  • I LOVE this kit.
Style: Original Edition
Ok…. First off I was concerned that the seeds were no good because they’re past date. But I figured I’d give it a go, if nothing else I would get a nice wooden box from it. I did 3 seeds for each tree and almost all of them sprouted! Only one black spruce and one Brazilian rosewood. The blue spruce and flame tree had a 100% success rate for me… and I still have more seeds to sprout! The little sacks are great, they have a drainage hole and are perfect size for little saplings. The disk potting media is also great! I had some left over afterwards. Which I really appreciate because I’m clumsy and the extra would have carried me. The instructions are perfect. They are on the back of the seed packet AND you get a little booklet with the instruction information. Again great if you’re prone to misplacing things. The wood box is amazing too. Currently my saplings are growing in there. Once they grow out I will use this box for seed storage. Im so happy I bought this kit. I will be buying it as a gift for my sister this Xmas! I highly recommend this kit. Only “downside” is that the flame tree grows QUICK… they seem to go from just sprouting to 4” over night. I had to separate them. Which unfortunately did kill one of them. I would also recommend getting wire to start training when you buy this kit. They grow fast and they harden quick as well. Again highly recommend this kit. ... show more

  • Great product, follow the instructions and don’t slack!
Style: Colorbox Edition
Followed the directions: soaked the seeds over night and planted only 3 per container to eliminate overcrowding. I water with spray bottle daily. I keep the Brazilian rosewood outdoors as specified. They sprouted within 1-2 weeks and now are about 1-2 inches tall (with exception to the Brazilian rosewood which has a much longer germination time) and has been growing slowly. I can’t wait to continue watching them grow. The pictures included are taken on June 19 (less than a month after planted on 5/22) ... show more

  • Only blue spruce sprouted
Style: Colorbox Edition
The media could not be loaded. Did not like that out of all the seeds, the only ones that poked through were the blue spruce seeds. The black spruce seeds only one sprouted but quickly shriveled up and died but hey it was a sprout nevertheless. Just not the results I was hoping for with the price of the combo pack. Maybe it was me, maybe it wasn't. Hard to tell when I follow directions to a T. I would actually try n buy them again just to see if it's me or them. ... show more

  • Worth Every Penny
Style: Original Edition
Cutest little box! All of my seeds sprouted with no issues and still continue to sprout almost a year after my purchase (even though I didn’t listen and put extra seeds in the fridge 🤫)! The Flame Tree (D. Regia) was my most successful. All others died on my own fault (not enough light or ventilation, over watering, etc., newbie here what can I say). The flame tree survived and thrived after first pruning too! I pruned very early because I originally didn’t have the space to have it in a well lit area, and it was struggling to grow so this helped A LOT, especially since I was trying to keep the tree small anyway. Sadly, when trying to repot it and add soil, I got a little heavy handed with the fragile stem and it broke. I do have the add that by this point, the stem was starting to show signs of actual tree texture and was starting to stiffen a lot! I was super excited. :( Again, user error. So I pulled my leftover bristlecone pine and brazilian rosewood seeds of out my box, that have just been sitting since last Christmas, just to give it a shot and they’re all sprouting again!! I just transplanted one into a larger pot and and 3 others in a growing pot still. Be careful with watering if you use the burlap sacks included in the kit. The plastic lining seems to speed up white mold growth, and I’ve have more success just using any cheap plastic container, or ripping the plastic lining out (you will need to the plastic tray that’s included to collect any excess water). Soil discs were perfect and all of the instructions were easy to follow, with the help of all of the resources on their company website. This is my first bonsai experience and I’m glad that I chose this kit to start with! I’ve learned a lot so far and can’t wait to start some brand new trees ❣️ ... show more

  • Cuteness makes it impractical
Style: Original Edition
I don’t necessarily dislike this set - but it’s essentially turning into a purchase of four bags of seeds and a set of mini shears. You can probably throw the rest out. The cute little burlap like bags? Not practical. They tell you to plant a few seeds in each bag. My seeds seemed to work well. All of the Rosewoods germinated as well as the Blue Spruce. I see some Black Spruce coming up in their bag. No flame trees yet, but I’m giving them more time and then I’ll try again. But if you follow the directions you will end up with several little seedlings in each “pot”. They will start crowding each other out and roots tangling, so you want to deal with it before then. Depending on the resource you look at there are two paths. One of the Garden Republic pages says just grow one of them and chop off the smaller trees. I actually wanted multiple trees though, that’s why I bought this set. So I had to transplant them, and they weren’t old enough for that level of stress. I did that tonight. Hope they survive. The dirt that comes with it seems ok. It’s a dehydrated seed starter mix. Can’t really say if it’s any better or worse than the others. If I had to start this all over I would throw out everything but the seeds and the shears. Maybe keep the wooden box as it’s cute and handy. Then I would buy some seed starting soil and something like the Burpee Superseed 16XL. I’d fill the Burpee cells with a good seed starting mix, then plant four of each seed in rows. Then they wouldn’t have to be transplanted as soon and they would be a lot easier to get out of the Burpee than those silly bags. ... show more
