  • Perfect choice to replace ventless gas insert
The media could not be loaded. One of the best things we liked about our home’s cozy, oak bookcase-lined library/den was the fireplace in between two sets of bookcases. While enjoying its warmth during the first winter after we moved in, my husband developed an unrelenting cough. Dry, irritated throat. I wondered if it could be due to the ventless gas fireplace. After research, I found out that, although allowed by code, ventless gas fireplaces are not recommended due to - you guessed it - products of combustion that are released into the room air and deposited on ceilings, mantles, and in lungs. We couldn’t shut that thing off fast enough! The fireplace is on an inside wall, no chimney, no way to install a vent without ripping out walls. We were unwilling to do that to our 1882 house. So our only solution to still being able to enjoy the aesthetics and warmth of a fireplace was to go electric. So many choices! We wanted a traditional look, and to be able to use our existing solid oak mantle - not original to the house, but well made in a style to complement the home’s architecture. After removing the old insert and contemplating the gaping hole that remained, we measured and started searching for an electric log set or insert that would fit. I think I can honestly say that I looked at and read reviews of every option to be found on the internet that was of the right size. My greatest concern, after size, was aesthetics. I knew we would have a ‘fake’ fireplace, but I didn’t want it to be so glaringly fake that even seeing it in my peripheral vision would cause me to cringe inwardly and wonder what was I thinking when I bought that! Looking at log sets and inserts at the big box stores caused me to despair of ever finding a fireplace to match my list of must-haves. Until I found this Dimplex insert. Size - check. Style - check. But am I ever amazed at how real this fireplace looks, especially after hanging the front trim with integrated tempered glass in place. Even when it’s not running, the logs look like charred wood, laid in a natural position. Not like the painted plastic placed symmetrically of some others. The ember bed is the best. Some others looked like blinking lights, three across, all blinking in unison. Even in the higher- end units. This one looks real. Truly, one would have to look really closely to see that those are not real hot embers under the logs, flickering randomly, just like a real wood fire. I just love this feature - Dimplex got it right. As for the flames, many electric log sets have a repeating pattern that you can actually detect while watching. I have tried, but been unable to discern a pattern to the flickering flames in this unit. The randomness is very natural looking. The mirrored back panel, which is invisible once you add the glass front trim panel, reflects the backside of the logs and flames, but the logs are shaped so that you can’t tell that you are seeing the same logs. The flames appear to be rising from in between the back and front logs, adding even more realism. We’ve used this fireplace with heat on the coldest, windiest nights, even though we have a fantastic gas furnace for whole-house heat. But getting a bit chilly in the evening goes with living in an old, high-ceilinged house, and blustery Midwest winters. Many nights we just turn on the flames alone, for ambience and perceived warmth that comes from having even a fake fire in the hearth! But when we do click on the remote button to ask for heat, it warms up our 10 x10 room nicely. Our three cats appreciate it, too! I do not think we could have found a better electric fireplace insert anywhere, for the price, quality, and realism. Another ‘winter weather advisory’ for this evening with sleet then snow, plus high winds. Put on a movie and pop some popcorn, put a blanket on my lap, add a cat or two - plus this fireplace, and we will be just as cozy and comfy as can be. When installing, we had to fill the space left by the removal of our old gas insert, which was much taller. My husband built a 6” high shelf supported by a 2x4 frame for the insert to securely rest upon, raising it above the bottom of the mantel hearth. A 1x6 piece of prefinished oak covered the rough under frame. Above the insert, a piece if 1x3 prefinished oak filled the remaining gap. It looks as if those pieces have always been there. The small gaps in each side are covered by the glass trim panel’s black metal frame. We were going to hardwire this unit, for which the manufacturer provides instructions, but decided to use the plug instead, for which a new outlet was installed in a new dedicated circuit. The reason is that if we need to remove the insert for cleaning or maintenance, all we have to do is unplug it, rather than unwire it - which for many people would require calling an electrician. Keep it simple. I rarely write reviews, but it took me so much time researching and reading tons of reviews to find what I consider to be the best electric insert available in the $1000 price range, that I wanted to share my thoughts on the experience to help someone else in a similar situation with their decision making process. Hubby and I are extremely happy with our choice!! The rain is right now switching to sleet, temp is dropping, wind us picking up…time to turn on the fireplace and snuggle down and watch for the snow! ... show more

  • Beautiful fireplace, but the lights really don't add much
We installed this unit in the opening of what was a sparsely used wood-burning fireplace. It was almost a perfect fit. Our contractor installed the electrical connection, trimmed the unit, and it looks great. The remote works well, and the unit is intuitive to use. It looks about as natural as one can find anywhere. At first glance, it actually looks like a real fire! It generates enough heat to take the edge off on a cool night in our nearly 300 sq ft family room, so no issue there. The only complaint that I have is with the LED lighting - it doesn't add much to the experience. I didn't notice an appreciable change in the effect when I increased the intensity of the light. Increasing the speed and intensity of the flame works ok, but the light really does not do much. If you are in the market for a very natural looking fireplace, then this is the one for you. But don't expect the lights to add much to the experience. ... show more

  • It's incredable
I looked at dozens of fireplaces after deciding that a gas model was not for us. I had the old ones from my childhood in mind when I first started looking. Let me say, this is a different beast. It is more realistic than you can imagine. I dare anyone to tell the difference from a flame unit from 10 feet away from looks alone. It does cost more than most and it does not put out a ton of heat, but it is the real deal. I am 100% satisfied. ... show more

  • Awesome fireplace
From the get go...we were very pleased with the appearance and function. Super easy to use remote control and the options for flames height and speed is really nice. Heat is great and blower fan is very quiet.

Very easy install, looked up directions for this on internet so that when I received it I would already have the opening ready to go for install. No issues with shipping.
