Update: The seller reached out after seeing my review and impressed me with their pro-active efforts to address my frustrations with the door. Upgrading to four stars for the unexpected customer care. _______________________________ Original Review: I just installed this today as a door within a door, so I can preserve my access to clean the coop interior. Check out the pics. Two door issues that almost derailed my design: - Weight of the door (definitely heavier than the standard design that has the thin metal panel that raises) - The rear of the door’s CPU/motor compartment is not flush with the door flange and needs to be recessed into the coop (I had to fabricate a new door anyway, so I just had to make the cutout bigger in the plywood so the compartment was recessed and the door mounted flush against the new plywood door I fabricated.) Pros: - Metal construction, chrome finish on possibly galvanized sheet metal. (It’ll be interesting to see how the chrome finish stands up after next winter - if the door motor doesn’t fail before then.) - The ability to program multiple open and close schedules (if you have a setup like mine with the coop sitting in between runs, multiple schedules may come in handy. I’m still pondering the possibilities. This is the first door I’ve seen with this type of programming functionality.) - It has a long, grounded 16 or 14 gauge AC cord. - It has a built-in sloped hood that looks like it may protect against rain (although I wouldn’t poor water on it to test it lol.) - The ability to program the door opening angle (one reviewer mentioned 28, which is a right angle to the door frame when opened. I have mine set at 45 which puts the door out of the way of the chickens a bit more.) - The time, date, and open and close schedules are preserved even after power loss/resets. Cons: - The power cord is connected on the rear corner of the recessed CPU/motor compartment. (In my design this is a con as I do not have power inside the coop. Luckily, the cord fits in between the plywood middle door and the coop wall to run out of the coop aside the door, so no holes or cutouts were required.) - The weight of the door. (It’s probably half a pound heavier than the other door types on Amazon. (It’s heavy enough to make outlining your door opening, and mounting the door to your coop, challenging.) - The rear of the CPU/motor compartment not being flush with the back of the door. (The door sits at an angle when trying to draw the cutout outline, making it an awkward exercise without a template. And, you have to cut a much larger opening which makes cutting into your coop, or door, more of a commitment to stay with the product, instead of potentially returning it and trying out a different door with a smaller cutout. Or, it will require fabrication of a frame that can be sandwiched in between the coop and the door.) - As mentioned above, no cutout template was provided. - The door does not open or close quickly. (There’s a substantial multi-second delay when pressing the + button to open the door or - to close the door. Chickens are fast so this might end up being an issue.) - You must hold down the + or - buttons down WHILE the door is in motion to open or close the door to your desired position. (If you accidentally let go midway, you must again press and wait for the delay until the door starts to move again. There is a learning curve, which seems needless. Why not just program the door for a single button push?) - There is no apparent integrated brake, or programmed stopping point for the door opening or closing. (Either direction, the door hitting the frame alerts you to let go of the button. I was pretty disappointed with this con, considering the nice multiple schedule programming options, along with setting the door angle. Why not have the door stop before banging into the frame? I’m worried the motor will burn out quicker because I won’t stop pressing the button at the right time and the motor will just continue to torque.) - The CPU/motor compartment access cover. (You have to lift it, hold it or hope it stays up, and peer underneath it to program the door. It’s awkward since the door is typically installed near ground level. Prepare to get on your knees. The cover is staying up on its own right now because the hinge is still new, but I’ll observe in the coming days how much it loosens up and flops. I’ll be manually opening and closing the door for many days to come, which will require lifting that access cover, so I should find out soon.) - There’s no light sensor or LED green/red open/close indicators, or battery backup. (For this price point other doors have these extra features and this door would instantly get four stars minimum with those added features.) On the fence: - The metal bars/cage design. (I’m not sure yet what to think of the drafty nature of this door. I live in the Bay Area where temps can dip or rise irregularly throughout the year. I may search for a LIGHTweight cover of some kind I can attach with zip ties to the front grill. Ventilation in the coop is important, but this increases it a lot, especially in a smaller coop where the chicks are closer to the