This is going to be a bit of a mixed review,,at least for now. First there is many things I do like about this machine, and a few design flaws I don't. Firstly after only 2 1/2 hrs of splitting I noticed the rails on the tank/beam galling badly . Upon further inspection I found the bracket/shoe on the end of the ram lifts right off the rails , the "Lips " barley even wrap around the rails enough to keep it from coming off ,, undoubtedly that will bend the ram if not addressed. Second, the ram stops about 2 " from the wedge causing incomplete splitting on stringy type woods or wet wood, I'm splitting dry ash and green maple right now. Adding a small block of wood takes care of that though pushing it all the way through. Thirdly, the wedge has flat sides with no flare in back and it won't quite spread the wood enough to get a complete split ,,some angled "wings" welded on the back should allow the wood to spread further allowing for better performance and a modification I will make later-on as it will effect the warranty otherwise . Fourth, and a very small issue, the screw for the vent on the hydraulic tank is not captured to keep it from falling off during operation, I've nearly lost it in the sawdust 2-3 times in the first 2 1/2 hours of use,,,remove it completely and stick it in your pocket or it will definitely get lost in short order or sometimes it vibrates closed. Myself, I'll be replacing mine with with a much better captured vent fitting ! Now on the positive side,,, There's lots and lots of power for a compact unit with it only struggling some on a couple bigger real knotty pieces. Runs and starts great. Overall quality looks really good other than my ram bracket appearing to be out of spec and to wide to stay on the rails. Very easy to store and maneuver around but it will be much better when I put a tow hitch on it for my garden tractor to pull it down to the South 40. I contacted customer service about the issue with the ram bracket and No Problem getting a new bracket and as a matter of fact I found Mike @ customer service outstanding to work with and quite helpful so unless there's some snafu getting the part I'm quite happy with the customer service from Champion. So that's the good and the bad, now I've got about 5- 6 hours of total use on this machine. Honestly other than the small annoying issues I mentioned it's a pretty darn good unit over-all IMHO. We'll see if the new ram bracket takes care of the only major problem I have with this product. 9/24/2019 Review Update,,, After contacting Champion and speaking with Mike all my issues were addressed and the replacement for the out of spec part is in route and will arrive in 3-4 days. I noticed the cylinder did in fact have a bend or got bent the third time the push bracket came off the rails . So either the bracket or cylinder was the issue to start with, either way Champion is sending both to get me back up and running in a timely fashion. As a master level mechanic in the marine and automotive field for >45 years I found Champions warrentee department and staff OUTSTANDING to work with !!! I only wish as many companies I've worked with over the years did as good a job handling my warrentee issues as Champion has. Top Notch Service ! Owning 2 pieces of Champion power equipment, a generator I've had for a couple years with 0 issues and the great service I've received on my splitter issue,,,I'm now a Champion "fan Boy" and can't say enough good things about them. From my experiences I can definitely recommend there products and this is where I'll turn for future power equipment purchases ! IMHO you can buy with confidence from Champion and I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. Once I get this splitter issue resolved I expect just as good things from it as well, just like my generator. ... show more

  • Compact but powerful
Size: 7-Ton
Based on the reviews, I decided to take a chance and buy the Champion 7 ton wood splitter. The delivery was a little delayed but it was delivered for free. This is my first owned wood splitter. I have used others in the past and in comparison this is a compact splitter. It came boxed up in several parts as you can see by the photo. The instructions are not precise but all bolts were in their own packaging and only fit in predrilled holes. I managed to assemble the splitter with myself and my helper Laci (shown in picture). :) in about 1.5 hours. Added gas, oil and hydraulic fluid. Slid the choke over and gave it 2 pulls and it fired right up. I started with maybe a 12" round log and I got no where :( . So I looked and read more and rechecked the hydraulic fluid and it was not registering on the dip stick. I added more fluid. It held almost 2 gallons of hydraulic fluid. On my second attempt the very first pull it fired right up. I went from 6 inch oak to about 18 inch in diameter and it sliced right through them all. I even put some knotted pieces on there and it busted right through. The only drawbacks I have would be no towing capability and like one other reviewer noted, the ram doesn't go far enough to split all the way through the piece of wood. That's another reason to read the reviews. I learned from his review to stick a small 2x4 block behind the wood so it would split all the way through. These are not big issues for me. I am not splitting enough wood that I need to tow it to the site. It is rather compact so it probably wouldn't tow that well behind a truck. But on the other hand it can easily be put in the back of a truck or trailer. I started and stopped it several times and it started on the first pull every time. The next thing I know I looked around and wow, I had a good stack of wood in about 30 minutes. Over all, I am satisfied with the Champion 7 ton wood splitter. If you are just splitting a few cords this is the machine to get it done. 2 years later , still loving the champion. Working great . No issues with it. I have slit some 16 in. Logs I know weighing over 80 pounds because I weighed them. It has my recommendation ... show more

