  • Took our first trip with the bike case and it went great
Style: Bike Box Ii
We're expanding our biking experiences by taking our own bikes on tours, so a bike case is a must. This hard case was the most economical at the time of purchase, so we took the plunge. There are a number of reviews that expressed reservations about how the shells interlocked, but once you open and close it a couple of times, it's very easy to manage. I also read comments about TSA not being able to put the case back together properly, so I labeled with paint pen how each section of the case overlapped with the other half. For our trip to Vermont, the cases were treated as regular luggage and never opened. Other than the bulk, they were fairly easy to manage. If I have any critiques, it would be the lack of a second handle on the back of the case, and the overall weight. There is a front handle for pulling, and one on the side right next to the front (which doesn't seem necessary). It's difficult to pick the case up without a second handle on the back side. There's really no way to make the case lighter, so you can't put much more than the bike in without going over 50 pounds. We have carbon fiber bikes, and even then we couldn't put anything other than our helmets and some minor lightweight items in with the bike. Lesson learned as we had to open them in the airport and remove shoes and clothing to make the weight. Overall, very happy with the case and looking forward to our next trip. ... show more

  • Great Case for the Money
Style: Bike Box Ii
As the other reviewers state the case is too complex for TSA to ever put it back correctly, but they always put it back good enough to get by. It’s a solid case, the casters don’t turn as well as they should but for the price point it’s perfect.

  • Very sturdy and stylish box which is easy to wheel around
Style: Bike Box Ii
The case looks very nice and seems quite sturdy. I took my bike on a flight from the US to China and had no issues. My racing bike fit easily into the case and was very well protected. Previously, I had used cardboard bike boxes to transport my bike, but it was always almost impossible to manage the box plus any luggage. For this trip, I was able to easily roll my bag with one hand and pull the bike case with the other which was really nice. I had no issues whatsoever with getting around with my case. After the trip, the case shows no signs of wear. There are no scratches on it and it seems just as sturdy. The only issue I had is that TSA (since they only hire the best of the best) were unable to figure out how to put the box back together after they inspected it. While the over/under lapping style of the case makes it very sturdy, it can be hard to get together just right. Additionally, the large luggage strap is VERY sturdy, but the mechanism takes more than a second to figure out. Needless to say, the slightly complicated mechanism was a little too much for TSA, and when I got my box back, it was sadly held together with duct tape :(. Still, that was not a problem of B&W's bike box, but rather TSA. Even with the duct tape holding it together, my bike arrived safe and sound at its destination and TSA did no permanent damage to the box. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and I look forward to taking my bike on more trips in the future. ... show more

  • Hard to close
Style: Bike Box Ii
The first few times I tried to fasten the top to the bottom, it took two of us to assemble and fasten. The interlocking design is very difficult. Airport security TSA took it apart and did not reassemble correctly, however the bike stayed intact. I found that the more often I used it, the easier it was to assemble, I think it conforms to the shape of the bike. ... show more

  • Lightweight Protection
Style: Foldon Case
Great case for the Brompton. Bike, helmet and lock all inside and it still weighed in under 50 lbs at check in. Great protection on the round trip from SFO to LHR. I previously used a soft bag for the Bike and it was consistently getting damaged.

  • Clever design, but way too clever for the TSA! Disappointing result...
Style: Bike Box Ii
When the bike box arrived I though it was an interesting & innovative design. But I could see how it could be potentially confusing for the uninitiated to close correctly. In fact, the box came with a manufacturer's warning that it might be a good idea to ask for an inspection by security people at the check-in counter. Having followed the instructions to the letter, on packing my Cannondale road bike (58cm frame Synapse, by the way, which fit well), and packed various cycle clothes & accessories, I DID manage to close the box correctly, and even wrote (in silver Sharpie) a few guidelines on how the box overlaps in order to correctly close it. When I checked in for my flight I discovered that, even though I was in First Class, there was an additional "out-of-size" charge of $150 (my first little surprise). I asked for a TSA agent to come for a visual inspection (as advised by the company). The TSA agent was actually a keen cyclist, and inspected the bike, accessories etc. Then I closed the box (correctly) and gave it to him to take away. Upon arrival at London's Heathrow, the box appeared (not on the outsize carousel) effectively almost in pieces. At some stage during the journey some security person had decided to re-inspect the contents, and had utterly failed to put it back together again correctly. The result was that the two halves were almost falling apart.... There were several large gaps in the container, so I immediately inspected the contents. Luckily the bike was OK, and because I had actually tied the accessories to the frame (in plastic bags) nothing was actually lost from the case. It did, however take a bit of juggling to put the box back together correctly, as it had obviously spent a number of hours INCORRECTLY assembled, and parts of the box had bent! I know this is not the fault of the manufacturer, but sadly this box is way too complicated for the average security employee to re-assemble. It's all very well having a clever design, but it also needs to be intuitive. In the end I chose NOT to return to the USA with either the box OR the bike, as my return journey from the UK (on this occasion) was via Italy, and then back to the States from there. I was so concerned about possibly incorrect assembly and subsequent damage/loss to both the case and the bike. I may choose to return home with my box & bike on a later occasion. I short, I am quite disappointed in this case, especially the considerable financial outlay involved, and the final result. I probably would've been better off (especially with the additional baggage cost) simply sending my bike ahead, using one of the FedEx or UPS services on line, and using a cardboard container. ... show more