door.) ———————— You’ll notice in the pics I haven’t painted the new plywood door. I’ll get to that after I’ve tested this door and it doesn’t malfunction within the return period. I’ve read good reviews about the customer support from the seller on this product and it’s true, they’re very proactive getting in touch with helpful messaging right after you purchase it, before delivery. I’ll likely revise my three star rating up if this door holds up during the next days and its unique functionality ends up being useful. Update: Downgrading to two stars. It's been a few days and experimenting with the door angle settings has only brought frustration. My advice: Just keep it at default 00 (for both open and close) or just set it to 40 and forget about it. I did first test the opening and closing automation with the angle set at 00 so I do know that works. If the angle is set differently on close than it's set on open, the door won't close. Admittedly, this is written in the manual. Also, let's say the door opens at the 45 angle, but then you try to reset the door angle to 40. Well, it won't close all the way because the door thinks it's only open to 40 and not 45. I think if you're going to change door angle, you have to update the angle with the door closed. Anyway, It's just kinda clunky and it seems like it could be refined. I watched it tonight not close all the way and if I remember correctly, I reset the angle yesterday evening with the door already closed, so I'm not sure why it didn't close all the way tonight. I had it set on 35, so maybe that was the issue? In any case, 40 seems to work. Also 45. ... show more

The door and hardware is sturdy and looks great. After rain and shine, it looks just like new. It is nice that the settings and date/time are retained even when you unplug the cord or if there is a power loss. But I have to take off a star for the annoying programming interface. For example ... 1) You cannot hold down the up or down button to scroll through the minutes/hours/angle settings; you must manually push each digit. Suggestion: Allow user to hold button to fast forward 2) Why is there even an option to set the angle of open and close? When you set the open angle, you also need to manually set the close angle, which means clicking 35 or 40 times for each angle setting. Suggestion: The close angle should automatically be set to the open angle when programming. Or just have a default angle of wide open instead of default of zero. 3) It is too easy to reset the programming. You can hold down the plus button to open door or hold down the minus button to close the door. But if you accidentally forget and hold down the "move" button, all your settings will get erased. And then you have to program all over again. (I've done this, several times!) Suggestion: Have a confirmation to reset option or use multiple button sequence to reset, like hold down TWO buttons to reset. I think with this programming changes, this would be a five star item.     • I just wish the bars were a solid surface- not predator proof
I actually love this door- super sturdy, super nice. NOT PREDATOR PROOF nor would it be good in a cold environment. I installed it btwn enclosed coop and their run, so predators are not a problem, the run manages that....but when winter hits, I will have to figure out a solution for the cold/wind. It is such a nice door, far better quality than the other four I have that have a life arm, but I cant get past the other issues to buy another (and I need two more). ... show more

Do you like to get up every morning and open the chicken coop door at 0530? No, you don't. Do you like having to be home every evening at 2000 to close the door? No, you don't. This coop door cuts some of the nuisance out of keeping chickens. It's easy to program the open and close times, once you've read the instruction sheet. (The settings to make it work the way you want weren't obvious and I had to figure them out by experimenting. I read the sheet afterward, which is the way I usually do it.) The only real problem with installing this is that it's much taller than my coop's doors. The gate is the right size but the electronics up top take up too much space. I don't want to be cutting my coop's wall or roof, so getting this in place requires a kludgy lash-up. (No, duct tape was not involved.) The door is bars, not solid. That's fine in a warmer climate but up here the nights are still getting down below 40 even in late May. We need a solid door. I cover the bars with cardboard for now but it's not ideal. I have a suggestion for the manufacturer: Have the door unit flash a light a few seconds or a minute before the door closes. Our chickens are smart enough to learn from that. (Most of them are. One of our birds is really simple, even for a chicken.) I can make do by using several of the timer slots to have the door partly close, reopen a minute later, and then fully close a minute after that. See if my birds can learn to recognize that. (I prefer to leave the door open most of the day and close it only at night. This wouldn't be an issue for those who prefer to keep the door closed most of the day.) ... show more
