Description

Legendary Kurt Cobain has influenced the music culture for over three decades. He created the Jag-Stang as a beautiful combination of his favorite Fender instruments; the Jaguar and the Mustang. Featuring vintage- style pickups and custom humbucking bridge pickups, the Jag-Stang allows players to recreate Kurt Cobain’s famous tone found on Nirvana records. With a switch for each pickup, the Jag-Stang lets players dial in up to four unique combinations to create the perfect sound for stage performances or recording. The shorter scale length makes playing easier with a smaller distance between frets. From the Manufacturer Few artists in music history can be credited with changing the industry nearly overnight and continuing to influence music culture three decades after the height of their popularity. Kurt Cobain and his bandmates in Nirvana appeared on the scene in the early ‘90s as generational talents who combined raucous, heavy tones, punk-infused energy and melodic hooks to create a sound that quickly attracted millions of fans and established grunge and alternative rock as a genre with legitimate mainstream appeal. Although Kurt was seen playing a variety of Fender guitars over the years, his Fender Jaguar® and Mustang® remain the most iconic due to their use on the “Nevermind” tour and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video. Kurt designed the Jag-Stang® to combine his favorite elements of both instruments and brought it to life with help from the Fender Custom Shop in 1993. Commemorating the 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s seminal record “Nevermind,” this limited-edition Jag-Stang comes equipped with the same features that made it Kurt’s ideal instrument. The alder body delivers a punchy tone perfect for big power chords, the 24” short-scale reduces string tension for easier playing, and the 7.25” radius rosewood fingerboard with maple neck has a comfortable feel that won’t fatigue your hands when chording. The vintage-style single-coil and custom humbucking pickups are perfect for recreating Kurt’s classic tones, while the Mustang slider switches provide the flexibility to dial in four distinct settings for a variety of in or out-of- phase tones.

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The reviews offer a mixed perspective on the guitar, with several users praising its sound and playability after setup adjustments, while others criticize its quality control and construction issues. Pros

  • 🎸 Great sound quality, particularly for fans of Nirvana
  • 👌 Comfortable playability for players with smaller hands
  • 🎁 Includes a gig bag for easy transportation
  • 🔧 Adjustable setup for personalized action and playability

Cons

  • ❗ Quality control issues, including ungrounded volume control and tuner stability
  • 🛠 Requires setup and potential modifications out of the box
  • 💸 Some find it overpriced for the quality and features offered
  • 🎸 Loose tremolo bar and action adjustments needed for optimal play

Should I Buy It?

If you're a fan of its unique sound, especially for playing Nirvana covers, and don't mind potentially needing to make adjustments or repairs, this guitar could be a good addition. However, considering the price point and reported quality control issues, it's worth weighing whether the charm and sound of the guitar outweigh the possible need for initial setup and tweaks. Shoppers looking for a guitar that's ready to play straight out of the box might want to consider other options.

  • Nifty Guitar ... you get what you paid for
Color: Fiesta Red
I got the red Jagstang. The color is closer to Texas Longhorn Burnt Orange than it is Torino Red. It comes with a nice Fender gig bag and is playable and nicely set up right out of the box. The only cons are that (1) the tremolo bar will just fall right out of the guitar if you lean forward; REAL loose in other words and taking the pickups out of parallel seems to kill a portion of the signal, Other than that, it has a great sound in any other pickup configuration, and messing with the tremolo does not seem to adversely affect the tuning ... at least so long as you aren't dive-bombing with it. Wonderful neck ... easy to play for small hands like mine. ... show more

  • Amazing guitar sounds great.

