Frequently asked questions

The Hayward PoolVac XL operates by utilizing your pool's existing filtration system. It gets connected to the skimmer or suction port, and as the pump runs, it creates suction that allows the PoolVac XL to move across the pool's floor and walls, vacuuming debris into your pool's filtration system. Its unique wing and skirt design enhance its suction capability and allow for thorough pool coverage.

The Hayward PoolVac XL is ideally designed for in-ground gunite pools. While it is optimized for gunite surfaces, its performance on other pool surfaces like vinyl or fiberglass may vary and is not officially recommended by the manufacturer for non-gunite pools.

The Hayward PoolVac XL is designed to work with your pool's existing pump and filtration system, so no additional equipment is necessary for its operation. However, for optimal performance, your pool's pump and filtration system should be in good working order and properly sized for your pool's volume.

Maintaining and cleaning the PoolVac XL involves occasionally checking the suction path for debris and ensuring the wings and shoes are in good condition. It's also important to regularly inspect the hose for any signs of wear or damage and to clean the filter system to maintain proper suction. Always disconnect the PoolVac XL from the pool's suction port and turn off the pool pump before performing any maintenance.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Hayward pool vacuum comes highly recommended by users for its durability, effectiveness, and ease of use. Suitable for different pool types and sizes, it operates without electrical power, relying on the pool's suction line. Maneuverability around obstacles and along walls ensures thorough cleaning, while its simple design limits maintenance headaches. However, concerns about longevity and functionality after a period of use have been mentioned.

Pros

  • 🌟 Highly effective at cleaning various pool types and sizes
  • 🔄 Excellent maneuverability, managing walls and avoiding obstacles efficiently
  • 🛠️ Low maintenance thanks to a straightforward, electrical-free design
  • 🕒 Long-lasting with reports of units operating well over a decade
  • 📦 Comes with ample tubing and is described as a great value compared to robotic cleaners

Cons

  • 🌱 Can get hung up on large debris or deep creases in the pool liner
  • ⏰ May show a significant decrease in performance or stop working around the two-year mark
  • 🔧 Common issues with certain parts leading to additional investment in replacements
  • 📉 Quality and durability concerns despite the initially high performance

Should I Buy It?

If you value simplicity, durability, and effective pool cleaning over the high-tech gimmicks of robotic cleaners, the Hayward pool vacuum could be a fit for you. However, be prepared for potential maintenance or replacement after a few years of service. Weighing its upfront cost against the longevity and effectiveness reported by many, it presents as a solid investment for diligent pool maintenance.

  • still one of the best units for cleaning pools
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
I have used these units for cleaning pool for over 25 years. These are very well made and work perfect. This is my second one after all these years. They are easy to rebuild and parts a available online or at Tiffany's Pool Supply. Oh I mean Leslies Pool supply where everything costs twice as much as it should. ... show more

  • Simple, inexpensive, and it WORKS!
Style: Vinyl (W32025ADV)
First, about my pool. It's large -- 16 x 32 -- but shallow, only 5.5 feet from end to end. There's no "deep end" where junk can accumulate. The whole bottom needs cleaning. I ordered a "robot" electrical cleaner with a "programmed" electronic control., for over $1000. It didn't clean the whole bottom. It performed its routine, decided it was done, then turned itself off. I sent it back to the manufacturer twice, but they couldn't make it work. It's now awaiting recycling. The "robot" cleaner also needed supervision. I had to haul it out of the water and clean the basket, which was a nuisance. And I had to disconnect the electrical controller and move it under cover before running the lawn sprinkler, or when rain was forecast. The Hayward is a blessedly simple, straightforward device. It doesn't need electricity; when it's connected and the pool pump is running, IT'S running. It has no basket; the trash goes into the pump basket or the sand filter. It runs around in a random pattern that, it time, will clean the entire bottom of any pool. And it needs no supervision. It's idiot-proof. Some caveats. Make sure all the hose sections are clicked firmly into place. The cleaner will get hung up on large debris, like twigs, and deep creases in the liner. Take care of these before using. Suction is important. The suction gauge provided is helpful, but I discovered I don't need it. My pool has three drains; the bottom, the skimmer, and the vacuum port. I connect the cleaner to the vacuum port and close the other two drains. Suction is too high; it clings to the bottom. I open one of the other ports, and the cleaner moves, but slowly. I partially close the other port, a little at a time, until the cleaner is bopping merrily across the bottom at about one foot per second. Then I forget about it. There's no real reason to ever take it out of the pool; that's its element. Just cut the suction and move it out of the way. I love this gadget. I regret that it took me so much time, and so much money, to find it. ... show more

  • Worth the money.
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
UPDATE:Yesterday when cleaning pool I noticed I didn't have the vacuum hose correctly in the skimmer filter and adjusted it...and now it does CLIMB OUT OF THE POOL! YAHOOOOO!! WORKS LIKE A CHARM 💥 I’m giving 5 stars because it was easy to set up out of the box and place in pool, where it immediately went to work. I was skeptical at first if it would work efficiently because it almost didn’t pass the suction test. It was registering to low. I placed it in the shallow end, and it started right up and started working. Mine may not climb out of the pool, but it still goes up the wall about 80% and once in deep end, it has enough suction and power to come back up to the shallow end to clean. Sometimes it appears to get stuck around the stairs, but always works it’s way out of it, and keeps going. I’ve never had to readjust the vacuum to free it from being stuck. I’m really happy I was finally able to afford it, because it’s worth the money. I only wished that it came with a purchasable extended warranty. ... show more

  • Stopped working after about 6 months. 1y warranty useless so far since they can't fix it.
Style: Gunite (W32025ADC)
Stopped working at around 6 months -- took into authorized repair shop. Now on my third return to fix vacuum because shop can't properly test that its fixed. Will update when I hear more but looks like $400 for this vacuum that needs to be replaced after 6 months. Update, month 8. Vacuum in shop for 2 months essentially. The shop repaired one part, didn't work, I brought back, repaired another part, didn't work, I brought back. Third repair, they told me they replaced the gear box and this time that worked. The vacuum has been out of commission for over 2 months while I waited for the shop to get parts for repair. Basically the warranty is good for getting a "free" repair during the warranty period, whether the repair works or not, just keep bringing it back until they either get it working or you run out of the 1 year warranty period. Its many hours out of my time to get this fixed. That's a lot to ask for a $400 plastic vacuum. I expected at least a few good years out of it. Third repair didn't last either. The vacuum moved sluggishly for a few hours then stopped moving at all. Again. Vacuum has been out of commission for 3 months at this point. Seeking refund from Hayward through warranty claim case. ... show more