  • Great small splitter
Size: 7-Ton
Bought it about a month and a half ago. Since then, split about 2 cords of wood (walnut, oak). Split the smaller stuff super easy and smooth. I had some big walnut pieces, about 24 inches around and bigger to split. It was hard to do on some splits but took off the sides first and worked right through it. I am impressed by this unit. My dad had a 37 ton unit and it was fantastic but overkill for a hobbyist. If you are on the fence about buying this, don't be. It is well worth the 600 dollars. Only negative I see is that it is hard on your back bending over since the unit is small and close to the ground. But you don't have to lift the logs as far, so that is great. I would say if you split under 5 cords a year, this would be a great investment. We used to do it by hand and that was a workout. Unit is heavy but can be pulled by hand with little effort. I pull it out to where I need it, then bring it back to the garage, so pretty handy. ... show more

  • Very easy to assemble and use.
Size: 7-Ton
The splitter is very easy to operate and takes up very little space in the garage. After assembly filled with oil, hydraulic fluid and gas. Started on the first pull. I gave it four stars instead of five because it has no way of towing it behind my mower, I had to make a bracket for that, very easy. Also it didn't arrive when the shipping co. said it would. They said between 2:00-6:00 and would need a person to sign for it. I took off work early to be there and my wife said that it was already delivered while she was gone and left in the drive way when no one was home. The box was very damaged and I was worried that parts would be missing or damaged. But everything was there and no damage. Split a half cord with it and it had no problem with any of it. ... show more

  • Plenty of power in a small package
Size: 7-Ton
Overall I'm very satisfied with this log splitter. I've managed to split about a cord of freshly cut red and white oak without any issues. Despite an 80cc engine and only a 7 ton rating, this log splitter packs plenty of power to split 20+ inch rounds on the first pass of the ram. It can easily be moved around and taken to the logs in case you have some that are too heavy to move to the splitter. Also, being low to the ground makes it easy to roll big logs onto the cradle without having to lift them per se. Having an upside-down bucket to sit on while you work will minimize the need to constantly be bent over. There are a few minor issues but none of these are real deal breakers. The hydraulic tank is actually the hollow portion of the log splitter beam and it is small compared to other log splitters. If filled according to the instructions, the splitter must be perfectly level or tilted slightly backwards towards the engine so the hydraulic pump does not draw air into the piston. To minimize the impact of this problem, I overfilled the hydraulic tank and rather than using the brass vent during operation, I simply loosen the cap on the fill port of the tank. When I first started using this splitter, the engine always started on the first pull requiring the choke only for ignition. After about 20 hours of use over 10 separate occasions, it usually takes 3 to 4 pulls to start and I now have to keep the the engine half choked for approximately 5 minutes before I can move it to the Run position. The splitter is actually quite heavy and not the sort of thing you want to build on a work table because in the end you'll have to lift it to put it on the ground. However, being so low to the ground makes it a little bit tedious but not impossible for a single person to assemble. Finally, it would be nice if Champion offered accessories for this splitter. For example side mounting ramps would be useful for rolling bigger logs on to the splitter. An attachment to the front "foot" for hooking up to a lawn tractor would also be helpful for moving the splitter around. ... show more

