Description

Amazon 1 Bestseller“Tom Clancy fans open to a strong female lead will clamor for more. – PWThe lead NTSB air-crash investigator—trapped between a stealth drone and a hard crash. A US Air Force C-130 transport plane, bearing top- secret cargo, lies shattered in the Nevada desert at Area 51’s Groom Lake. China’s prototype fifth-generation jet fighter goes missing. Far above, a stealth drone flies a very lethal, and very covert Black Op. The CIA, the US military command, and the secretive National Reconnaissance Office are all locked in a political battle for control of the nation’s future. Miranda Chase, the NTSB’s autistic air-crash genius investigator, lands in the center of the gathering maelstrom. Burdened with a new team and a unique personality, she must connect the pieces to stay alive. And she must do it before the wreckage of her past crashes down upon her and destroys US-China relations forever. Read more

  • Most intriguing
Buckman is a new author to me, but based on this book, not one that I will henceforth overlook. I found his central character to be fascinating; a high level functioning autistic whose life revolves around her career as a premier NTSB investigator. Character development for her and her team is excellent. It's a great mix of aviation tech and action/suspense. I have subsequently read the next four books in this series and am hooked. Recommended. ... show more

  • Weak plot
Disliked plot sequence. Drone stuff should be in the middle

  • Very compelling story
I started this book at about 10 PM just to see if I would like it. I finished it at 4AM, so I guess the answer was yes. I came across the MC in a collection I picked up that details how she gets started, but this was the first full length book I tried. Trust me, I will read the rest! This is a extremely well done story that mixes both science, technology, and genius level intellect with a great mystery story of what an airplane crash is all about. I very much recommend this to anyone interested in Military and/or mystery style stories. It contains some fairly explicit sex, so is not recommended for younger readers. And, yes, it is military so profanity abounds. It's still a great tale and you should read it! ... show more

  • Excellent character development with pacing that kept me turning the pages
I purchased this book for my husband as he loves all things military. This is his review. I just finished M. L. Buchman’s first book in the Miranda Chase series, DRONE. It introduced me to the world of air crash investigations and his fascinating character, Miranda Chase. An unequalled lead investigator for the NTSB, Ms. Chase is an enigma to those around her due to her largely absent social skills. But I liked her for her quirky personality just as much as for her encyclopedic mind and unmatched powers of deductive reasoning. Miranda Chase is an intriguing combination of Sherlock Holmes, Adrian Monk and Commander Data. And she never lets go of a mystery until she has solved it. I eagerly await getting to know her better in the next volume of this series. ... show more

  • Wow, wow, and wow
This is a fascinating and multilayered spy/military/NTSB thriller that is incredibly fun to drive into. Great characters with interesting psychological profiles. A tad repetitive in parts with gratuitous sex but hey who doesn't like a little gratuitous sex, right. At least I assume that is the logic behind it. If you pardon the expression. See what I did there? That was a little gratuitous sex. Did it improve my review? ... show more

  • Possibly the best of all of Buchman's books
I started reading this book on the way home from an international trip. Big mistake. I couldn't put it down even though I was exhausted. Amazing and real characters--I work with people like Miranda (and Jeremy) all the time. And the story? It's got everything: just-believable military and technical possibilities, the good guys and bad guys, and the insight into what makes all of them tick. If you like technothrillers, an international cast with goals that you have to uncover as you read, you will love this book. Terrific pacing, great characters, and an outstanding story. Will keep you reading until you literally can't keep your eyes open. I can't wait for the next Miranda Chase book. ... show more

  • Missing the integrity of his normal characters
I own many of Mr Buchman's books, so I'm sad and surprised to be writing this review. Unfortunately, this is one of my least favorites. Far too many of the characters in this book don't have the personal integrity that the Night Stalkers, Delta, Seattle residents, and the Firehawks have. The extra marital affairs (and worse) start on page 9. There's another one starting around page 70. There are hints of a third one farther in the book. Then there is the subordinate being intimate with the boss. And our own military knowingly killing their own people in a new project. Just too much time spent on the relationships of people that don't have the ethics that make me want to enjoy reading about them. The supposed heroine is really smart, but doesn't do anything but her job for all but the last few pages of the book. (OK, I'll admit the escape scene was funny, but very improbable - she just doesn't seem fit enough to climb a roof.) She and her support staff are just dragged down by the other muck in the book. If you are looking for a book you can't put down, try one of Mr. Buchman's other series. ... show more

  • A "fast mover!"
A fast-moving read with wonderful characters, and an interesting story-line. Miranda Chase is the book's protagonist, a somewhat quirky, but brilliant individual whose success with the NTSB is legendary. Called upon to investigate the crash of a C-130, she encounters more "turbulence" than she expects, and in the process, gives as good as she gets. If you are a fan of military techno-thrillers, you'll want to read this book...and the next two in this series, as well, by the looks of it. ... show more
