This is a great tool to have if you need a hand powered winch. The ratchet teeth on the spool are made from a single solid piece of metal instead of stacked stamped steel plates that are welded together. The operation for this winch is very simple: First you need to slide the spring on the drive pawl from the downwards (engaged position) to the upwards (disengaged position) so that the handle lever becomes free moving. Next you need to depress the guard lever that's engaging the ratchet teeth at the front of the winch. Once the drive pawl and the guard lever are disengaged the spool will spin freely and you can pull out the cable. To begin winching the cable back in you will need to slide the drive pawl spring into the downwards position to reengage the drive pawl with the ratchet teeth on the spool. To release the cable while it's under tension you need to disengage the drive pawl and move the handle lever fully forwards until it interacts with the guard lever and it will release the tension one tooth at a time. My only concern regarding this product is that the front anchor hook that swivels is being held by a pin that is using an E clip instead of a cotter pin and I think cotter pins are just a little more secure in my opinion. My come along keeps getting jamed and won't release easily. If I am out working in the field I don't want to have to mess with the equipment trying to get it to work. Not super impressed so far. It seems durable but the actions on it aren't great.
