Description

Foot pain isn't just pain—it's a symptom of serious problems that will only get worse if you ignore it. One in four women in the United States is suffering from debilitating foot pain, which can affect the function of other body parts, from knees and hips to the pelvis and spine. But foot pain - and the underlying problems it reveals - can be eliminated. Every Woman's Guide to Foot Pain Relief will show you how to not only prevent pain but how fix your feet and halt damage to the rest of your body. Through the scientific approach of biomechanics, which looks at the gravity, friction and pressure of our bodies, expert Katy Bowman offers an innovative set of exercises; her easy-to- follow program will help you to eliminate unnecessary foot and lower-leg pain. Bowman, a science advisory member for Earth Footwear, also walks you through the shoes you should (and should not) be wearing at different life stages—without sacrificing fashion. Every Woman's Guide to Foot Pain Relief will teach you how a healthy foot works optimally and put you on the road to prevention and recovery. Katy Bowman, MS, is the creator and talent behind the Aligned and Well™ DVD program, the director of the Restorative Exercise Institute, and the creator of the Restorative Exercise™ DVD kits for Gaiam. She is a regular contributor and expert for national health, fitness, and wellness publications and TV segments. Read more

  • Where was this book ten years ago?
I bought this book on a recommendation of a fellow homeschooler who was listening to my tales of woe from having had a bunion removed. The experience, particularly doing the painful range-of-motion exercises starting my 4th week post-op, made me hesitant to have the other bunion removed. The only hope my podiatrist could give me was to wear supportive shoes all the time, and MAYBE my other bunion (which is not nearly as bad as the one that was removed) wouldn't get any worse. But after learning about Katy Bowman, I found, bought and read her book promptly. Now I have real hope! As a biomechanical scientist, Bowman's knowledge of foot problems goes beyond drugs and surgery. Human tissue, she says, can and will shift to its correct position if you diligently work at. So I am now re-learning how to walk (I have always walked with my feet turned out, like my dad did) and doing her prescribed exercises every day that one woman has testified reduced the angle of her bunion. I am also NOT wearing supportive shoes. Wearing super-supportive shoes or orthotics causes the feet muscles to atrophy, and compromise our foot health, which can compromise knee and hip health. I am walking around in socks, and come summer I will get my feet accustomed to walking barefoot, inside and out. If I had only had this book ten years ago, I would not have needed any surgery! I highly recommend this book to every single woman, whether you have any foot problems or not, but especially if you have any pain or problems below your waist. It's time we start taking care of our feet, ladies! ... show more

  • Straightforward, tough-love info on healthy feet
I am not a runner, but had adopted the ways of the barefoot running movement a while back after having years and years of hip, shoulder and neck pain as well as overall poor postural habits. Earth shoes helped several years ago, but after having 4 babies in 5 years I was just too jacked up & going completely barefoot was a great help. When I first saw Bowman's book, I blew it off. As a massage therapist who works with pregnant women and mothers, I had been a fan of her blog for quite some time. But as a holistic practitioner myself who has semi-regular bodywork and a non-sedentary lifestyle, I assumed that I was light years ahead of a book about high heels causing back pain. Boy, was I wrong. From the very start of the book, I learned new ways to stretch and lengthen the muscles of my legs and feet which, truly, still suffer from a lifetime of wearing "real" (positive-heeled) shoes. Bowman breaks down what to look for in a shoe for people who must wear them for work or otherwise, and she gives a step-by-step guide to increasing alignment and long-term health and mobility simply by starting with your feet. She empowers the reader immediately to take action on reducing - and possibly eliminating - their pain. ... show more

  • Great information for anyone who wears shoes
Although the title says "Every Woman's . . ." and the cover shoes a high heeled shoe this book really is for anyone who routinely wears shoes of any kind. Yes, high heels are mentioned but the majority of the book focuses on educating the reader about the anatomy, alignment and mechanics of the foot and footwear. Ms. Bowman covers so much in such an easy to read book. After she introduces the reader to the basics she gives guidelines on what to consider when selecting shoes, pitfalls to be aware of for many types of shoes and what to do to improve the condition of your feet. As she focuses on how to improve the foot/ankle as a whole there are not different exercises for different problems. Instead she gives an exercise program that will help all feet perform their intended functions better. In the back of the book she addresses issues concerning foot health in pregnancy, childhood and as we age. After reading this I am better equipped to find shoes to promote optimal foot health for my whole family. The only thing she doesn't do is buy great shoes for you. ... show more

  • Your feet are your body's foundation
This book addresses foot health, a timely and very important topic. The book is well written and contains a lot of information. I am giving the book four stars instead of five because I think somewhere in the book Ms Bowman could have offered a one to two page summary -- the quick and dirty on healthy footwear - which would pull together all the information in the book so that if you only remembered those few tips, you would have all you to need to begin purchasing healthy footwear. (I have always bought leather shoes with a bendable toe box, but I have learned those are NOT the benchmarks you want to use) . Toward that end, I am offering a mini-summary here. I highly recommend the website nwfootankle.com (see Articles on Foot Health) and their product Correct Toes (these will stay on your feet; try it and see). Here is what I have learned from them: 1. Try to go barefoot as much as possible -- certainly at home. (my note: indoors, I wear cotton toe sox with grips and these work very well. See the website toesox.com for merchandise. If you get the toe sox with open toe pockets, the Correct Toes fit nicely) 2. Avoid compressed toe boxes -- My explanation of this: the toe box of the shoe should be shaped like the letter "U" rather than the letter "O" (99% of all shoes sold have compressed toe boxes) 3. Avoid high heels, pointed toes, toe springs and heel wedges -- the shoe should lay flat on the floor 4. The shoe should be very flexible == you can bend and twist it (compare with cowboy boots or some clogs) 5. Check out Vibrams Fivefingers (REI is a national retailer) as well as Lems Shoes, Archipedico, etc. Your feet truly are your body's foundation -- stand on solid ground! ... show more
