  • Excellent shredder
Style: 8-Sheet StripCut/ CD
Replaced 10 year old shredder with this one based on reviews. This shredder works very well for home use. Quiter than my old one.

  • It cures paranoia
Style: 8-Sheet StripCut/ CD
I went on a cleaning binge and emptied drawers full of old financial statements, tax returns, all kinds of stuff. I am not that paranoid and usually just throw the odd form out in the garbage. Two or three yard waste bags full of my info was a different story, though, so I set out to find a shredder. The Aurora seemed well-received and while it clearly is too small to be used in the Pentagon, I hoped it would last through one big job and then serve for the modest use it would get thereafter. And, it did survive! This is amazing because this machine is pretty marginal power-wise. Even two sheets of paper slows it down. It gets hot and smells like impending doom. If you stubbornly keep going, it stops and you have to wait for it to cool down, praying that it will start up again. I blew the thermal overload a couple of times, had to fish out stuck stuff and generally used it harder than it was designed for, but it always came back to life. Good job! It worked on an unsolicited credit card, but I didn't try a cd. The drawbacks are that you have to feed the paper into the slot carefully and evenly. Otherwise, it pulls it in crookedly and sometimes jambs. It is not that easy to clean out stuck paper. I folded some thin cardboard to make sort of a scoop, but the temptation is to use some metal device, like knives in the toaster. The reverse function helps, but not in all cases. Note that shredded paper achieves a volume one million times greater than the original sheets. The basket fills up in a hurry. This is a home unit, suitable for the monthly shredding most of us are faced with. I suggest not letting it pile up to long because this unit requires patient feeding, only one paper at a time, and it will take you a long time to finish the job. If you don't abuse it, I'll bet the Aurora will last for a very long time and will prove to be a great investment. When you see depictions of criminals searching through your curbside trash, you will only laugh because you shredded your secret documents and any sense of paranoia will be fleeting at most. ... show more

  • Great for home use for the price
Style: 8-Sheet StripCut/ CD
I purchased this shredder in 2010 and continue to use it in 2014. The shredder still functions well, despite that I have occasionally pushed it a tad beyond its limits (there was one occasion in which I tried to jam too much paper into it at once and the motor overheated; however, when I allowed it to rest a while it continued to function as usual). It can handily shred into strips up to 8 or so pages at a time, or a few envelopes of junk mail, but as has been pointed out by others, if you are looking for more security with your shreds, you probably want to find a shredder that does more than long strips. The same is true with credit card shreds. It shreds them easily, but only does so in strips, so if you are worried that someone might obtain those strips and reconstruct the card somehow, you will need to either shred the strips again, or burn the card somewhat before you shred. The container itself is small, about the size of a small office garbage can. However, the actual shredding mechanism simply sits atop the garbage pail portion, so it is easily emptied. In the alternative, you could shred directly into a larger pail or garbage bag. Ultimately, if you are looking for an office shredder, this is probably not for you. If you are looking for a simple shredder for home use and to shred the junk mail, credit card solicitations, or other materials that may contain personal information, this shredder does a fine job for a very low price. ... show more

  • Small but mighty
Style: 8-Sheet StripCut/ CD
I purchased this specific shredder for it's small storable size and I'm very happy with it. It shredds paper easily and is easy to clean as well. I don't have a lot of storage in my apartment so I needed something that delivered on power but was small enough to fit in a small closet. I scoured Amazon for something that fit my parameters and I'm so glad I found this one! Highly recommend if you are looking for a shredder that is small and efficient. ... show more

  • An Excellent Value
Style: 8-Sheet StripCut/ CD
I'm very happy with this inexpensive but well-made shredder. I chose a strip-cut shredder to shred phone books, junk mail, and magazines for starting fires in my fireplace. It's faster than I expected. It can shred groups of phone book pages as quickly as I can tear them out. I used it heavily over the winter to shred the equivalent of about a 2-foot-high stack of paper. It's still running perfectly. The motor has thermal protection: if it overheats, it stops running until it cools down. Being run continuously, it can fill its basket twice before overheating and stopping. I have a few minor criticisms: It often doesn't fully eject the paper, so you have to pull the last strips out by hand before emptying the basket. There's a single sensor in the middle of the slot, so when shredding narrow items, sometimes it stops and you have to press the manual run button. It would be nicer if the basket were clear so you could see how full it is. The slot is only 8.75 inches wide, so some larger mailings have to be folded to be shred. I wish it were just an inch wider. ... show more
