  • Amazing
Size: 18" (2.0Ah) 1.8KW Motor
I can't say enough about this. It's an amazing saw. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. I've had Husqvarna, Craftsman and several other gas saws. This is soooooo much better. I never have to deal with stalls, gas/oil mixtures, it shuts off between cuts, it's quieter. I absolutely love it. I bought extra batteries for longer run times. They charge in about 20 minutes so I can swap around easily if there's power nearby. I've downed and cut up 16" diameter trees, cuts through limbs like butter. Most of the time I run a 14" bar and chain. That's long enough for most of what I do, lighter and easier to wield. I don't know if I'd want to deal with recharging if I was an arborist for a living, away from a power source, but for general home use, this thing is nothing short of life-changing. I used to dread having to get my saw out, wrestle with starting, fueling, maintaining and stabilizing the right mix, etc. I leave this on the back porch and grab it whenever I go out for firewood. Because I don't have to use gas/oil, I can throw it in the cab of the truck any time and not worry about fumes or spillage. Starts and runs every time. It's taken chain saw use from frustrating to fun. My one hesitation is that I haven't used it in the summer yet. I have a little 20v Black and Decker that heats ups and shuts down quickly in anything but the coldest weather. This 80V Greenworks has never shut down on me and I've seen reviews that says it doesn't have overheating issues but I'll test that for myself over the hot southern NC summer. I also bought the Leaf Blower (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CLSDL517) so now I have two chargers. The leaf blower is also great. I'm recommending both to family and friends. ... show more

  • This saw is a workhorse!!
Size: 18" (2.0Ah) 1.8KW Motor
Update 12/26/20 This saw has worked well all year. Not sure why people have problems with chain coming off the bar, but this seems to happen about the same as with all the gas saws I have owned. The battery does lose life after many recharges so I have replaced one battery I use with the saw. You definitely need two batteries if you plan to do more than 30 minutes of cutting. Still I would never go back to hot, noisy, smelly gas chainsaws. I love this saw. I have used it for 9 months and have cut more trees than I can count. It cuts just as well as my gas powered saws and has a maybe unintended safety feature I really like. When the saw encounters a problem and senses an overcurrent - itsimply shuts down. A gas saw keeps going until it mechanically trips the kickbar or hits something. I don’t know if they intended this to be a safety feature but this is so much more comfortable to use than my gas saws that I will never go back. Other reviewers mentioned chains falling off but I find this is no worse than any of the high end gas saws I have. Its a lot quieter than a gas saw and you don’t have hot exhaust to deal with. Battery life is fine but having a spare battery charging will keep you going most of the day. ... show more

  • Works pretty good
Size: 18" (2.0Ah) 1.8KW Motor
This is a two-part review. The saw works well. It's easy to operate. It's a little heavier than you might like. Biggest issue is battery life. A 2 AH battery only lasts about 30-40 minutes in my string trimmer or an hour or so in this as it isn't run continuously. You have to wait a while for the battery to cool down before it will recharge. Batteries are expensive. THE PROBLEM however IS THAT I DIDN"T RECEIVE A NEW TOOL. THE BOX WAS INSIDE ANOTHER BOX MORE THAN TWICE AS LARGE WITH NO PACKING WHATSOEVER THE GREENWORKS CHAINSAW BOX WAS SMASHED IT HAD OBVIOUSLY BEEN OPENED THE BAGS INSIDE HAD BEEN OPENED THE WRENCH WAS MISSING SAW WAS SLIGHTLY USED ETC. • Death of the small gas chainsaw?
