  • Does a good job.
Just got the wood splitter this morning and set about splitting the wood from a tree I had cut down. It did a really good and quick job. Here is some information and pointers: It is very well built and it is HEAVY. it weighs almost 100 pounds. Fortunately it does have wheels on one end. When splitting the wood, you might think nothing is happening when you are pumping the handle and then all of a sudden the wood will give a loud crack and split! Just keep pumping. The instructions state that the minimum length to split is 14". You can split shorter lengths by putting a block of wood between the ram and the wood. Be careful that you don't stand next to the wood. I had a couple of pieces literally split apart and fly off. It doesn't feel good! Overall, this splitter well built and a good value. ... show more

  • It's good for a hand splitter.
I think the handles should be about 6" longer or adjustable to accommodate tall people or those with low back problems. The instructions are good BUT doesn't say when the oil should be filled.

  • Excellent Value!
This 12-ton manual hydraulic splitter is well-made and heavy-duty, much like a 10-ton red splitter that I have used for over 10 years. This 12-ton is much better made and heavier duty than the 10-ton splitters that you can buy today, including the red one. They don't make 'em like they used to! With its close to 100 lbs weight, and I'm barely 110, it's not so easy for me to maneuver. With its tiny wheels, it's not as stable as it would be with larger, wider-set wheels. However, set it up on a solid, level surface, and it does the work while I get exercise and fresh air. It's a Win Win! ... show more

  • The seller's shipping date you should not believe.
The 12 splitter works pretty well. I was able to split the future firewood as expected. I liked it enough to get a second one for another house with a fireplace. The shipping for both has been a problem in that the splitters arrived later than I was told to expect and the tracking information was non-existent. It shipped but never seemed to move until it was delivered. This may not be the fault of the seller but it was really annoying to me. ... show more

  • Better than expected but one drawback
I did find this so much better than trying to split with an axe by a long shot. I have a bad back and shoulder, so needed a way to split a bunch of Hackberry my son brought me. I was really surprised at how well it went thru even larger logs (see picture). This wood is about a year cut, so decently seasoned, not green, not completely dry. Some of the pieces needed some extra work to separate, but the splitter popped thru them with reasonable ease. Now on to one negative I noticed. The return valve tends to not stay closed, so you may need to reclose it now and then while splitting. Was not a big issue for me at all, but for me, I could not spend a couple thousand on a big powered splitter, and the electric ones are usually like 6-8 ton and that's not always going to get you thru a log. Some of the pieces I split today (first day out of the box) were pretty hard, so used the creep stick deeper into the log, but once it popped, I could use the rapid with no problem. Now the sticks are a bit loose, so I took one out and just used one and moved it from side to side as needed. Is it effortless? No Is it less work than an axe? Quite so Can a handicapped person do this? Pretty sure many can. Is it dangerous? Could be, but no fast moving parts, and may whack your head or hands with the floppy rods. Is it worth the price? Absolutely in my opinion, this is well worth the money. I will be adding larger wheels on it to drag it around on grass and leaf cover, but may just build myself a cart to raise it up more and be more stable since I can't bend too good ... show more

  • Barely works for me
Main dislike: the 2" wheels. IF you're moving on a glass smooth surface, they might work. In my real world (actual dirt, wood chips, pine needles) they just make dragging this beast harder. IF (big if) this worked well on the wood I need split, it would be worth adding 6" wheels. I guess (but have not had a chance to try) if you're working with dry, knot-free, hardwood, it might work well. It's strongly built, and the hydraulic action is smooth and powerful. I'll get a chance to test it on fresh Eucalyptus -- the only time that ribbon-grained wood can be split -- and let you know. ... show more

  • Not shipped via Amazon but with UPS
The product is only as good as it's physical presence. UPS seems to undergoing a Union dispute and the carriers have been making deliveries problematic. Good luck with your shipment. Surprisingly, the shipping was fast and UPS made the delivery without their usual excuses, detours and delays. Perhaps complaining sometimes has a positive effect. The Bilt Hard Splitter itself is a joy to use. In the past, I've been using a sledgehammer and wedges. This is a improvement in my wood processing method. Just hope the hydraulic seals hold up over time. There doesn't appear to be a rebuild kit available for the jack. ... show more

  • Works
Not the best but works. I wish I could fit slightly longer wood, and I wish the handles went the opposite way as pulling is easier than pushing.
