  • The guitar is great- updated review
Color: Sunburst Size: 39" Right Handed
Bought this kit to get back to playing the guitar. I stopped playing for about 15 years. I used to play a Fender. Donner has built a nice guitar. Everything about the guitar is quality. It was very carefully packed and arrived in perfect condition. The accessories that come in the kit aren’t so good. The tuner doesn’t function and is trash. The amp does function, but is very limited. The clear setting is indeed clear, the distortion is almost non existent. The amp doesn’t get overly loud. The sound quality is about that of a cheap Bluetooth speaker, which by the way, it doubles as. The strings seem to have eternal stretch, I have to retune the guitar every 5-10 minutes. If I were to buy again, I would just buy the guitar and find somewhere different to get the accessories. I believe Donner would do well to raise the price a bit and give you a better quality amp and tuner, they are selling a great sounding guitar and dragging it down with the junk that goes with it. Like buying a Cadillac and getting a cheap Bluetooth speaker to play tunes. UPDATE- after leaving my original review, I was contacted by Donner Direct. Since I was dissatisfied with the amp and the guitar tuner, they wanted to make it right. They worked out a fair deal to make up for my dissatisfaction. I find this very admirable! I have changed my review to 5 stars because I am completely satisfied. Thank you Donner, for being a reputable company! ... show more

  • Amazing Value
Color: Sunburst Size: 39" Right Handed
The media could not be loaded. I’d had my eye on the Donner DST-1S for some time. A kit that included a guitar, amp, cord, capo, tuner, gig bag, extra strings, and four picks for $129? What wasn’t to love? Especially considering the Stratocaster-style guitar came with two single coil pickups and a humbucking pickup (S-S-H), which, while not uncommon, is still harder to find than the more common three single coil pickup configuration. At first glance, I imagined the guitar would be mostly trash. It had to be at that price point, right? But the few existing reviews were positive, and I was already a fan of other Donner products like their 10 watt amp (the DEA-1) and their effects pedals. Could it actually be a decent guitar? Turned out it was. Let’s start with its appearance. Its high gloss sunburst finish was equally as sharp as my Telecaster’s. Its neck did not share the gloss. It had more of a dry, matte finish, which I was not mad at. Felt fine. I did wish the frets were filed and polished. Like many affordable guitars, this one had frets that were a bit poky on the ends. That wasn’t a deal breaker. With a little work and a bit of YouTubing, anyone could learn how to fix those frets and make them feel as if they were on a high-end guitar. The action, right out of the box, was playable. It was lower near the headstock, and a bit higher near the bridge, but it didn’t seem to impact the tone or the way it played much. At some point I’ll adjust that action, but for now it works. I noticed no string buzz, and the intonation seemed mostly accurate. Though the guitar was fit with a tremolo, I put the the tremolo bar (also known as a whammy bar) away. Even on high end guitars, tremolos are famous for wrecking the guitar’s tuning, so I sure didn’t trust this one to keep the guitar on pitch after a good old fashioned Eddie Van Halen dive bomb. Not that I could sound like Eddie. Because I couldn’t. Not on my best day. The strings were fine. I doubt they were as quality as Ernie Balls or D’Addarios, but they were plenty slinky for my playing and sounded good. The pickups, as far as I could tell (I’m no expert), sounded okay. There was a significant difference in volume when switching from the single coils to the humbucker. The humbucker was way louder. I could see myself playing a rhythm chord progression with the single coils and then flipping to the humbucker for a lead solo. The humbucker would provide that necessary volume boost to let the lead cut through the instrumental mix and be heard over the other players. Many players simply hit their stomp box to achieve this (Tube Screamer, anyone?), but the humbucker does the job. The amp, a tiny little 3 watter, was surprisingly good. It charged with an included USB cord, and included both a clean and a distorted channel, plus knobs to adjust gain, volume, and tone. It also had inputs for headphones and for auxiliary items like an MP3 player. It was so small and so light, you could easily toss it in a backpack and take it anywhere. The gig bag was way more sturdy than I anticipated. I’d purchased cheap guitars before and found their gig bags to be little more than burlap sacks. This one had decent zippers and was even reinforced with rubber padding at the bottom. The capo was better than some I’ve purchased in the past. The spring was strong enough to solidly grip the guitar neck, and clipped on with no problem at all. The tuner worked fine, and came with a battery. I hate it when I buy something that requires batteries, especially those weird coin-shaped batteries, but doesn’t come with batteries included. Burns me up. Thankfully, Donner anticipated my needs. All in all, I was really happy with this guitar. At $129, I’m not sure how they even make a profit. Nicely done, Donner. Nicely done. ... show more

  • Solid Guitar for the Price!
Color: Sunburst Size: 39" Right Handed
I had an itch to pick up electric guitar after about 20 years and decided to try out a Donner after considering the cost and some other, honest, reviews. I have been playing this guitar almost every day for about a month and don't have any complaints. Out of the box it was set up pretty good and only needed to adjust a few strings for intonation. The frets were dressed very nicely and comfortable to play. The action was also very comfortable considering I had been out of practice for some time. Some folks would like a lower action, but this seems consistent with most manufacturers standards of new guitars. It actually has the same measurements as Gibson uses for their new guitars to go to market. The strings are cheap, but not bad. I haven't bothered to swap them out yet. The humbucker is okay, I like the sound with some fuzz or crunch. The neck is much warmer and great for lead. I have been playing through a 20+ year old Marshall 10w practice amp and headphones. The little amp is also a fun bonus. It keeps a charge for a good while, but it's not very loud. Good for running some headphones into if you want a decent clean and little bit of gain. My favorite feature is the Bluetooth function. I can connect to my phone and play along with tracks from Spotify (search for drum and bass for guitar practice). Strap, cable, picks, etc are all very basic and that's not a bad thing. Overall, I would definitely recommend if you want to get started playing or looking for a cheap HSS Strat copy that won't break the bank. I would also imagine this would be an awesome gift for young people to get into playing music. I actually liked this guitar so much in ordered another Donner and will review after a little time. ... show more

  • Awesome starter guitar!
Color: Sunburst Size: 39in Left Handed
The guitar arrived well packaged without any damage or missing parts. It comes with the basic accessories you need to get you started. Right out of the box, the guitar is pretty high quality and feels solid. The frets were dressed very nicely and comfortable to play. I do suggest upgrading the strings so you don't have to re-tune them every 5–10 minutes. The amp doubles as a Bluetooth speaker and is small enough to carry around when it's fully charged. It's decent for personal use. The gig bag is more sturdy than I expected. I've purchased a cheap guitar before and found the gig bag to be little more than burlap sack. Overall, I am very pleased with this guitar and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get started. Thank you Donner!!! ... show more