  • I was surprised to find this splitter was a good little work horse and was able to cut through ...
Size: 7-Ton
Already I have split nearly four cords of large diameter red pine (Douglas Fur) which I did not expect this smaller 7 ton could handle. The trees I cut down were at least 3 feet diameter at the base. These trees had only died the year before and were still a bit green (needing more cure) when I split them. I was surprised to find this splitter was a good little work horse and was able to cut through some knots I didn't expect it to handle. I am very impressed especially for the price and it works well for me. However, if I were needing this splitter for commercial purposes, I would most likely go to a larger tonnage splitter. The only reason I am giving this a four star rating is because when it arrived the gas tank was smashed in at the top about a half inch from improper stacking at the warehouse. It is not that the crate and packaging was not done well because it was, but it was because I most likely go the one on the bottom of a high stack. I called Champion and they immediately sent me out another gas tank without question. Their representative was very pleasant to talk to and ordered me another thank without hesitation. So far I have not yet receive the replacement tank but the splitter works fine and replacing the gas tank is only cosmetic. Another point... When assembling this splitter plan on spending some time at it and it might be well to have your wife hold some parts in place while you put on some bolts and nuts in an awkward position as the parts are heavy. You will need to go buy a little over a gallon of hydraulic fluid. I bought two gallons and have plenty of spare to top off the fluid reservoir as needed. Follow their instructions and in the manual and you should have no problem. Also, I actually like this splitter being lower to the ground than most splitter because I do not have to lift the heavy blocks off the ground so far to set them on the splitter. I am very pleased. ... show more

  • Does the job
Size: 7-Ton
Ok.., packaged delivered on time and placed in my garage. Box was undamaged. Went together in about 90 minutes: The engine mounting can be a bit of a bear, bolts go in from under the mounting base and into the engine base and can be difficult lining up. One of the factory installed hydraulic hoses (oil return) was canted slightly upward and made it impossible to to attach the other end (due to stiffness of the hose and not bending enough) and had to muscle the upper mounting connection slightly downward. The lower (oil inlet) factory installed hydraulic hose was very very loose, not a big issue but you need to check them. Takes more fluid than is in the manual. The ram bracket seems to catch at the start of the return, like it is out of spec slightly. Engines starts easily and I split a rick of hardwood with no issues, had no leaks or seeps. Very easy to pull even in gravel, I will reach out Champion about the ram bracket issues. UPDATE: Contacted Champion about the ram issue and they responded quickly. They asked if I could provide a short video of the problem, which I did 1-18-21.....silence since then...couple emails asking for a follow up...nothing. ... show more

Size: 37-Ton
We had a large non-fruit bearing dark cherry tree taken down. The tree people said the wood was too hard to split. In a way they were correct. A splitting ax had almost zero effect. After 20 minutes with a sledgehammer and a wedge, I was able to split one 16" log. That certainly would not do for the whole tree. The 37-ton Champion log splitter handled splitting the wood like it was nothing. It did great. Very easy to use, although I would recommend ear protection. Really glad to have it as there are two more trees, we removed that are aging and waiting for the log splitter next year. Highly recommend it. ... show more

Size: 7-Ton
More than met my expectations so far. Seems quality built. We’ll see how it holds up. I wanted a small gas powered wood splitter that didn’t take up a lot of room. I had a small electric 5 ton splitter that would only split small logs. This has more than handled any logs I’ve had so far. 20 plus inch diameter and over 50 lbs. This may not be the splitter for you if you need to split really big or hard logs or transport it from location to location. Easy to transport by hand around your home. Starts easily, just a few pulls. Great little splitter if you don’t want the size or expense of a 20 ton splitter ... show more

  • Works great! Love it! But... customer service?
Size: 7-Ton
Used it several times so far. Love it. Works great! Like a hot knife through butter!! My son (with my wife watching) both say it’s amazing. Only note of concern; how much hydraulic fluid it needs or uses. Forget about the users guide. It gobbles up much more than it says it needs. Not seemingly leaking except some out of a bleed valve that the manual says needs to stay open during operation. But have already needed to add a little more here and there now totaling about a gallon and a half. It needed about 1.3 gals just to fill it and use it and for it to smooth itself out the first time. Since then we’ve added about another .3 of a gallon. Not sure if this is normal or not. Called their main customer service line, and after 30 minutes of waiting to speak to tech support, I had to leave them a message which I did. But a week later, they still haven’t called back. It doesn’t leak in our garage either so no idea on this. Would be nice to hear from them! Add on to above... they didn’t call me back from my message above. So I called customer service again. This time success. They answered my questions very good. Great help! Fully explained it. They said it’s confusing. They need to update their manual. Seem to use a bigger piston now. Customer service said it actually uses about or just over a gallon and a half of hydraulic fluid once all the air pockets are out of the lines and all that. Like 1.54 of gallons. So buy extra. Plus leave the little bleeder valve open during operation a little to allow for oil to release a little if it needs to. Some seepage out is normal. Check fluid levels each use. Just an FYI. Great product so far!! ... show more
