    • A Nice Small Project Welder That Will Save You Money if You Have a Few Small Projects.

Okay, I’m not a welder, just so you know that I cannot give a comparison to other welding devices. I had a real welder show me a few things and I built a utility trailer 50 years ago and I haven’t touched a welder since then. I needed to do some repairs to a different utility trailer so I broke out the ARCCAPTAIN Mini Stick Welder. My experience was pretty good. I was able to weld a new hitch to the trailer and after a few minutes practice, I think I did a pretty good job. The biggest problem I had was finding a circuit in the garage that didn’t have other things on it. I popped the circuit breaker twice while welding the hitch. Since my breaker box is in the garage, I will be installing a 30 Amp breaker and outlet for the next project. I was able to finish, but it required short sessions, about half a stick at a time. Longer welds would trip the 20-amp breaker. I am impressed at how well it actually worked, especially considering its size and price. You will need welding gloves, a welder’s helmet and some rods. I used 1/8th inch rods and I feel that any larger ones would be problematic. For someone just wanting to do small repair jobs, I think this is just what you need. Get some gloves, a helmet and maybe a welder’s apron and you are ready to go. One or two small projects and you have saved enough in welder fees to pay for everything. So full disclosure, I'm very much a novice at welding, and am more or less a do-it-yourselfer. For my purposes, this stick welder is pretty perfect. I live in a condo, so I like things to not take up much space, and this thing is perfectly sized for my needs. It really is very small, and lightweight. I found it funny when the box it came in had heavy stickers pasted on all sides, because it's extremely light. It's also super portable, and with seemingly plenty of amperage for my needs. I tried it with 3/32 rods, and had no problems with 3/16th steel. The actual quality of my welds is debatable, but that's another story altogether. The entire system is made of solid materials, and the cord lengths are more than adequate. Like I said, I'm really a novice to this, so for somebody like me this is a great beginner unit. The one thing that I should point out from my research, because I have to research these things a little bit being a beginner, is that I did find an individual who tested other amperage claims on more powerful models of this particular Arc welder, and he found that they were underpowered compared to their claims. This is the 130 amp, and he tested the 200, and 160. What he found was that the 200 is rated closer to 160, and the 160 was closer to 125. I can't verify that this 130 is in fact 130, but for somebody like me, it's plenty powerful. All In all, I personally have no complaints about it, and especially love the portability and size. My brother is not a welder but needed a small welding machine to learn how to weld. This little machine has been great because it's not too complicated and it's portable. So he can carry it with him when he goes to learn and has it to practice his welding while at home. He states that it does exactly what he needs it to do for now and in the future he will upgrade but for now. Very small package. Stinger and ground are ok quality. Not bad not great. Had alot of trouble striking an arc with a 7018 on 130 amps. Did lay a couple decent beads but it was a fight. Maybe better with a smaller or different rod.

The day I got this compact welder I used it, I welded a bracket on my lawn trailer for tail lights, Not a problem I used 6011 and had no problems attaching the bracket.

About the size of a 1st grader's lunchbox, super light and easy to store, this little welder is great around the house and for hobbyists. It runs 3/32 and 1/8 rod, 6013 or J422, no problem with the output setting as low as 50 amps for an 1/8 inch workpiece. Dialed to 100+ amps it can burn through the sheetmetal, so I expect it will be capable with plate. The stinger has a strong spring and pronounced grooves to hold the welding rod securely. The earth clamp is copper. Both have 10 ft cables, and the power cord is 6'4". Even the dial has a nice feel. One of the best inexpensive mini stick welders. ... show more
