Many reviewers are complaining that this tarp is not waterproof, but it is NOT advertised as waterproof. The description says water-resistant. These two terms are NOT the same. I was hoping it would be waterproof, but it's not. After an initial test, I thought it was waterproof. I made a depression and it held water for quite a while until I emptied it. After I went to quite a bit of trouble to situate the canvas horizontally where I wanted it, and tested it by spraying with a hose attachment, MOST water ran off the tarp, but some soaked through here and there. I've ordered some waterproofing spray for canvas. This is a good canvas tarp, very well made. Expensive, but worth it, IMO. ... show more

Do not buy this product. I purchased 2 large tarps over $500 expecting a heavy duty, waterproof, and durable tarp. I covered a boat trailer stored outdoors (not the boat) for 7 months.. The tarp is coming apart and is basically worthless. I will have to throw in the dumpster since it is disintegrating. The only thing I can see is accurate in the description is it is heavy. I complained to the company Chicago Canvas about my experience hoping to get at least a partial refund and got little help. Basically an offer to buy another of their tarps at 15% discount. Apparently their if not warranty on this product as you might expect for a heavy duty durable tarp as advertised. I would recommend to not purchase this tarp and personally I will never buy another product from Chicago Canvas since they don’t seem to advertise accurately, warrant products they sell, or try to resolve product disputes with obvious issues. You would think if a customer buys a product and it falls apart in less than 7 months the company would be very concerned about quality issues related and help the customer resolve an obvious issue. This tarp has a smell that I am sure is the waterproofing, so its going outside, not a big deal. Its a pretty strong smell, but our problem was the size. I ordered a 10 x 20 before I read that the size is BEFORE they hem and put the grommets on. That made the tarp almost a foot too small each way! Make sure that you read and order the right size. With that said, it is SUPER DUPER NICE. Well done, great fabric, nice and heavy, the nicest I have seen. We returned and re-ordered a larger size, and highly recommend the product. ... show more

Before this Cotton canvas 24 x 12 ft, I bought two more smaller, and they are waterproof. the others in their corners are very well done, stronger and reinforced. This is not. It is still sturdy, but the quality is lesser than the two previously bought. I think in order to keep quality at the top, Chicago Canvas distributor should seek with the manufacturer not to reduce the quality of this bigger canvas. I will have to buy a product to make it waterproof. It is covering my boat to avoid get wet when raining, and in Florida it rains many days during the year. ... show more

    • Great Tarp for the right application, don’t use for a deck shade though.

I got this to stretch over a pergola on my deck. It’s a nicely made tarp and the color was really nice (Gold). However, it’s absolutely the wrong kind of tarp for that application and I had to return it (The seller will tell you the same thing). For one thing, the canvas can’t take the tension required to keep it from flapping in the wind (too much stress on the fabric around the grommets and it will rip). Also, I can’t state strongly enough how intense and unpleasant the smell from the waterproofing treatment is. Even after 2 weeks of being outside in the sun, rain and open air it was still amazingly strong. I’m sure after a season it would fade, and I tried to get used to it, but it’s a really powerful smell like creosote or linseed oil. Enough to ruin enjoyment of morning coffee and breakfast on the deck after 2 weeks. I’m giving it 5 stars because it would be a great tarp for the right application (covering a camper or the like) far out of smell range. ... show more

This is a heavy tarp, with well-seated grommets. However, I ordered a 10x16 foot tarp, and the long side measures at 14 feet 9 inches. Additionally, there is a strong hydro-carbon, diesel smell on the tarp. I have been airing it out and letting it get rained on to try to reduce the smell.
