  • Stopped working after 6 months. Throw away Chinese garbage.
Update 10/26/15: Remote stopped working two months ago. Mfr wanted $15 plus shipping to fix it. Um, no. Make electronics that aren't a piece of throw away garbage, and until you do, you will get one star and not another cent of my money. I was looking for a cheap tuner to allow me to watch live TV on a basement projector. We got rid of our cable boxes and are down to a fairly basic cable package. I just connected my coaxial cable from the wall to the back of the unit, ran an HDMI cable from the Ematic to my projector, did an auto search with signal set on cable, and modulation set to loop through. It took probably 15 or 20 minutes and found 180 stations. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, it uses its own numbering system, so the channels are not intuitive. Also, about 2/3 of them were scrambled. Many of the channels had high and low def versions. I went through the somewhat labor intensive process of deleting all the low res channels and scrambled channels, and now I have about 25 nice high res channels including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Food TV, CW, ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, PBS, and a bunch more. Almost all are in 1080i or 720p which both look great on my 720p projector. The remote is clunky and not backlit. For the life of me, I'll never understand why all remotes are not backlit. This is a cheap and easy feature to add. Full star reduction for that stupidity. Another star reduction for general clunkiness, making me jump through numerous hoops to edit channels instead of just having an add/delete button on the remote. Auto resolution setting is nice, allows the program to set the resolution. I couldn't get the program guide to work. Maybe this only works with antenna? I also didn't know what the power setting was for antenna, but figured since I was using cable it didn't matter. I added a 64 gig USB flash drive http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A35X1BM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 from Amazon but have not yet played with the PVR function or tried to update the firmware or access files on USB. I will update my review after I do. But $65 for a tv receiver with 64 gig recording capability is pretty awesome. A couple other mentions, the program info stays on the screen a bit long. That is kind of annoying. I do like that it provides the broadcast resolution for each channel, though it doesn't detect the real channel/program info. I also was also unable to figure out how to rename a channel. I pressed the designated button, but nothing happened. Not being able to rename the channels will be a major annoyance. All in all, a decent unit, considering the price, about $40 shipped. No idea of long term reliability as I just installed last night, but if you are looking for a way to bring live tv to a tuner-less display, such as a projector, this is a pretty affordable, though somewhat clunky solution, and it handles high def quite well, as long as you have adequate signal. It would be great if this unit could be controlled by a universal remote. Unfortunately, unlike my other remotes, this one needs to be pointed right at the unit, which is behind the couch. My projector and Roku 3 remotes can be pointed at the opposite wall, where the picture is displayed. A mixed bag, but not a bad little unit. ... show more

  • Excellent digital converter
This digital converter is identical to the ones that they sell in various Walmart stores. I decided to write my review into two different categories, pros and cons. Pros ▪️It comes with a very easy to follow owners manual although the set up it’s really two steps, first step is selecting her language which by default it is selected to English and the second step is doing a channel search and once you’re done, it will automatically exit out of the channel search and will start being able to watch TV. ▪️ it comes with everything you need: batteries, remote, owner’s manual, composite cable that is the three colors, red, yellow, and white. ▪️You can easily set a recording or if something is currently in progress you can hit the record button and record. If you do this, you must mentally stop recording or if a program is already in progress let’s say it is 1 o’clock and you want to record the program to on Mac with stop when the program ends when you set the recording set the start time one minute ahead so instead of being 1 o’clock would be 1:01 and it will record until the program is scheduled to end. ▪️You can use any thumb drive to record, the more gigabytes you have the more shows you can record. ▪️No subscription is required, no Internet is required. Recordings do not delete after certain amount of time so you could keep a recording indefinitely and they are also not protected by HCP or DRM so if you plan on going on a trip and you want to take some of your TV shows with you, you can do so and they will be able to be played in VLC player. (This to me is a plus). ▪️ if you previously purchased a digital converter box from Walmart and you’re looking for basically the same model this is the same model. It just has a different name on it so this means that you can take the thumb drive from one digital converter and plug it into this one and you’ll still be able to watch your shows without having to reformat or having a different format. Cons: ▪️ i’m not sure exactly why but they don’t seem to last more than a year which it is quite disappointing so if you choose to purchase this, don’t expect it to last more than a year and I would strongly recommend that you purchase a warranty. The one I had purchased from Walmart did not last a year and thankfully at the time of purchase I had purchased a warranty. I truly wish that they would make these last a lot longer than a year simply because it is easy to use and very little steps that you need to do in order to get it working. It’s pretty much plug-in play. ▪️ if you are currently recording a program, you will not be able to change the channel. (to me that’s not much of a big issue, but maybe some people that would be an issue.) ▪️If you have several programs recorded, let’s say you have 10 programs recorded and you want to delete nine of them you must delete them one by one. (to me this is not an issue). ▪️ if you’re looking for a program like to see what comes on other channels, when you search the electronic program guide to go to the next channel, it will also change the channel to some people that may be an issue to me that’s not really big of an issue. You can always look online as well. In a nutshell, I’d like this digital converter box. I just wish it would last more than a year so if you do purchase it get a warranty it will definitely be worth it. ... show more
