This means that a pillow that is high enough to support my neck-shoulder area when side-sleeping, was too high for my neck if I rolled onto my back, and I'd wake with significant pain! I've tried many, many pillows and nothing helped me. Some were soft, but so soft my head would sink and block my breathing and offered no support for my neck when I was on my side. I was looking for something to fight my neck pain, and also shoulders pain, what I believe initially was caused from neck. The pillow works really good - I use it to sleep overnight. But there are downsides as well, if you have a soft matrass, it may bend over and push your ears by its sides - that is something what I experienced with a very soft matrass toper, I tried to use for a couple of day to prevent another issue I have.