  • Not for me
Color: Sonic Blue
This guitar is trash. It would probably have been a decent guitar if not for the garbage tremolo system. You have to thread the strings from the pickup side, then wrap around and go through the standard way. My guitar came without a whammy bar, so I had to contact fender for a replacement. Waited a week and they didn't even respond so whatever. 1300 dollars for this guitar is insanity and you are obviously only paying for the name Jagstang, Fender, and Kurt Cobain. Made in Mexico, without a hardshell case, this a guitar is a ripoff. DONT BUY UNLESS YOU JUST WANT A NOVELTY GUITAR ... show more

  • Modded it’s great
Color: Sonic Blue
I don’t want to even get into the Nirvana side of this. I like Nirvana but not a fanboy. It does play Nirvana covers creepishly well out of the box. That being said, I modified mine to get it closer to my tone. I installed in a noiseless pickup in the neck, Tropical fish tone capacitor instead of the factory installed ceramic, and an orange drop treble bleed cap. If that means nothing to you, fine. That’s just what I did to get it to my liking. Playability wise it has a super thin neck. I have a jazzmaster, mustang, and Jaguar, and this thing is super thin. Longer fingered players should know this isn’t a go to for chord shaping. If yo have limited mobility in your fingers or shorter fingers this will be a great guitar. I mainly use it for solos or precision plucking. That being said, the neck is a really refreshing change. The frets are dressed well and a It is SUPER easy to play right out of the box. All in all, for $1300-$1350 it’s kind of expensive for an “every day guitar” I purchased mine on sale for about 40% off. So keep an eye out for sales. If you want something different and just can’t turn your eyes away from that crazy shape, get it. I needed to play mine and mod it to get it to where I love it, but I ended up loving it. It grew on me more and more. I played my Jaguar most in my gigging days and this is a welcomed short scale if you are used to the Jag. If you are used to the thicker 9.5 radius neck on a mustang you might wanna stick to your mustang. I hope this helps! Cheers ... show more

  • So many problems
Color: Sonic Blue
So I've wanted a Jagstang for years, but never came across one in person. When I saw the sale for Prime Day I pulled the trigger. Then the saga began. Everything looked good when I took it out of the box. The action was crazy high, but a simple fix, or so it seemed. I lowered the bridge, that took the action down slightly, so I looked at the neck, and it needed a truss rod adjustment. Easy enough, I loosen the strings, and the tuners start flopping around. So just tighten the screws, nope. All of the tuner screw holes were too wide, the screws wouldn't tighten.. I decide to ignore that and tweak the truss rod, and the neck is straight. Its about this time I start hearing a clunk every time I pickup the guitar. So off to Youtube, I recommend you search: Puisheen Jagstang. So next day I decide to tear it down. First the tremolo. The springs were not attached, they were the clunking I heard. Fixed that and took the neck off. I took off all the tuners, put in a piece of toothpick and some wood glue in each hole, that fixed the tuners. The nut was mostly okay, only the A string slot was off. Most of the frets had burrs, so I filed those. The fretboard edges were combination of sharp or bumpy, I rolled those to at least take the edge off. The fretboard itself isn't particularly smooth. Next I oiled the fretboard, and noticed some nice sized gouges in the fretboard at 17. I also replaced the string tree with a Graphtech. The tree that came on the guitar had no spacer, so it was putting a lot of stress on the strings. Final thing was a shim in the neck pocket. I strung it up, and adjusted the bridge. The action came out perfect. The tremolo needed a couple of drops of oil, and it stays in tune much better. I have to say I was very disappointed in the guitar I received, even for the discounted price all these problems were really unacceptable. My $80 Glarry came setup much much better. If you buy one plan on doing a lot of work, or on paying someone to set it up. With all the work done its a nice guitar, if I had it to do over again I would have looked it over more carefully and exchanged it.. ... show more

  • Poor Quality Control
Color: Sonic Blue
This guitar feels nice in my hands and I enjoy the small radius. However, I noticed that the volume control was functioning abnormally. When the knob was turned all the way down, the guitar was still making a significant amount of sound. I removed the metal control panel and saw that the volume control was not grounded. The ground lug on the volume control looked like no attempt had been made to ground it. This guitar was essentially not completely manufactured. This is not a difficult repair, but it's ridiculous that this instrument left the factory like this. If I hadn't purchased this on sale, I would have returned it immediately. But the sale price return value would not be enough to replace the guitar. Amazon did not offer to replace it with another guitar. There was also a small chip in the clear coat on the front of the body. ... show more
