This is a really great starter kit for the Circuit Joy Extra Machine. Within 30 minutes, I was us and running producing designs The Machine itself - The Joy Extra is a mid sized model. It connects to your device via bluetooth, and I found the setup to be really easy. The Cricut app walks you through the connection process. Since this is a mid sized model, it cannot produce larger designs and does not take the 12" wide generic vinyls found on Amazon. You either need to buy the specific Joy Xtra sized vinyl or be prepared to cut the standard sized vinyl down so that it will fit the machine. Probably not so good for t-shirt sized designs due to the small bed size but you can make most things happen by dividing up the prints The App - If you're new to Cricut, it requires an app to function. That's where you'll make all of your designs and send them to the machine to cut. In order to get the most out of the machine and the app you'll need to sign up for the paid version of the app at 12 bucks a month. That's kind of a bummer, you can do some stuff with the free version but it is severely limited. Starter bundle- this pack comes with various materials to get you started. It's mainly good for decal making but there are materials included to make cards as well. Additionally it includes the tools to pick your designs and some extra implements for the machine. It was really nice having all this included. Cricut materials are widely available at the big box stores but it was nice to have all the things to get started immediately ... show more

I've had some time to use it, and this is a pretty fantastic vinyl cutter. It has an incredibly small footprint, and is easy to just close and move when necessary. One small issue is that... I'm not entirely sure if it turns off? As far as I can tell, even when closed, the machine is still fully on... like, my computer is able to send jobs to it. You'd thing that when you close the tray it would turn off, but apparently not. Regardless, it's small. Extremely portable, but has a big enough work area for basically anything you would want it for. I'm less sold on the starter kit. It's nice to have the mats and transfer tape... but that and the vinyl it comes with isn't really a $130 value, in my opinion. I'd recommend skipping the starter kit and just buying the mat (Cricut sells it for six dollars) and investing in a small starter tool kit, and some Oracle 651 vinyl. ... show more

We already have a Cricut Maker 3 in our craft room and it's an absolute beast of a craft cutting machine. But after about a year and a half of using it, I realize that I seldom have the need to cut large format designs, or mass-produce repeated smaller designs. When Cricut released the new Joy Xtra, I didn't think there was a real need for it since everything it can do, the Maker 3 can do and more. However you can't really deny the convenience of portability with the Joy Xtra. The fact that they sized it JUST right means it can handle the most popular Cricut projects that most people will be making most of the time. The Joy Xtra can only use the Joy line of tools, meaning it can cut, write/draw, and foil (I've used the "foil" setting with the bold point for effective scoring and debossing too). Unlike the Joy, the cutting surface is much larger and actually takes standard Letter/A4 paper sizes. This is perfect as most printers only support paper widths in those sizes and the Joy Xtra includes a feature missing from the Joy: Print and Cut. This means you can easily make your own stickers and decals. I've even found some awesome printable heat transfer vinyl here on Amazon that allows you to print a full color design on your inkjet with standard dye inks (no need for sublimation ink) and just cut and iron it onto fabric. This compact little Cricut looks so sleek too. There are no visible buttons you have to press, unlike on the Makers and Explorers. Everything is wirelessly done via Bluetooth, and it includes a smart sensor to know when you've fed material into the feed tray so you don't need to press a load/unload button. I wish the Maker 3 had that feature. There is no dedicated tool holder for pens/markers, so you might need to manually swap out tool housings but it's not a huge inconvenience. The included card mat and card inserts make creating a greeting card a BREEZE. You can just hop into the Design Space software and download any of the hundreds of pre-made card designs and you can get crafting in minutes. In terms of size limitations, while the Joy Xtra mats are basically sized for standard printer paper, Cricut has released some Joy Xtra compatible smart materials that will allow you to cut designs that are up to 4 feet long. The smaller size is adorable, but the tradeoff to the portability is that there is no on-board storage for accessories and tools. So while you can take your Joy Xtra to a friend's place or any other room in your home, you will probably end up lugging around some kind of tool box or tool bag too. This is THE perfect cutting machine for beginners who just want to get up and running quickly in the crafting space and this bundle has enough materials to get you started on your new crafting addiction. Because it comes with a trial to Cricut Access you'll have unlimited projects to try out. Set aside some time on the weekend because before you know it you'll have a Cricut hangover. ... show more

    • Much better for small items

I was able to use this for several smaller projects instead of my Explore Air 2. It's nice to have the larger size when I need it. But I do a lot of smaller things and this is just the right size for most of my projects. I haven't done any cards yet but the starter bundle comes with all kinds of materials and card supplies to allow you to experiment with various projects. I will be using this as my primary going forward and will save the Explore Air 2 for bigger things. I did have a little trouble connecting via Bluetooth but it was a Windows 11 issue that can be solved easily if you know what to check. There is a help article on the Cricut website titled "Bluetooth and USB Connection Help" that will give instructions on what to check. I don't think I can list the URL in this review. But that was a Windows problem due to a change in the way they discover Bluetooth devices. So it's not a Cricut problem. ... show more
