Color: Coyote Tan
I have been a minimalist for as long as I can remember, cutting weight for backpacking, back country hunting, and camping. Now that I am a little older I decided to embrace more of the comfort level. So here is an honest, straight forward review of this chair from a regular guy. First, the chair is surprisingly solid for the weight. It does sit low. Your butt is about 6 inches off the ground which I personally like. I use this chair for everything. Kids ball games, turkey hunting, glassing, camping, you name it. Best camping investment I have made in a minute. Especially if your going to spend time in one place. It is not good in snow, sits to low and falls right through. I am sure you could put a pad under it and make it work. It makes glassing for hours enjoyable and comfortable. If you are considering a chair, my vote is definitely a yes. Especially if you are spending any length of time in a small area and not moving much. ... show more

  • Great hiking chair
Color: Black
I took this hiking this past weekend. I am reviewing this as a hiking/camping chair not a travel chair for concerts or the beach or something of that nature although it would be good for that. It would also make a great kids video game chair if you have way too much money and are fairly irresponsible with it. Also, If you are an ounce counter, this review is not for you. If you try to balance weight and comfort, keep reading. The poles are sturdier than tent poles. They are a little wider and a little thicker and they are all corded together which seems like a mess at first. What I started doing was taking them out and grabbing one pole and shaking it a little bit and most of them just pop into place where they need to be. You can have this chair up in less than 30 seconds. As other reviewers noted, it does sit low to the ground. I thought this was a feature not a detractor. I was able to stretch my legs out and relax which was great. It does make it a little harder to get in and out of but once you are there you don't want to get out of it anyway. If mobility is an issue for you though, this chair might not be the best choice for you but, you probably are also not hiking 15 miles into the backwoods anyway. The chair is also sturdy feeling and I was able to rock in it a little bit. Other chairs like this that I have sat in feel like they are going to fall over even on the hardest of ground. This chair is fine even on soft sand and slight inclines or declines. So why four stars instead of five? Two things: 1. I have wide shoulders. The upper poles slide into my armpits when I sit in the chair regularly. It is not overly uncomfortable and easily fixed by slightly adjusting my position but, it is a little annoying. Most people are not going to have this problem. My girlfriend thinks it is great. Even if they made a wider one, I would pick this for the weight savings. 2. No head rest. This would make the chair perfect (5 stars). Although, I might die of starvation in the forest if it did have a headrest. A camp pillow and a tree readily fix this non-issue. So in summary, this is the lightest, sturdiest, most terrain versatile, comfortable hiking chair on the market right at the moment. It has a good balance of features and weight. After a long day of hiking, you wont be regretting that you carried this with you. ... show more
