  • Effective and quiet
I used this rototiller to prepare the soil in a very weedy, messy 144 sq ft garden bed. I was very impressed by how easy it was to power through this job. Assembly was easy.

  • 20 lbs is too light unless doing the lightest of tilling
I learned that this Earthwise unit's net weighs of 20 lbs is too light unless doing the lightest of tilling. I bought this model due to having an all metal handle that would be hard to break. I had broke a Sun Joe tiller after 7 years in Texas clay. First the Sun Joe trigger handle kept breaking (out of warranty and unavailable) and I kept repairing with Gorilla tape etc. Finally the transmission went our trying to go through dry clay. I admit that I abused it using it on that concrete like clay - a good run! On first use it bounced uncontrollably on hard soil, I think only due to light weight to power ratio. It also has a bad trigger design that requires placing two hands on on side of the handle to start. If starting on tough soil this means it will immediately lurch to the left before you can get your hand on the left side of the handle. I returned it and went back to an equal priced Sun Joe model. The Sun Joe has a one hand operated switch making it more controllable and it also appears to somehow run more smoothly due to weighing only an extra 7 lbs totaling 27 lbs net weight. IMO I think Earthwise should change the trigger design and add 7 lbs maybe with more robust tube handles and maybe bigger wheel assembly - then they would have a winner. ... show more

  • This little machine is a Beast!
For a machine this small, it really has a lot of power. Once you get the hang of it, it does a pretty good job of tilling the soil. It's best to make multiple passes up and down the path of your garden, but will really make the soil nice and smooth. My only regret is not buying this sooner.

  • Eats the ground right up!
My 12x24-foot garden was previously tilled five years ago by tractor before a fence was put in. The two years after it was put it, I did all turnover by hand to avoid having to remove and re-fence, as the tractor tiller was the only one I had access to at the time. After the land sat undisturbed for two years, and my dad sold the tractor implement so borrowing was no longer an option, I knew going in by hand was going to be borderline torturous work. It was time for a walk-behind tiller. I don't like the upkeep of gas powered equipment so electric was the way to go. I began by giving the tiller the best start I could - taking out all the old, tall, stick-like weeds and then whacked the grass and smaller weeds down for ease of tilling. When I finally set tiller to earth, it was a bit more aggressive than I expected! Add in the weight and you'll get a workout. (Consider it arm day if you're not much of a gym goer, like me.) I worked in long strips, letting it lightly dig in under its own power going forward, then dragged it backward slowly to get it in deep. Handled my somewhat rocky soil no issue, and I took a break after every other 24' pass to catch my breath from wrestling with it and pick out some of the bigger rocks before they got buried again. Tore up the entire plot in under 30 minutes including the pauses. My one knock is it's a bit heavy for me while it's trying to work its way forward as I'm dragging it backward. I'm 5'2", about 110lbs, and this is what constitutes a workout for me - yard work. At the end of the day, I wanted the power and the size, so I accept the arm day willingly. I will just plan for the more precision work first before my arms quit on me :) Overall very happy with this purchase. Can't believe I dragged my feet getting out there to use it because the time was a small fraction of the work in past years. Hopefully longevity holds out and it will make me a happy gardener for years to come. ... show more

  • Solid little tiller!
Not sponsored! genuine paying customer!! So, I was skeptical at first. Wasn't sure if I wanted to go electric or gas. but didn't want the hassle of either! All of the reviews (good ones) were right! Delivered in original product box, in good shape and no damage! Easy to put together, with just a few minutes. Very easy operation and really NO maintenance. I see some reviews talk about maybe a silly scratch or something on the finish, mine did not have any but come on, its a tiller and its going to get banged up!! First garden in over 10 yrs, and was planning a swath about 25' X 11'. I am so impressed with the power of this tiller, it definitely wore me out! It was capable of pulling rocks about the size of my fist, the soil was just right not dry or too wet and I did not even remove top layer of sod before tilling! I powered through the soil up to the 8" depth that was stated. Never took any brakes (except when I was tired) never heated up or faltered! I feel that this tiller could be handled/operated by most gardeners. Easy handles to pick up and not very heavy. Definitely takes up a lot less room for storing. the only problem after a few hours of use was the soft foam/rubber grip on handle got torn. The run handle to make it operate puts wear and tear. But not an issue at all for me. Definitely a true believer. I would recommend this tiller to anyone! ... show more
