  • Hard to rip, not a lot of tinder, burns fast
Item Shape: Classical
I could not tear this apart. I ended up smashing it with a sharp rock. When I was able to mostly pull it apart, it was not a lot of tinder. If I really needed to start a fire, I’d probably use 3-5 of these. It did make a decent sized flame, but it did not last 5 minutes. The inside material that isn’t coated lights easily (I was using a farro rod and didn’t even see the spark that made it catch fire), but with such a small amount of tinder it’s hard to hit with a farro rod. For an emergency item, I think it’s ok as long as you’re prepared to use a few at a time. ... show more

  • The so-called compass is dangerous.
I bought this item with my own money - unlike the others making a review. I ended up paying a little over $5 after tax, and received it today ( 9/30/23). It is of course, Made in China product. The compass. I like tools with more than one function. The compass is one of the reasons I ordered this item. It points in the opposite direction from magnetic north. This may seem like a small thing, but someone who doesn't know any better and relies on this at least pointing in the general direction of north, could end up dangerously lost. As a rule the compasses, even button ones made in China, point in the general direction of north. This one doesn't, and not because it is stuck. Ferro rod. It is of the hard category. It takes a good deal of pressure and gives off many fine, short lived sparks. This is compared to the ones frequently found as companion ones coming with magnesium bars. Those are softer and produce larger, longer lasting sparks. The harder rods last longer but are harder to use. Scraper. The type commonly comming with ferro rods. Sometimes they are o.k. The ones which have a burr on the edge resulting from the stamping process in their manufacture are better ones. Without a good scraper, it is difficult to be really successful, even with a really good rod. The scraper I received is o.k. but, not a really good one. The burr is used for timing material from the rod and some tinder such as fatwood. Lanyard. It serves it's purpose. It attaches the ferro rod to the scraper. It looks like 550 cord, but isn't. I don't know how it's made or what it's made of. There are only 4 three strand's in it's sheath. Commonly used in chinese products. Handle. Good. Tinder plugs. You have to do a certain way but, they work and have a strong flame rlfor more than three minutes. They appear to be made of cotton plugs used by dentists soaked in an accelerant. They are very hard. They need to be broken and pulled until making hairlike short multiple fuss. The ferro rod needs to be positioned so that the sparks are thown into this fuss. The compass is the reason I marked this kit so low. Even without the compass, the highest score this kit wood receive would be three stars. Don't buy unless you know what you're doing with it. ... show more
