I used to have a small bucket to use as a countertop compost bin. but we adopted a new cat and he likes to go compost bin diving. so had to find something that had a lid and didn't have any bells/whistles and didn't take too much space. This one is very simple. works well, and when closed the cat doesn't express any interest, so it serves the purpose as intended. If he starts prying the lid open, i'll probably have to devise some sort of "lock" (velcro strap, etc). but so far so good, as clearly the cat isn't clever/curious enough to attempt opening the lid yet. plastic is suitably solid and not flimsy. lid doesn't lock but seems to seal well enough. I use with a 2-gal compostable lining. the lid and the top frame (holds the lining in place) does get dirty, but it's easy to just hand wash it. very pleased. ... show more

The Brabantia bin (1.6 gal) is the perfect solution to collecting food scraps for composting. My biodegradable bags (bought on Amazon) fit and the design is very sleek. The lid closes easily (no noise and seems to be air tight). It does not have a charcoal filter as some other bins do, but not sure that matters. Adding baking soda to smelly scraps kills the fungi that are needed to break down organic matter so that's a no-no, but since the bin contains odors completely, that's a non-issue.     • 12L/3.2Gal Can + Simple Human liners as a litter bucket

This was one of the few litter pail options I could find that is short enough to fit inside our litter box cabinet (it looks like a long end table but has a cat hole in one side). Due to the comments here about how expensive and difficult the liners are to buy I also purchased a set of the C 10-12L Simple Human trash can liners to go with the 12L can. The liners are a tad small for the bin but can be used - a little dexterity is required so I wouldn't recommend using the Simple Human liners with this if you have serious arthritis or if you want kids to empty the pail. I'm using crystal litter which dries out the turds and does not clump. I'm confident the liner will hold up for that. If you're planning to fill this with heavier content such as composting or clumping litter I'm not sure if the Simple Human liner will hold up or end up slipping in. I'll update this after a couple months as I see how it holds up to the contents and how the smell is. ... show more