Size: 18" (2.0Ah) 1.8KW Motor
I've used nothing but Stihl, Husky and Echo saws for decades and finally decided it was time to try one of the new electrics. After suffering sticker shock upon seeing the prices of both Stihl and Husky electrics, I sort of gave up on the idea. That is, until I started reading all the positive reviews of this 80V Greenworks and figured I'd give it a try. I expected some sort of wimpy slow-cutting saw that would drain the battery after 10 or 15 minutes of cutting thin branches, but the power, cutting speed and battery life really impressed the heck out of me. I tested the Greenworks on a variety of hardwood limb sizes and found it to cut almost as fast as a 14" limbing chainsaw. I ran the saw about a half-hour and still had a full bar of charge (out of 3 bars) remaining. The next day I switched from the stock safety chain it came with to an OREGON 91VXL062G 62 Drive Link Long Top Plate 3/8-Inch Low Profile Chain, and the cutting speed was even faster This replacement Oregon chain is not a full safety chain (like the original that came with the saw) but there was no noticeable kickback using it. As long as I didn't nose dive into a thick stump - something you shouldn't do anyway with such non-safety chain - it just cut faster and didn't kick. I cut down, limbed and sectioned a dead 35' beechnut that had a base diameter of over 12". I did that on a single battery charge and still had some juice left over when I finished. The benefits of using a battery operated chainsaw are: ~No more pull-starts ~No plugs to replace ~No failure to start due to old gas, a fouled plug or flooding ~No loud noise (well, there's some but nothing like a fully revving gas saw) and neighbor complaints ~No more spilled gasoline ~No more mixing 50:1 ~No more paying for gasoline (I use high octane for saws and it ain't cheap) ~No more breathing in stinky and harmful exhaust fumes ~No more burns when changing out a chain ~Extra safety mechanisms including a traditional chain brake, an interlocking trigger, and the idle saw will shut itself off automatically after about 15-seconds. Additionally, an electric stops moving as soon as the trigger is released - unlike most gas chainsaws. ~Another safety feature; no more dieselling (the continuation of ignition even after the switch is off) due to incorrect carburetor adjustment, bad gas mix or hot spots on a plug. I actually have a 20-stitch scar on my leg from this happening to me with a saw I had turned off. ~No more carbon buildup on the head ~No more excessive vibration that really can tire out your hands and arms ~No more emptying and running out gas in the saw when storing for the season. ~A fraction of the cost of an equivalent Husky or Stihl electric - and with a better (2-year) warranty. I also think it cuts faster than those 2 saws. ~Automatic overload protection. The saw will turn itself off if you push it too much. I saw this in videos but when I used it in thick wood, the saw never overloaded. Just don't push it too much, which is good advice for a gas saw too. However, it just requires pressing the on switch to resume cutting. Of course nothing's perfect, so here's some downsides: ~The saw with it's battery installed isn't exactly a lightweight - but then again it cuts as fast as an equivalent midweight gas saw. ~The battery doesn't last very long in use, so you really need 2 or more of these expensive things with you (about $150 each). I figure to get about an hour of cutting with 2 batteries. The Greenworks quick-charger doesn't take long to recharge a battery, but you can't do that in the field. ~The safety electric shut off kicks in a bit too quickly - at around 15-seconds of idle time. That means you have to press the electric start switch to turn it on before resuming cutting. Just a slight PITA. I have already called Greenworks and asked them if it would be possible to increase this time to 30 or even 45-seconds on future models, so that you can swing the saw from limb to limb without having it turn off unexpectedly. I figure the trigger interlock switch and chain brake are enough for safety. ~It is an electric, and an 80V battery is nothing to disregard. So, don't use it to cut holes in a frozen lake the next time you go ice fishing. Water and electricity are just a bad combination. ~If you fill the bar oil tank up and park the saw, it will slowly bleed oil. The fix to this is to simply store the saw on its side with the bar oil port facing up. It's awkward, but it stops the oil from leaking. My expectation for this battery-electric saw is that it spells the demise of the small and medium chainsaw - for most uses and users. No, you can't use a battery saw on a giant redwood (at least not yet), and all day cutting is really not practical unless you have a nearby charging station. But. for arborist work and chainsawing around the home, this saw can't be beat. ... show more
