  • Meh!
First, I bought my unit directly from Grizzly and not Amazon! I've had 3 or 4 years and you can spend your money on units equal to this for less money. Does it operate OK? Yes-no issues as others have reported! Why then my low rating? This unit requires specially sized filters you can only buy from Grizzly, at an exorbitant price!!!! I have yet to replace the inner filter, but have washed it once or twice and have vacuumed it even more. I replaced the inner filter several times with filters purchased from Grizzly, but have tired of that! I have started purchasing 15" X 20" filters and cutting them to fit. If the unit took a standard sized filter, and if the initial cost was $50 to $100 less, this would be a solid 4-star. As it is priced, spend your money on a Jet unit, that moves the same volume of air and takes off the shelf filters (cheap!). ... show more

  • Yours isn't working now? READ THIS!
I bought one of these maybe 5 years ago when I started my woodworking business. Like many other people, the fan on my wasn't properly balanced. I don't remember how I remedied that but I did get it balanced. Not too long after I installed the unit, it stopped working. I had Grizzly send me a new circuit board which fixed the problem. Later, I discovered that there was a blob of hot melt glue on one pin of one of the connectors on the old board. I think that might have been the problem but put the new board in anyway. My main reason for writing this review is because I have a potential fix if your unit has stopped working! Mine just died and now it's running again. I traced the problem to a bad 2 watt resistor. I don't have access to the board right now so I can't tell you the number of the component but it's the biggest resistor on the board, labeled as 47 ohms, next to the big black box of a capacitor. The actual installed resistor, according to its color code, is 20 ohms, but I'm replacing it with a 47 ohm since that's what it says on the board. The replacement will be a 5 watt unit, just to be safe so it doesn't blow again. Until it shows up, I'm using two 15 ohm 10-watt resistors in series to make it work. Also, the common pin on the motor connector was pretty badly burned and I can't find a replacement connector despite quite a lot of Digi-Key-ing, so I desoldered the connector and pigtailed a new Molex connector on with wires. I'm also going to replace the triac for the high speed winding with a beefier one and upgrade its heat sink, as there was some heat-induced discoloration on the circuit board around it. So, long story short, if your unit isn't working and you know the motor is good, it's highly likely that the circuit board has a problem, but you can't get replacement units any more, so you'll need to fix it. I believe that the aforementioned bad resistor is what powers all of the control circuitry, hence it being a 2 watt unit (all of the others are the usual 1/4 watt type), so I would bet that yours is also bad. Having touched the triacs that feed power to the motor while it was running, I can tell that Grizzly cheaped out on their thermal management, as they get pretty hot but have small heat sinks and poor circulation (the enclosure for the circuit board is a small sealed metal box). So if you're handy with a soldering iron, replace that resistor and at least upgrade the cooling on the triacs, especially the one for the high speed setting since it handles the most current. You could also maybe replace the triacs with relays, but from what I can tell, the triggering voltage is less than a volt, so that might be difficult. ... show more

  • No Quality Control
Looks like Grizzly still hasn't fixed their manufacturing issues with the out of round squirrel cage wheels as of Jan. 2015. The box arrived in good shape with no damage that I could see so I unboxed my unit and removed the styrofoam shipping block and plugged it in. I turned the unit on low speed and you could see how much the fan was moving. On the 2 higher speeds, it was on the verge of self destruction. I removed the fan and motor assembly just to make sure I didn't have a bent motor shaft or anything else weird. What I found was the radius of the fan varied between 5 1/16" to 5 1/4". More than 3/16" out of round over the radius! For something spinning at 1100 rpm (spec sheet high speed), this is way out of tolerance. I think what really upset me the most was the fact that no person could have turned this thing on and said that it was good to go before shipping it out. Really disappointed with the quality control. I own several other grizzly machines, and like other reviewers, this might have ruined their reputation for me. I would think that this was a fluke, but looking at other reviews, it seems that grizzly has not taken the time to address manufacturing issues that have been known for several years. One positive, and the only reason I'm not giving it 1 star. The grizzly customer service reps that I spoke with were very courteous, and grizzly is shipping me a new fan. I will update the review if I get a well made fan to install so that I can actually see what I bought this unit to do, clean the air. ... show more

  • Handle your issues w it immediately green filter or better is key
Same as many others here. I habey entire shop outfitted w $35k + grizzly machines and love em all, except the two of these bad boys. One has been broken for a year and I've had two mechanically inclined friends look at it to no avail. I have no idea how to fix it. Currently it is where's kids put their shoes in my mudroom. The other one doesn't great though and the green micron filter is crucial in my opinion otherwise just a loud fan w a little muffler filter in comparison to the side and power ... show more
