Without it, you're limited to pre-set times and speeds in the free workouts. -The remote control doesn't come with a battery, and the required battery size isn't specified. For the price this is a great little treadmill. I placed it under my standing desk and I walk while working at my computer. Takes a bit of getting used to it at first. It’s not good for running. It doesn’t have enough torque really for running and also the belt is not wide enough. But for walking slow while working it is a great value. I use it at 1.2 - 1.4 mph which is enough to get a bit sweaty after about an hour yet slow enough that I can still concentrate on my work while walking same type at my computer.
